So I am looking for a new scope probably to purchase around autumn. Here is what I am looking for:

1. Mid range variable (4-24x mag range and anything in between as long as the max magnification is at least 12x).
2. Non Chinese
3. Around $500.
4. Preferably a 30mm tube, but 1" tube is acceptable.
5. Rugged.

Use is on a 5.56 AR set up for more precision shooting. This rifle is just a paper puncher, though I like all of my equipment to be SHTF ready so take that into consideration.

Don't need anything immediately as what I have works in the mean time and I need to save a few hundred bucks.

Pick 2

Rugged and Non Chinese...Would be willing to spend extra but can't do $1000. Also willing to look at the preowned market.

$500, I'd get a Vortex Viper PST or their HS-T line.

Made in the Philippines.

Used is really a good way to go when you're on a budget. Optics just don't hold their value on the secondary market.

10x Not 12x

A steal if you could bust your budget slightly.

This. Higher end optics can often be had for 50% off if you can live with a few scuffs and scratches.

I was looking at something kinda like this...

http://www.primaryarms.com/vortex-viper-hs-4-16x50mm-lr-riflescope-vhs-4307-lr

But...I can definitely deal with a few scuffs for a good value on the used market.

I've got a Viper HS LR on my SPR-ish build and it's good for the $, IMO (although I got a steal of a price on mine). You should easily be able to get another 10% off that MAP.

Oh yeah, I will be shopping around.

Refurb here, but with Vortex, all warranty and everything carries over. Great way to save money on their products.

Crap, that's tempting. I need some glass for my .308 and that would do the trick, but I think I'll hold off and save my pennies for an SHV.

That's probably a bit of overkill for 5.56, though, IMO.

Just get an ATACR... you deserve it.

Perhaps after I pick up a Tikka T3X TAC A1 in .260, but I need to be doing a lot more shooting beyond 200 yards first.

I ended up getting a Vortex VIper HS 2.5-10x with BDC reticle from the classifieds on another site. It was "used" but essentially new in the box for $260. The outer wrapping was removed, but everything else was still in the internal packaging. I feel like I got a steal on this. I wanted more magnification at first, but after mounting the scope, I can tell it is going to meet my needs just fine.

Sounds like a good deal , the bdc reticle...ehhh..they aren’t my first choice but it’ll work

I like its simplicity. I can plug my ammo into the ballistic calculator and am good to go.

Sure, if that’s what your after you can dial it in to whatever ammo but long range I’m not gonna want bdc, ranging , holdovers etc are easier for me without the bdc.

But 260 for that was a good deal it sounds like.

The Vortex BDC uses MOA subtensions at 1.5, 4.5, 7.5 and 11 MOA so it seems it would be pretty easy to work with compared to many/most other so-called "BDC" reticles out there (i.e., it's not calibrated to a specific caliber/load)

Nice deal, rxer. That should get you on target.

My point was depending how you tend to shoot, bdc is not the first pick for most, and it does depend on bullet used 55 gr isn’t gonna land in the same spot as a 77gr..anyways , we can discuss this in another thread not to derail.
