So. I may have come into a nice little chunk of change here recently, and I’m wanting a lower, high-end 1911. Now. I already own an RIA Tactical. And I love it. No complaints. AT ALL. I just want another one. Higher than another RIA. Here are my options.

I had an SA Mil-Spec? years ago. Had to sell it. But. My RIA shoots circles inside that SA. I’ve never shot a Sig. Of ANY sort. 1911. 226. 229. 320. Nothing. But I’ve always read and heard great things about them. The Sig is the TacOps. Black. Threaded barrel. Railed. I think you can see a trend here. Haha. I’d like to maybe eventually run a can on it and a light. It’s not a requirement, but still. I know I can always change a barrel out which is no big deal. Anyway. Any help to lean one way or another would be appreciated. Thanks.

Lower, high end. LOL. I like the verbage.

I'd definitely go with the TRP. Or Dan Wesson for a bit more cash.

I have a Sig 1911 and it is BY FAR the most accurate pistol I own. It's not even a close competition. I have to pull it out and get the model numbers as I think they have since made changes. Mine went to the Sig Custom Shop and all that so it wasn't cheap but it's a very very nice pistol.

Mine doesn't have rails or lights, but I am sure I could find a threaded barrel for it when I need it.

I've had mine for several years and while it wasn't cheap, even my old school gunsmith/FFL guy that handles guns every single day--when I picked it up from him he went '*&%$#ing hell! That %&#&ing thing is %&&#^ing awesome and *&%^$ing beautiful! I look at guns all the time and that *%&#&ing thing is &%^#*ing NICE as hell! Now you want me wanting to buy a &%&#*ing Sig!"

(edited for censorship purposes--but you get the idea of his personality and his opinion)

Literally on my first day shooting it I put an old Amazon box out about 15 yards out and started shooting at it, carefully, to see if anything was wrong. About the 5th shot in I got mad as hell. I was missing the box all together! Or so I thought. I went up and inspected and half of my rounds were in the same hole. I said 'nevermind' at my outrage and now I would never part with that pistol.

Can't say anything at all about other Sig 1911's but mine is great.

OP—I’ve had a few SA 1911’s, they are decent. But my entry level dan Wesson heritage beats them all for not much more money.. it’s stupid accurate, nice trigger and overall fit and finish is very good.

I try to please. Lol.

I was NOT expecting the TRP to be as high as it was. I was thinking same price point as Sig. man, was I WRONG! Haha. It’s not marked off though. Still perusing. Still finding other options. I had no idea there were so many options for a 1911 with a rail. Geez.

I’ve been looking at the DW’s too, since UWone said something about them. I just can’t find what I’m wanting all combined into one pistol. I’m being EXTREMELY picky about this weapon selection. Usually, I’m not, but I don’t want to throw down this type of money and get a gun and not be 100% enamored with it. Ya know?

Talking to my dealer yesterday and one of his friends that works part-time for him, was getting prices and asking opinions. The friend, spoke on the subject of a lot of people him knowing had teething problems with SA’s , along with him, and even his Kimber, so bad, to send them back. And then STILL have some teething problems afterward. Said the higher end guns say they need to lap in and to use less lube so they mesh together better from usage/wear. Any truth to that? I know high end over/unders wear in. I run a 686 Silver Pigeon I and they get better the more they shoot. The friend also said it seems to be a lot of mag issues, where you buy an SA, and basically throw the factory mags away or in a stock pile, and run Wilsons or CMC’s, and problems go away. (I’m a CMC guy personally). The gun dealer, said of all the Sig 1911s he’s sold, theres not really anybody EXCITED over them, but he hasn’t heard anything bad either. Should I TRUST a Sig more over an SA out of the box? Or maybe just bad days in QC departments and since there’s probably more SA’s sold than Sigs, you’re gonna hear about more “issues”? I’m putting a LOT of thought into this. And also. Found a couple more options. I didn’t realize S&W made a railed version! Its a NICE looking gun. So that’s on the radar now. And SA’s RO Operator and RO Elite. I’d like the Elite more if the slide didn’t have the “flash” on the back end of the slide clearly stating its an Elite...Whoopty do. Haha. And I kinda wish the RO Operator had an ambi-safety, but thats a slight part change. No biggie there. Just again, with the amount of money, I should be able to get what I want. SA Custom Shop? I hear they do GREAT work. On more than just SA’s too. So...any other advice/opinions? I’m all ears.

I'm no 1911 expert, but the midrange 1911's like Sig's, Springfields, are what I see are shooters. I see guys at the range shooting these guns all the time. Probably because they don't mind putting rounds down range at this price point. No one is going to get excited about them, because there is nothing "special" about them.

Then again when you step up to a Wilson Combat, Nighthawk, ect, you don't see them getting shot, a lot of them end up as safe queens. So take your pick.

You planning on shooting this one a lot?

I'm not all sure what they did. But I know one thing was to de horn it. Which had zero impact on accuracy. I think that model at the time went to the shop to remove all snag points for concealment.

I think mine is an RCS. It's got a shorter handle so you can conceal it much easier.

Mine might have had some trigger work done too. Mine has an adjustable trigger that is awesome. They might have also done some minor fitment stuff as well. If anything the trigger helps with accuracy more that anything.

All in all I would wonder what your end use was. When I bought mine I had the idea that all of my pistols at that time could be concealed so that's why I picked that model.

At a certain point you move from function to Jessie James Mexican artwork guns with gold inlay.

I've shot some cheap ass 1911s and there is a big difference but overkill on some stuff is just fluff. It would be like buying a $5000 James Yeager signature series AR.

I've never had even a stovepipe on mine but others I've shot could barely make it through a mag or two or were so ammo picky that it just wasn't worth it.

Those guns you see are more the "sweet spot" guns not just on price either. They balance all the stuff that really matters without all the fluff and just make good stuff. That's how I see mine.

It's no STI but I would carry it and have done so with out batting an eye.

There are several key areas in 1911s that can make a gun really reliable or not shoot worth a crap and some of those are really cheap and some of those are really expensive.

You may not be a 1911 expert per se, but you know guns. You know a lot of people who USE their guns. So. I do value your opinion. And that does make sense actually about “nothing special”.

Ya know. Thats a good point! Definitely will NOT be a safe queen! None of my guns are.

I mean, yeah? Haha. Your “a lot” and my “a lot” are different definitions I’m sure. Lol. I work so damn much, I don’t get as much range time as I’d like. 12 and 19 days on at a time. 8 and 10hr days. But when I DO go shooting, my RIA and GP100 are what I shoot the most pistol wise. They’re my favorites. So. This one would be thrown in the mix as well.

Ahh, okay.

I’m not worried about concealment. This isn’t gonna be a CCW gun.

Trigger work DOES help immensely. Trigger work, and trigger time.

End use, is home defense and range gun. Like I said previously, I’d like to run a can on it eventually. Hence a threaded barrel, but the more I look, the fewer threaded ones I see. I can always fit one to it. But I would like the rail for either a light or laser. This would be a bedroom gun to keep beside the bed. Retire the RIA to a range/truck gun. So. I need something I can completely 100% trust with my life and whomever else could possibly be with me in the house.

For example on some guns like Kimber they are super tight and considered high end. Other high end guns have zero variance in tolerance. The chambers on some of those guns (the few that I've shot) were so tight that if the guy doing the loading at XYZ ammo factory didn't have the crimp just perfect the gun wouldn't work.

Yes they were perfect by spec but practical not as much.

Same story with slide weight or spring tension. Some of the guns are built so good that only one or two types of high end ammo will work in them.

Several other things can be mentioned as well

Without actually handling the guns it's hard to say. Trigger time matters. Those "mid pack" guns will be a better fit for your use since you aren't going to have it on display in a museum.

The other things other than external design features is to make sure the gun is in time with various ammo. One of my cousins bought a Taurus that was a piece of shit. Couldn't get through a mag because of timing issues which goes back to weight and balance of certain components.

That mid pack will be the place to look, then just go finger bang a few. Barrels are easy to fit. I fit one on a CZ and it runs like a champ.

You might want to get a good midrange gun and do select upgrades on it, like barrel, sites, trigger etc.

I have exactly that Springfield Loaded Parkerized. I did a little A/B at the store, found one with a great trigger and jumped at it. It's run flawlessly. I can see some folks not liking the guide rod, I had to work in a couple of pretty sharp corners and I've migrated to WC 47D mags for it. Based on that experience, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

For a little more cash, and if you're OK with an alloy frame, you could be looking at a Dan Wesson Vigil. I think that's my next 1911, in 9mm. If it's ANYTHING like my DW Specialist in terms of workmanship, it'll satisfy nicely. I suggest giving the DW catalog a very long look to see if something clicks for you.

I only own a few 1911's.

A Colt 80 Series, plain jane. It shoots, but I rarely take it out.

A Wilson Combat CQB 1911. Fun shooter, great trigger, accurate, just a great overall pistol

My Kimber Pro Carry II... only reason I own it, it was my Duty gun for 10 years. I broke it often, and even though we bought them at a time when Kimber's reputation was a lot better than it is now, it made me realize a 1911 is not optimal for duty.

Honestly out of those guns the Wilson gets shot the most, simply because it's such a great gun. I will admit I bought it used, so putting more rounds down range with it wasn't going to bother me. Maybe if I had a pristine one, I'd be more reluctant.

Anyhow, I'd get the one that you find you will actually shoot. Safe queens are an expensive paper weight.

Nothing real fancy, but out of the box it has ran well, eats everything and WC and cmc mags all day. This is bone stock other then the grips..

It’s a 2012 model, less then 200 of these roughly that year, so there not a custom per say , but next to it. Tight out of the box and after a few K it’s damn near the same and just won’t miss a beat.

Seriously. Why build a gun THAT tight on tolerances? I understand they want it to be a high end gun, but it should at least work properly. Maybe they think people buy them and don’t shoot them and just want them to look good? Overpriced paper weight, much? Haha

I do want to find somewhere where I can handle all these variations. But I’m afraid I won’t be able to find somewhere. Kimber. SA. Sig. Sure. Not a problem. They’re everywhere. But the more I see people saying Dan Wesson, I want to find some and handle them.

Well. It WAS a Taurus. What do you expect? Lol.

I would trust myself with barrel fitment. Even trigger work. So, I’m not afraid of buying one, then changing out stuff I want to upgrade. Thats half the fun. Becoming one with your firearm. Good times.

It seems like SA’s are a hit or miss with people. I run CMC mags in my RIA. Seems like also, a lot of “problems” I hear about, are alleviated with mag changes to WC or CMC. I’m okay with that!

Is the Specialist an alloy frame too? I’ve actually been eyeing that one...How is recoil with an alloy compared to a steel frame? Negligible or noticeable?

CMC 10rd’ers here. Love them. Balances the gun VERY WELL, when its fully loaded.

Seems like they’re more popular than I thought. And here when I saw them before, I kinda scoffed at them. Didn’t Wesson used to not have a great reputation? And then CZ bought them, or they’ve always owned them? And I’ve heard not so great things about CZ’s shotguns. .22’s are phenomenal. People seem to love their pistols though. Seem to be hit and miss there too for some reason.

Thanks

Yes a Dan Wesson heritage with Dahmer grips..it doesn’t usually wear them as they are a somewhat project set and just haven’t finished them.

These are right around the $1k mark.. Like I said, I’ve had some higher end SA’s and they weren’t anything this DW is fit and finish, triggers, accuracy. Even though , these and there pointman and another are on Dan Wesson’s “low end” of there offerings ,this thing is full high quality materials out of the box and no MIM parts or plastic mainspring housings etc.

Even the $1k colt 1911 rail model I had didn’t hold a light to this thing.....traded that sloppy mess away..quickly.

Finding shops that carry DW’s aren’t as common but the good/bigger stock stores somewhere around you should have some.

Only problem with this Dan Wesson or any other is...

You will want more..lol..the valor would be my next one or the 9mm guardian...but that new Razorback 10mm...hummm....

I own both Sig and Springfield 1911s; 2 Sigs (Scorpion and Nickel) and 2 Springfields (Micro Compact and Full rail TRP).

Having shot 1000s of rounds through them, I would say that you can not go wrong with either the TACOPS or the TRP. All of them have functioned flawlessly and all 4 of them are dead on accurate. The Sig's recoil is slight more than the TRP due to the lighter weight frame and lower spring #. However, the lower spring # does make the Sig run like butter. I would absolutely say that the trigger on the TRP is far superior to either of the SIGs. Its hard to explain but it really does feel like a glass break point on the TRP. The Sigs have good trigger feel also but the TRP is just crisper.

The Sigs are assembly line guns whereas the TRP is a semi-custom gun that has a few hand fit parts.

If I had to choose, I would definitely take the TRP over the Sig everyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

Dan Wesson Specialist is another semi custom gun that lots rave about and should be on par price wise with the TRP, but I have never shot one, so I can not give you any first hand feedback on that.

One key difference that you will immediately notice between them is how the extractor functions. The TRP is an internal extractor that may need to be adjusted over time and the Sig is an external extractor. Some purists prefer internal and some dont really care. Also the profile of each 1911 is different. The TRP has the standard rounded slide profile and the Sig has more of a squared profile.

Everyone that mentions magazines are absolutely correct that you need good ones to function. I would say that the WC mags and far superior to the CMC mags based on the follower. The WC mags that I own have a solid follower and the CMC mags have a split follower. The CMCs can be a PITA to load due to the way the follower is made. The Sig mags are great as well, I would consider them to be slightly below WC but better than the CMC mags.

ETA: The front grip serrations are a big difference also. Sigs are way more comfortable. The TRP will make your fingers raw if you shoot too much without gloves

Is the Specialist an alloy frame too? I’ve actually been eyeing that one...How is recoil with an alloy compared to a steel frame? Negligible or noticeable?

Forged stainless. Specs at https://danwessonfirearms.com/product/specialist/

I don't own an alloy 1911.....yet. The Vigil may be my first and it won't be .45 ACP anyway. It would take a pretty dedicated 1911 collector to have comparable models with the same recoil system and grips, but different frame composition. Maybe Jerry?

I've been a little reluctant to chime in here because I am nowhere near an expert (former drip under pressure [BD] ) but I do have a dozen, or so, 1911's. Anywhere from a Colt I assembled from a factory second slide and frame from J&G (somewhere in Texas) back in the late 70's to a couple of Les Baer's - one with the 1.5" guarantee, and a Ruger that John Harrison did a full-house conversion on. All but the Ruger are in my carry rotation, and I shoot it a lot at the spring and fall shoot, just don't want to carry it. I have been very fortunate in that all have been flawless so far. If you want a "low high end" I have to agree with other posters about the Sig 1911. I have a Tac-Ops TB that shoots (with my old eyes) as well as the Les Premier II with the inch-and-a-half guarantee. They all feed anything from my reloads to any factory profile I choose to carry. I have some Wilson magazines, and like them a lot. I also have a crap-ton of Chip McCormick 8-round Power Mags. They are on sale more often than the Wilson, and are great magazines.

You can find Sig's on gunbroker under a grand pretty often. Would be a great choice.

I like those Tac ops.

Gear head- another option and one I would look at if your not wanting to drop a grand plus. I’ve had a few Ruger 1911’s and with a few upgrades there a great buy. These talo night watchmen have been a want. Can be found for 700’ish.

Not mine, just stole the pic

Ugh. Stop with the pictures. The Sig competes directly with my Specialist as a rail-and-well gun (I think I'll keep the DW, heh heh) and the Ruger is basically in the same space as my Loaded Springer (smooth frontstrap, night sights, traditional slide). I might prefer that Ruger's finish more than the notoriously soft Parkerizing on the Loaded.

So I don't need either cause I've got those bases covered......but I still want both of them. So please, stop it :)

As an aside, more and more I move towards "no front serrations" on 1911s. The Springfield completely shredded a couple of unlined holsters and I don't use the serrations for press-checks on 1911's very often (ever???).

Dang it.

A Ruger with ball mill end cuts and and front strap checkering? That magwell doesn't look factory and those grip panels sure aren't. Not really seeing a manufacturer's stamp on the slide. I see a few other bits and pieces have changed too

Someone had some work done - it's barely a Ruger now :)

Was looking at this thread this week thinking about picking up a 1911 for myself (traditionally a Glock guy). Stumbled upon a used SA TRP for $1,100 at one of the local shops and decided to bring it home. This is my first 1911 and .45

https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-cNDjGNL/0/ea0db757/X3/i-cNDjGNL-X3.jpg

A little wear on the expected locations. Prior owner obviously shot it.

The only thing I don't care for is the sights, but I got over that once I learned that I can get a rear U-notch / front fiber optic set of sights from Harrison Custom ( https://shop.harrisoncustom.com/hd-006-extreme-service-rear-sight )

Just my opinion, but John Harrison is the best when it comes to 1911 custom stuff. He did all the work on my Ruger shown above - except the grips.

I have not. Sadly. Haha.

*dead thread revival for sure*

I have the money now. Some things happened, not the way I planned, or wanted, things came up, etc etc. Life happens. Adulting sucks. Lol.

So. Been doing a LOT of research. Searching. Comparing. More looking. More research.

A shop a couple hours away from me, actually had a Dan Wesson Specialist the other month when I was there. I wanted to handle it and check it over, but, nobody would assist me. Got on DW’s website and started perusing. Why does it bother me so much that they only offer a 5yr warranty on their guns, where all these other companies offer lifetime.

I still want a .45. I still want railed. These two, I believe are my top choices. In this order.

The bad news....the S&W has been completely discontinued. So. I’ll have to find an an NOS gun somewhere that hasn’t been plucked yet by anyone, and I have managed to find a few. So. Thats a plus. The SA...I just don’t really want a gun that everybody else has. Haha. I know, weird. So. Does anybody know of or have anything to say negative about the TA E-series. With those scallops, I think it’s one of the most beautiful 1911’s I’ve ever seen. I know I didn’t list a TRP. I would have no problem spending the extra dough, I just don’t like the rear target sight on it instead of a carry-type sight. Why did they do that anyway?!

I know quite a few people have said Sigs as a go-to as well. I’m looking at the Tac Ops currently on their website, but only a 10mm. No .45? Uhh, what!? BUT. I DO like the fact that it comes with 4 mags from factory. That’s pretty badass!

I’d like to be able to order one or buy one in person this weekend if I can find the right one.

Opinions?

Well. I finally did it!! Made up my mind. Picked one. Ordered it. Picked it up today. I am completely enamored with it and beside myself. This thing is so beautiful. And feels so good. NOW I know and see the difference between a low end, and a high end 1911. I’ll never be the same after this. Lol.

Solid choice Gearhead

I’ll weigh in on why the DW over his other choices from my point of view

I’ve had about every brand 1911 except the over priced bears and such, including many springers and rusty rugers , and Cracker Barrel box kimbers

- No mim parts
- either machined DW billet or stainless parts or fitted Ed brown parts
- semi custom/well as close to you can get for the money
- they only make small number of batches per year
- my older DW is a November built gun and less then 400 of them built that year /as their serial number is their build count
-Better trigger then any other out of the box 1911
- No stupid nomar/bomar or whatever sights like the springers
- no ghey uncomfortable ambi safety
- nice checkering and nice tight fit

It’s the only choice in the 1-1500 price range in my humble opinion

And DW has 22 choices listed on their website, so I'm a little curious on what drew him to that particular model. Looks like it was designed with LEO requirements in mind, so that's interesting. Looks like the TCP is the only other real railed choice from DW.

Purdy pistola, gearhead. So, of the myriad choices available, what drew you to this one?

So, my particulars were these, in no certain order:

1) blued or black. Didn’t want shiny stainless.
2) railed, due to being a beside-the-bed gun, so I can add a light to it
3) no Kimbers. Haha.
4) gov’t profile

So. At first, the typical Springfields were in order. Had to pick and choose from those. Colors. Look. Full railed or typical under-barrel pic rail. Etc etc. The Tac Ops was on the list then as well. Went back and forth between threaded or non-threaded barrel. So. I did some looking around. Some research. Seeing what all was available at all. Then, I found out about the S&W TA E-series. I completely fell in love with it. The wood grips on black. The scallop serrations. It is, in my opinion, one of the prettiest 1911’s I’ve ever seen. But. Come to find out. They discontinued production of the black one. Stainless only. So. I tried GunBroker. Local stores. Nothing. Well. That’s when I started reading more about DW pistols. No bad reviews. No bad words of them. Didn’t want an alloy frame either for a .45. One gun store about 2hrs away actually had one, and I wanted to look at it, but after 10min, nobody had helped me, so, I walked out. Then, I found the Tac Ops came with 4 mags from Sig. GREAT. Started looking for one again. Found a couple on GB. But only with one mag for some reason, and outrageously priced. Then. Found a used one, saying it had never been fired. With 4 mags. And 300rds of ammo. I sent the seller a message. Never heard back. There was ONE gov’t Specialist on there, with all the others either being 9mm, 10mm, or commander profile. So, after reading comments earlier in this thread and in UWone’s 1911 thread, I said to hell with it, and bought this one sight unseen, minus the pictures on the auction (bought it now due to being a new gun). And now, here we are. Haha.

To everyone who complimented it, thank you!! I’m so in love with this thing. Lol.
