View Full Version : Colt Sporter II - Partial XM177 Clone

Going to try and keep this short.

Wife's step dad had a Colt Sporter (II I think) with an A1 stock but a XM177 clone upper. I didn't know near as much about ARs then as I do now, so that's all I can remember.
Well he got the hair up his ass to rob a bank with it one day and go on a police chase.

I was bummed, I thought that rifle would never see the light of day again. Either be destroyed, auctioned or end up in an officer's collection. Well I guess the FBI told him he could arrange to have someone come pick it up (with a polite reminder that felons cannot own firearms).
He asked if I wanted to go pick it up.... OF COURSE!

So I'm just waiting on to get the details on how/when I can pick it up.

Image I saved from "the day".

Talk about a conversation piece! Wonder what condition it'll be in.

No kidding. Wife asked "do you really want a gun someone robbed a bank with"? If it was a hipoint or a Raven, probably not. But this, yep! LOL

Not everyone gets to own something with a little "history". Anxious to see your pics when you get it.

<snipped TMI>

Sad story all around, with a silver lining of maybe getting a cool gun.

People buy German and Japanese rifles from WWII all the time. A real pre '86 NFA Transferable German machine gun (FG42) sold at auction recently for $299,000....and I know of another one going up for sale soon. So people pay a pretty penny for guns used by "evil" people or for "evil" purposes....the inanimate object had nothing to do with how it was used.

Most likely not a murder weapon, which is why it's getting a repreive. It all depends on your outlook; in this case, probably no-harm/no-foul = all good!

Would I want a shovel used to hack the head off an american prisoner in Iraq? Hell no! Would I like a knife that's touched the aorta of an insurgent savage? I'll clear a space on my mantle. It's all about how you look at it.

Hope your in-laws get better. I'd want the gun also.

I have an Iraqi helmet I punched a few holes in...with bullets. The Mahdi Army fighter wasn't needing it anymore

I would wait to see what it looks like first... but I would leave it as is. Talk about one hell of a good conversation piece.

It all depends. Do you want the parts and pieces or do you want the thing for the story that goes with it? I think the latter makes it one hell of an interesting firearm myself.

Heck yes. I would break it down, compete inspection, clean, lube and if serviceable, shoot it as is.

The only thing I might do is put a CAR stock on it to get it closer to clone status.

Other than that, clean and shoot it!
And take pics. :)

Haha, thanks. If everything goes right and I do get it, the local VFW has pretty close to same period tank. Already have permission to bring guns for pics. Just haven't had the "right" gun to use.

That gun is going to be a family heirloom [BD]

50 years from now someone is going to be doing their family tree and bam! Look at that.

what kind of a question is that? The obvious answer to that question is "yes. yes I do. any more dumb questions?"

besides, if it's free, you're gonna have to damn near trace that thing back to a concentration camp before I'd pass on it.

If you need help setting that up, let me know. I'll only charge you range time with "The Dillinger" and you'll have to take pics of all my AR's. :)

I won't charge you for that uber cool nickname I just have it off the top of my head. Freebie for my bro. :)
