View Full Version : Left handed upper question

I'm working with a friend to build him a lefty upper.

I've found stripped forged uppers and CMT's billet upper. I've found lefty BCGs. That all seems straightforward.

In some of my research, I hear people saying you need a lefty barrel extension too. Is this still true? Would Ballistic Advantage barrels work as they are? Or do I need to hunt down a barrel company with lefty extensions?

Any advice appreciated as I know some of you have done this.

Thanks.

I don't know what you could do to make an extension for the devil handed, extensions look symmetrical to me. UW or Medic should know.

You don't need them.

You don't need them.

Agreed.

I've never even heard of LH barrel extensions.

Rebuilt this Armalite Rifle for a pal using a Stag LH stripped upper and their LH bolt. Added the Troy FF handguard, etc. The barrel and it's extension are stock Armalite parts. Runs great.

I believe that assigning laterality to a barrel extension is a fairy tail.

fledge, have you seen anyone offer LH Barrel extensions? If so, post it up, I'm just curious what the specs/description lists.

Here's one example, UW. See pics down the thread for the supposed difference. This thread is a decade old but I found more discussions like it.

Stag used to list ambi extension on their site and would install it on their barrels. Its no where to be found anymore but I found a place that still lists it.

Haha I only ran into this issue after I told my friend I could source parts within his budget of better quality than a lefty Stag. I thought I'd have to reconsider that offer. Lefty upper and BCG are already most expensive than their righty counterparts.

Ordered up some parts today and will make budget.

I run Stag bolts in CMT uppers with barrels from multiple manufacturers and have never had an issue .

For the most part, I avoided LH uppers until CMT made them. I have 2 CMT uppers both with Ballistic Advantage barrels. So far they've run without issue. Like I said, I didn't even know LH extensions were a thing.

I wish CMT had a lefty BCG to match.

I've got a CMT upper, rail, gas block, a BA barrel, and a chrome line RedX BCG on the way.

I've had good luck with the Stag BCG's but I agree that CMT needs one.

I have a older Stag lefty rifle with a JP barrel. Pretty sure I have the old Stag barrel somewhere. Need to look at the extension.

I also have CMT uppers with Daniel Defense, Noveske, Rainier and Ballistic Advantage barrels that run flawlessly. I did have an issue with a Stag bolt not headspacing with the DD barrel but another one was well within spec. They swapped it out with no questions asked.

I spoke to Jeff about this awhile back. At that time, no plans for a CMT LH BCG.

I think we discussed that at last years show. Along with .308 lefty's.

Brownell's used to have the ambi chamfered extension on their site, but they were never were in stock. I've also read torque spectacle anywhere between 100 and 150 ft/lbs. still, I doubt you'll ever realign the extension prooerly with the gas port. I'd assume in barrel building, gas ports are last. When I got my Stag 5 years ago they listed/touted the ambi extension. But I've had no problems with regular barrels on my lefty uppers.
