View Full Version : USA going to 6.8 SPC?

I just read an article, purportedly from Popular Mechanics magazine, that the Army will be ordering M4's in 6.8 SPC in the M4, to replace all of their 5.56 rifles. The Marines have chosen to stay with the NATO round. Also some squabbling over NATO interchangeability, or lack of. Anyone else heard of this from a reliable source?

While numerous sources are citing the move to 6.8mm, no one has stated that it will be the 6.8 SPC. At a minimum, I'd expect them to take the pressure levels higher, such as the non-standard 6.8 SPC II, but we'll see what happens.

We’ll see. That’s an expensive change

I do believe the article stated 6.8 spc II - I wish I could find it again, was just cruising the 'net when I came across from that. It might not be too expensive for new weapons, converting old ones would cost a bunch, and ordering about a trillion rounds of ammo;)

Great, BU, as usual. It seems they are building a new weapon around the 6.8 SPC II, rather than converting M4's. Don't feel so lonely since my last build which is a 6.8 SPC II . ;)

There are no less than 5 chamberings for this ammo. The original SPC resulted from a mistake in the specs submitted for SAAMI certification and is all but defunct. The SPC 2 can safely fire all types of SPC ammo. The 6.8 ARP is the best variation on the cartridge chamber for accuracy I’ve found. The Noveske’s are a close second. I’ve shot hogs out to 450-500 yards with a 10.5” barrel. IMO it’s the most versatile small frame AR cartridge made. Well that’s not some BS wildcat that reaches 10 fps more with no commercial ammo.

One of my favorite rifles. 6.8 ARP.

More press: https://www.foxnews.com/tech/new-army-bullets-bigger-bolder-and-harder-hitting It seems that a lot of people were confused by the Army's original press release. Although the bullet will be 6.8 mm, the round itself is going to be much different than the current crop of 6.8mm's available today. It won't be compatible with any of the 6.8's currently on the market, if I read the new release correctly.
