View Full Version : Forward Controls Design Sling Keep

One day I was cleaning my parts bin, and found a piece of shock cord and Cordloc. I made it into something that keeps my sling from flopping around when the rifle isn't slung, which is most of the time unless I'm training or at a range.

I was using a piece of elastic cord from my ACOG ARD for this role before, but what I cobbled together is much better, because I can adjust it, and put it anywhere I want.

That is how Sling Keep came to be [:D]

The finished product functions much the same way as the one I made from parts in a bin, the ends are properly sealed and cinched/protected with a Zipcord.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i314/Duffypoo/sk4_zpsgpiqq9ht.jpg (http://s75.photobucket.com/user/Duffypoo/media/sk4_zpsgpiqq9ht.jpg.html)

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i314/Duffypoo/sk3_zpsw7yjprsr.jpg (http://s75.photobucket.com/user/Duffypoo/media/sk3_zpsw7yjprsr.jpg.html)

Durability and adjustability are two of its main features. Unlike a rubber band that's not UV protected, the elastic shock cord is far more durable. Sling Keep is shipped partially assembled, it can be looped through holes and slots found on a stock.

The charging handle simply rides and rolls over the cord if the cord is in the path.

Sure you can make your own as we did, or use a free rubber band, do know its limitations though.

Sling Keep isn't fancy, it has a job to do and it does it inexpensively [:D]

Remember it's all about if works or not. And works well at that.

Not about if it looks good or fancy. But it looks like it can be blinged out somehow.

A Starlingear lanyard bead would fancy it up right and proper.

No more lobster claw rubber bands, you mean my $1k + rifle wont be ghetto fabulous with a red rubber band anymore?

Duffy

Haha you guys know what buttons to push [:D]

In my younger days, I had flashy things, and spent most of my money on clothes and cars, I still have some left over form that era but have grown wiser since. I went from a Cayenne Turbo S to a Diesel SUV, from Giorgio Armani and Hugo Boss everything to a polo shirt and shorts everyday, these days I emphasize and appreciate things that actually matter, appearances without substance are dishonest and designed to deceive.

We've discontinued anything made in titanium, LDFA was the only product ever made in Ti and it will be 4130, black nitrided going forward.

Q: Know what that white stuff is in bird poop?

A: That's bird poop too. [:D]

Polo shirts are pretty fancy, that's what made those Magpul videos good.

Took some new pics today with odd assortments of stocks and slings :P The adjustable length/tension does come in handy when dealing with long, wide, or thick padded slings.

As fancy as the receiver on which it is based, many of you are already a fan of this company and its products. We're only making two changes to it :)

Don't forget about that one time run of FCD engraved forged /stripped lower receiver... [adore]
Those will sell out instantly around here. Roger, I will even give you the money in advance! Who's in??

Duffy
17 September 2017, 16:26
Not sure about lowers at the moment, we can probably have them made, but we can't sell them ourselves, the logistics will need to be worked out, and it may not be easy.

Stone
17 September 2017, 17:12
Thanks Roger, I know you got a lot going on. Throw it on the back burner and if you get some free time crunch the numbers and maybe a quick design. A lot of company's do pre-sales to generate needed capital for a project and we all trust you.

Thanks stone, that could be a way to convince our partner in crime when they're already bought and paid for. I don't like to hold on to customers' money, it inevitably leads to hurt feelings, but I think there are ways to minimize that. We'll have to see how the URF (tentative name for our upper, till something better comes along, it's not easy to think of a cool name that has the letters UR in it lol)

Haha, UR is kind of hard to have in a name and sound cool right? I think URF is where we'll be going, it's somewhat in keeping with our naming conventions.
RKM = Retrofit Kit, Matech
URF = Upper Receiver, Forward Controls (why not URFC...I just like URF better :P)

Can you imagine the shit storm that would follow lol. I was against the selector's name (BAD-ASS), it's just unbecoming and crude for a product name. As it turned out, the name did its job and is easy to remember, I still don't dislike it any less.

I'd like a product to stand on its own, its name is nothing but an identifier to me, it might as well be numbers (which we also use). On the URF, I debate whether to have the company name on it at all, a simple Cygnus logo would be sufficient. It's likely it'll just have a tiny laser engraved Cygnus logo and URF on the side.

For LRF (yep you guessed it correctly), if it comes to be, would be likewise. It'll have a tiny Cygnus logo somewhere inconspicuous, but other markings will be its manufacturer's roll marks and SN, the Cygnus logo simply notes our tiny involvement.

LRF would re a reality if URF does well, so we'll see.

On a Sling Keep related note, other color options will be available early next week.

Available colors of cords, Cordloc and Zipcord:
Black
Tan
Foliage green

On the ordering page, all three parts can be configured with color options, thus it is possible to have your Sling Keep configured with a black cord, tan or foliage green Cordloc and Zipcord; tan cord with foliage green or black Cordloc and Zipcord, etc.

For an AR with all black furniture, I like mine with black cord, tan or foliage green Cordloc and Zipcord to provide some contrast. At least I'd want the Cordloc to be a different color so it's easy to find.

We keep finding new ways to use Sling Keep :P

The ability to adjust it makes a significant difference between a DIY rubber band and Sling Keep. I usually have it around my stock, but it can be almost anywhere you want and do its job there.

A customer submitted picture shows it in use with the Magpul SG stock, looped through the SG stock's footman loop.

A variation of the original Sling Keep is now available in limited quantities, in foliage green only. FDE will be available soon.

Sling Keep B uses a 1" wide nylon elastic, and an ITW Nexus GTLL Ladderloc for quick adjustment.

The additional width enables Sling Keep B to hold chem lights, tourniquet, or bandages on the stock. As the 1" Nylon elastic webbing provides more elastic tension, a pull tab is integrated on Sling Keep B to help pull the elastic webbing clear the stock while the sling, chem light, tourniquet or bandages are being tucked in.

David, is that too much or too little? [BD]

Raw material wise, Sling Keep version A and B cost the same. But there is substantially more labor involved in Sling Keep B. There have been suggestions to use different quick adjust hardware and wider nylon elastic. We can do complicated designs, but always choose the simplest for a simple device.

Also, both versions of Sling Keep ultimately compete with free rubber bands, never mind both version A and B are far more sophisticated and durable, if we made it more complicated and expensive, it'd take on a life of its own, and will no longer be an affordable and practical item you'd buy without having to balance your budget to avoid a government shutdown.

A few folks have mentioned they liked the idea of attaching a tourniquet to the stock. We obviously didn't come up with the idea, but we'll be carrying CAT tourniquets soon to compliment Sling Keep B and B5 stocks we carry [:)]

Thank you David! :P

Sling Keep B is now available with CAT tourniquet as a bundle. I removed batteries and everything else in my grip and stock storage compartments long ago. I think most people put things in the compartment because it's there to accept something, while leaving the compartments are probably better off left empty. The CAT tourniquet is something I would carry on the stock on a regular basis, and worth its weight.
