I understand there are popular spray coatings like ceracoat but why not powder coating? Thickness for some mating surfaces could be a problem. Any success stories?

While it would be fine on non mating parts, you'd probably have to resurface even the simplest interface, like rail to barrel nut to fit the parts together properly. Also, you'd run into color matching issues worse than Cerakote vs. other brands.

What part are you wanting to powder coat?

Too much build up and poor performance with any hot surfaces. I powder coated a rail for a friend and it built up enough that most picatinny accessories would no longer function on the rail. It's also not nearly as durable as Cerakote.

This, plus it's more prone to chipping off in large pieces.

Powder coating would also fill in roll marks and possibly serial number engravings.
