No..no..no, that's when you're taking a piss. Depending on which side of the equator you're on is which way you adjust windage to hit the bowl, and not the floor. Or which way it flows, or something.

After a week-long bender in the 1980s I awoke in a strange motel. When I noticed water spinning counterclockwise down the sink drain I knew I wasn't in Kansas anymore.

Run it at Steve's during semi-annual range trips. Wet with a fresh wipe, it is good for 4 or 5 quiet shots. I have it on the night stand (dry) to kill flash if things go bump in the night. Steve has their Gen-2 (flat front end) and its' efficiency seems to be as good as, or slightly better. Price is very competitive with larger units. Only run it occasionally at the local range, work mostly on square box shooting there - eyes getting old [BD]

It is quite a bit shorter and lighter than the more efficient Ti-Rant.

Wet, the Poseidon runs about the first 7 shots at the sound level of a dry TiRant, IMHO. After that, you hear it get progressively louder. I like mine for what I bought it for, a nightstand indoor defense pistol. Certainly not at the "impress your friends at the range" kind of can. I'm waiting to see how it runs 9mm subs on the Glock, when I get some time on the range. For the record, I've tried water, lithium grease, gun grease and wire pulling gel. Wire pulling gel works the best, both greases worked well, but very smokey.

Some suppressors are designed to be run "wet". That means there is a solid wipe (normally a urethane disk) placed in front of the internal baffles and held in place by the end cap. Then a small amount of some fluid (wire pulling gel recommended by most MFG's) is put in the back of the tube before installing on the firearm. Surprisingly, passing through the gel and the wipe does not appear to affect accuracy. The gel helps cool and slow the "fireball" hence aiding in suppressing the sound of the shot. As more shots are fired, the gel is burned off and the shots get slightly louder. Once the "wet" is gone, the suppressor is at its' least efficient level. There may be rifle suppressors designed to be run wet, but I am not aware of any.

A lot of rifle cans can have water (or some fluid) added into the tube and then run. I know SF specifically mentions it in their manuals and I believe the KAC NT4 has something about it (I don't own one to confirm). Obviously you don't fill the can up, it's just a little of the fluid poured in.

I believe some “military” spec’d Cans are able to run with some fluid in them based on operational requirements but I wouldn’t go squirting wire pulling gel in my centerfire rifle suppressors based on pressures etc

The Osprey was designed to be used “wet” or “dry.” If you are going to shoot “wet” for
increased sound suppression, insert a small amount (about 5 cc) of an ablative medium into
the back of the suppressor.

I'd be curious to learn the approved process for clearing a suppressor that's been submerged; whether there are any special dance steps that can assure you won't over pressurize the tube when firing. Is it still (was it ever) a thing to use condoms and RTV to limit water entry?

I am by no means at a pointy end of a stick to definitively answer your question. I would imagine the process is similar to clearing the rest of the gun...opening up the chamber/unscrewing the can and dumping the water out. FWIW, when I was going through ROTC, there was a SEAL going through the ECP program a year or so ahead of me and at some point this subject came up. He said it was pretty common to use condoms and rubber bands when coming in over the beach.

Independent of the Osprey...

From Surefire's manual:

To eliminate first round flash, detach suppressor and add a small amount of water into the rear of the suppressor or submerge suppressor under water. Be sure to drain all excess water before re-attaching suppressor.

NOTE: A "wet" suppressor can be used in potentially flammable environments; it reduces the possibility of a secondary ignition.

As Former11B said, no doubt part of a MILSPEC requirement.

We used condoms for years on chest darts as makeshift flutter valves. Necessity being the mother of invention. Now we just stab the chest and let it vent. I was once asked "Joel, why the 10 gauge?" My reply was stolen directly from the great Sir Edmund Hillary. [:D] Moral of the story: breathe deeply around the Medics.

Yes as originally intended but I frequently used it on my 300 BO with suppressed rounds and Klein Wire Lube for shooting wild pigs.

Gel stays in place as when the water evaporates.

Subsonic rounds are much lower pressure than full power rounds, which most manufacturers highly recommend against using while shooting wet. That’s my point

Yeah, the 33 is great on a pencil barrel 14.5”. About the same balance as a

Quick question... I see people mount their lights on the right side of the handguard like you did here... I put mine on the left and I also have a VFG.

While I am running the rifle I can easily depress the tail switch with my left thumb without breaking my hold. That's why I put it there.

I guess my question is are you a lefty (hand not politics)? LOL

First - that guitar case is going to be badass. Very cool!!! [emoji41][emoji106]

Second - Boiler: I've tried the electric knife, and then an electric wire (heat) cutter for foam. What I discovered is that I suck at cutting foam. So - Frank Eaton lives in Farmington, MO - about 90 min from my house. I heard about him from a LGS, so I looked him up. Just purchased a set for my Pelican 1700 and will be getting a LR 308 set for a 1720 case. I love his product. Once I get one finished and all set up, I'll post a pic. SS is a good place to buy but generally not as fast by 4-6 weeks due to their mass mailing/batch submission process.

Those are both really nice, UW. That B5 stock must be extra crunchy vs the creamy peanut butter of the other stuff. I think this came up before, but I should I presume you are lefty based on the light set-up?

What's your view on shooting the HK? I've heard less than flattery comments about them from a few sources. Any comparison you can draw against other piston offerings, like LMT? I love HK roller locks, but I just haven't been able to get excited about their ARs at those prices. Not saying I wouldn't love to have one. Maybe I should pick up the Brownells lower before July 1, but I just don't see myself dropping and $3+K on the parts kit etc when I still have a MWS to build.

gatordev
12 June 2019, 18:37
The calculus for the Brownell's kit falls apart for me because there's no HK barrel. That really is the heart of the system. I'd really like to shoot a 14.5 or 16" version of a 416, though, just to compare it to the 10.4".

I have just shy of 1,800 rounds through mine and it's unnecessary for the world I live in. But it's still fun to shoot. A bit more recoil impulse than a 10.3" DI gun, and a little gassier, assuming the DI gun is ported correctly. The HK is exceptionally accurate. I work with a guy who was a Marine infantryman and he eventually carried the M27 with an ACOG on top in AFG. He said he really liked the rifle, it was very accurate, and was a step up from the SAW.

Correct, I'm a lefty. If I were you and had a remote interest in a future 416, I'd pick up a Brownells Lower, especially with the climate in this state. Plus they're $299 now instead of $399, well worth it IMHO. Try to catch it on a 10% off or $30 off $300 deal and you have a winner.

gator pretty much nailed it. The math doesn't work out with the Brownells kit, especially without a barrel and the bolt. You're really just left with some lower parts, a crappy quad rail and some other bits. At those prices, you can wait for a PD trade in at Clydes Armory or other places. The PD trade in market is drying up from what I understand as departments didn't adopt 416 in masses, and are moving away from them because of expense.

The recoil impluse is sharper and noticeably more gas. If you get a newer one with a vented gas block, it may help with those issues. If you want a piston gun, I'd just get a SCAR, which IMHO is the best suppressor host on the market, or a PWS. The 416 however is iconic, and I just had to have one. It's a tack driver and everyone who's shot mine always walks away with a smile. I ended up with 2 only because I got consecutive serial #'s on the uppers, so I figured my 2 year old needed one too. I got lucky on this one. Used a pre-existing SBR to put the stock on, then used a 7.5" Ballistic Advantage barrel on the HERA Arms 7" MLOK rail, with the SF can it fit like a glove.

That's a great combo Jerry. How many shots can you get before a) it's too loud and b) the wipes are worn out? I assume you shoot it wet ... grease or wire pulling gel or something else?

Always loved the looks of that suppressor Jerry. Soooooooooooo short.

Thank you Sir(s). Works best wet - wire pulling gel from Lowes. First 5 or 6 shots are as quiet as the TiRant. Falls off quickly after that though.

Good to know, thanks. That's a Poseidon correct? I love the size ... never considered a pistol can because they are typically so huge ...

Yes, Thompson Machine Poseidon - First Generation. GriffonSec has a second generation. Flat front, "looks" a lot better, same efficiency.

Lot of shorter K cans now in 9mm, might want to think about those Dave. Not much longer than the Poseidon. Like you I generally didn't do pistol cans because they were so long.

It's definitely worth $99. I should have bought 3 of these for that price.

Question: on the pistol, there is a white circle advice and to the right of the ejection port - what is that?

Mustangfreek got it right; it’s the other side of the “killswitch” on a WAR upper

I'm out of the loop on that one, just read it's webpage. Seems like a good deal in principle. Does it work as advertised?

I wasn't familiar with those, either, but the more I think about it the more I like the concept. How are you liking it?

I’ve got two; I’ve had one for probably 5-6 years and the second one for 3-4.

I like them a lot. Not as tunable as an adjustable gas block, since there’s one setting for unsuppressed, one for suppressed, and an “off” setting

The gas tubes are “proprietary”, but I think someone could make their own by cutting down the respective length tube and filing it to fit. Wouldn’t be as pretty but it would function in an emergency.

I’ve got some pictures of the inside of the switch I’ll dig up tonight

Finally joined the stamp collectors club, so I obviously had to put my new can on the most practical gun I own.

You should. It's a fun gun to run, and the CQR stock and grip are a lot more comfortable than I thought they would be.

Wonder what that would handle with a 14.5 barrel without suppressor? I know it wouldn't be the best Close Quarters gun, but it looks like it would swing like a nice pair of Ta - Ta's or a nice O/U shotgun.

Thanks. It seems the Portrait/bokeh option isn't all that forgiving on the iPhone. Something that's a little annoying given the resolution of the actual image. Still, it's pretty amazing at what it can do when used as Apple initially intended.
