We already have a thread for our every day carry pistols, so lets see what else you've got pictures of in the way of sidearms.

Do me a favor, for each picture, let us know if you would buy (or own) it again. If its not yours, did you like it enough to buy one if the price was right?

Below is the Sig P220, I enjoy this weapon, and its sleekness (if thats a real word). While its not an every day carry piece, its one I like. This feels good in my hand, feels good to carry, and shoot well.

I would buy one again.

Here is a nice old 1911, its a war gun, and it is not mine. A good friend brought it over, and I was able to grab a few pictures. This is a shooter, but I'm not sure that I would be out shooting it on a regular basis.

As far as the question of if I would buy one, I would probably pass. I like the weapon quite a bit, but I would rather see it in the hands of someone who would honestly appreciate it.

Patently unfair. I'm overseas, and my 1911s are all Stateside. :)

Never had one bad thing to say about an Ed Brown 1911 though ... the man knows how to build a fine .45.

Lets keep the info up to date with the pics.....

As long as you guys are slobbering over 1911s, here is one for you... I've always liked a long slide 1911, not 100% sure why, but the 5" and 6" have always seemed more welcoming to me than the 4" and shorter.

I would buy this one again.

I'll get some more pictures of it up in a bit.

Two more images of the same blaster.

I'll take a quick moment to comment on the picture shot with colored lights. This style (with firearms), to the best of my knowledge, was developed by Ichiro Nagata, and while there are loads of photographers who copy his use of colored lights, it is him who really put it on the map.

This style of lighting is heavily overused, and its hard to find a gun magazine that doesn't have some guy with a camera copying the style. You won't find me using it often, but from time to time, I'll play around with it if the subject is something that I think works with it.

I give credit where its due, and the below is a heavy variation of someone elses style.

Before I start, just want to say hello and thanks for a great forum.

What I carry -- S&W CQB in .45ACP with Factory Night Sights. Great pistol, would definitely buy another. The hat and patch were gifts from one of my sons, the rest of the stuff is in the go-bag.

My first 1911, a Series 70 .45ACP Combat Commander bought in 1970. A few mods later - Heinie Comp, sights and safety by Wilson, NP3 by Robar. Wish I had bought two.

Here's my brother's gun. He's active Army EOD and can't have this while he's overseas. This is a SIG P220 EOD Special Edition, offered by thevirginiastockade.com. He may still have a few left for anyone that has to have one. I have not had a chance to shoot this gun, but I love the way it feels and the quality is top notch.

I have a G21 for duty and a G26 for BUG and OD... but you all know what a Glock looks like. I would not personally buy a G21 unless it was a killer deal, but I would definitely buy a G26 again or any of the 9mm series.

Up until now I've been enjoying this forum in silence but I figured I'd go ahead and throw a couple of pics up here.
I bought this Officer's Model from a friend several years ago. He had had some work done on it. It's slicker than snot and a real joy to shoot. I don't carry it any more but I did on occassion for a little while:
http://www.geocities.com/warrior_1972/Knives/45CocoHunter.jpg

This is the 642 that lives in my pocket. I put the wood grips on it as soon as I brought it home:
http://www.geocities.com/warrior_1972/642.jpg
This is what usually goes with me deer hunting. Nickel 19-4. I didn't care for the target grips that were on it so I got these magnas for about $5 on ebay. They're beat up but they're fine for walking around in the woods:

Here's my S&W 629. I like it very much and I'd definitely buy another one if anything ever happened to this one.

Most of my friends enjoy shooting it more (even with full power loads) than my GLock 23.

Pretty decent gun, no issues so far. I did get a stainless guide rod to drop in, just for that couple extra ounces up front, it does have a wicked amount of flip for a 9 in my opinion.
Would I buy it again? $500 for a brand new Sig with night sights and two mags is hard to pass up.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4018/4642348462_3d3c82095f.jpg

I like this pistol and would buy one again. the only thing I do not like is for some reason when I am shooting it I have a tendency to rest my thumb on the mag release... not all the time but at least a third of the time.
the other problem I have is finding replacement sights I looked through Brownells and Midway and only found a fiber optic front [:D]sight. So from this I have a question does anyone know if there are sights for other pistols that fit it.

Here is a picture of my friend Adam shooting his Caspian... that pistol was absolutely a dream to shoot. [wow]

Two here that I used to own and one of them I regret parting with. The handgun in question is the one on top. The Kimber TLE II. Yes, it had the external extractor. No, I didn't experience any issue with extraction or ejection. The pistol ran great. I just needed money at the time... Would I buy it again. This exact one, yes. Another one, perhaps after testing it out. I understand Kimber is hit or miss on the function the the Model 2s with the EE. The other pistol is a Dan Wesson Pointman, not sure on the specifics. I didn't have that one long. The finish on the frame was not holding up well and I sold it at a gun show.

Now that is a cool picture.

I'm looking at the M&P .45 compact, but I haven't decided if I want a thumb safety or not.

Are those the factory sights?

It came with the factory installed Trijicon night sights. I'm traditionally a 1911 shooter, so the thumb safeties are nice, not so much for safety, but somewhere to put my thumb. It does cut down on holster selection though, and it's kind of a roulette of sorts if you're going for a thumb break design.

AR-10
16 December 2010, 13:32
That's why I'm leaning towards the thumb safety model, I only own two handguns right now and they are both Springer 1911's - I also practice using the same straight thumbs grip as you do so I think I would prefer to have a safety to rest my thumb on.

I just want a compact .45 that will eat anything I feed it, my Springfields are a little finicky when it comes to ammo.

I also need a pistol that can hold a light since neither of mine do and I'm not about to send one of mine out to have a light rail bolted to the frame.

Wondering Beard
16 December 2010, 17:26
In my limited experience with the M&P, having the thumb safety enables you to have your hand ride higher on the gun. I consider that a plus.

Optimus Prime
16 December 2010, 18:47
I am tempted to get an M&P45c if we get CCW here. It's one of the few "compact" pistols with a nearly full size frame and a short grip, which I think would be best for concealing. The tan frame and thumb safety would be the best for the extra cool points.

I love the P225 great gun.

I unfortunately sold this one, and I could kick myself in the ass now for doing it. My son still hasn't forgave me for my mistake.

It was a "JH" code which if I remember correctly was a 1987 production code. Never had a single malfunction with that pistol, and its accuracy was excellent. My only complaint was the trigger, I have small hands, and eventually swapped out the OEM trigger for the thinner trigger.

Some spray-on bed liner gave the worn out original grip panels some much needed traction as well as grip tape across the front of the grip, which I neatly tucked under the fronts of the grip panels.

I'm learning more about getting pics done, and these 2 will explain it. Hangun alone on a white background, good. Handgun and accessories on a white background - Fail.

My EDC, Para P13-45. Stellar Pawn Shop find, but I would pay retail on it. I prefer the double stack feel over the single stack on the 1911's.....I know I know. My only gripes are no Strider (or any other for that matter) grips for Para's, and the rear sight is unique. I'd love to get a 10-8 rear sight on this.

Work Gun - Sig P226. Prior to this I carried an H&K USP .40, that was, until my first "intense" 2 day tactical hangun course. Loved the HK, but would really hate to fight with it after that weekend. Would definitely own another Sig, maybe a more up to date version, but this hasn't let me down yet. Moved to Florida and they regulate the calibers to .380 and 9mm in auto only, revolvers have a bit more room. If they'd get a bit of common sense, I'd be carrying the Para for work too. I still can't grip about this SIG whatsoever though, great necessity purchase before the move.

The newest toy, and it is pretty much. Umarex/HK 416.22 pistol. I've read the ordeal with the Colts, haven't had an issue till I hit around 850 rds (remington gold and federal bulk) this week without cleaning it. Sprayed the bolt down with oil, runs like a champ. Going to try to hit the 1k mark before I clean it. Color me impressed with it. I ended up with it on a trade, so I don't know that I'd actually purchase one, but it has inspired me to pick up a CMMG evo drop in kit for my other rifles for more trigger time in the back yard. My 8 year old son loves it. Cycles everything so far, including CCI subsonic 40gr.

MP7 sights, as the Umarex cloned HK sights inhale with great vigor. ASAP plate cause I had an extra one laying around. Sling is SKD drop slider (hated it with the SBR, works perfect for this for some reason).

Finally got my Micarta grips back on the Para after figuring out a trigger issue. The stirrup on the Dlask trigger was binding against the grip 'ears' towards the rear. Dremel and about 30 seconds each, no more issues! I like these much better:

Nice photo GriffonSec. I have a P13 as well, but it sees little use. I stopped by the Para booth at SHOT, noticed no P13's on display and the rep told me that the P13 was no longer produced. Probably very old news, but I wasn't aware of that.

What is the texture like on those grips?

22 January 2011, 15:38
Shame to hear that, something to the compact size combined with the weight of 13 rounds that just feels.....right. I have noticed it needs to be carried close to the body due to the weight.

Believe it or not, Quib gave me the idea on these grips. I mentioned truck bed liner on my 6.8 mags, and I believe he mentioned using it on a set of Sig grips. These are the Smith and Alexander smooth micarta grips, with a light coat of TBL. Great feel, and I get to loose the finger grooved rubber ones. They did take some fitting around the safety and lower corners covering the mainspring housing pin (way sharp). They didn't interfere with the stock trigger, only the DLASK (?).

Love the feel of the grips now.

Here's my 9mm H&K P30L. I would absolutely buy this again. It's extremely ergonomic and fits my hand very well with the help of interchangeable grip panels and back strap. I shoot it well compared to other guns I've owned and find manipulation fast and comfortable. An excellent gun in my opinion.

Here are mine. CZ 82 in 9x18 and a Colt Defender in .45. Would I buy them again? I didn't buy them in the first place but yes on the CZ since it is one of the most accurate CCW size pistols I have shot and $200 is a heck of a price. The Colt probably not. I would much prefer a SIG 226 or 229 but I trade for both of them and the Colt was bought by my friend back when they came out and only has 100 rounds through it so far..

Curious how you went about mounting your Burris, as I'm looking to possibly put one on my XD. Did you use one of the Burris mounts or some other solution? And finally, did you mount it yourself or does the mount need to be installed by a 'smith? Burris is lacking any sort of instructions on their website.

Thanks,

I was surprised to see this EXO-coated Glock at the local shop the other day. After a little research I found that FailZero (http://www.failzero.com/)was coating Glock pistols in a partnership with Talo Disributors. They are making 6 models available to start with.

I've been using a FailZero Basic Kit in my M4gery for some time now and I've grown to appreciate the lubricity and durability of the Nickel-Boron coating. EXO-coated parts require no lubrication and make cleanup a breeze. Plus I think it's just neat and it looks cool. I went ahead and added it to the collection.

1000 rounds later it looks brand new and is quickly becoming my favorite pistol.

I've read that Glock is going to make the EXO coating standard. I don't know if this will become a replacement for Tenifer, or if it's just an Internet rumor. In any case, it makes an already great pistol that much better. For me, it's worth the slight increase in cost.

You are correct that there is a lack of "good" info out there.
I used one of the dozen or so mounts thay offer, the Novak/1911. It is a dove tail X-section much like the Steyr, but it is larger so............ I had to modify it a bit on one of my mills at work. Once I did that, it was a very simple install. The trick is to try to identify what sort of geometry is on your slide, and see if they have a mount that matches. If not, you will have to do what I did. The install is pretty straight forward. The way the mounting plate works with the sight, it cinches it down tight on the slide. Can't speak for all the differant possibilities, but I was surprised how well mine worked out. Next I am going to mfg. a custom mounting plate that is a little lower profile. Titanium should be nice!

Here's my project pistol, steadily becoming my pride and joy. Yes, it's a Taurus. Picked it up for around $500 after taxes used. I had hammer follow issues once I went and shot it, and after much reading, reading, talking, and more reading, went ahead and ordered Ed Brown Perfection Sear/Hammer, and Disconnector. Added a new leaf spring, mainspring, and just recently added a set of VZ Grips, the OperatorII's in slimline, Hyena Brown pattern. They actually came out much less orange than the picture on the site, but this was perfect for me. I took it to the range and 4 of us put 100 rds through with zero issues. This included a fairly petite girl who ended up liking it more than my M4gery or the .22 pistol someone let her shoot. We'll see how she really does at a 3-Gun I'll be attending here in March!

http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt323/griffonsec/triton3-1.jpg

New acquisition this week. Taken in on trade for a dropped MA-Ten project. Sig P220 Combat TB. Never really starry eyed over suppressors until now, shopping around and will try the TiRant .45 this upcoming weekend. Holster is an older Amadini Ghost III (I love it!) for my 226, slightly modified to fit the taller suppressor sights and slightly wider frame. Holsters are near non-existent for this thing. So far, I love it. I'm a Sig fan and a .45 fan, and it's a very comfortable pistol for me. Don't know that I'd up and drop the cash on one, but I think I came out a bit better in the deal:

Left: Heckler & Koch P7 (PSP). 8+1 of 9x19mm. Made October of 1987. Niedersachsen Police issued, surplussed. All-matching. "B" grade. ("A" grade must be unissued, because this is easily 95%, probably 98%.) It's a pretty nice shooter, especially considering the size. I primarily got it for the collectors' aspects. It's really a fascinating design- not every day you see a gas-retarded blow-back operated pistol chambered in 9x19mm. I love the manual of arms.

Center: Walther P1. 8+1 of 9x19mm. Made July of 1976, rebuilt November of 1990. West German military issued, surplussed. All matching, locking block is force-matched. Not in too bad of shape, but definitely "shooter grade"- probably 80-85% condition. It's a joy to shoot, and it has the steel reinforcing pin and built-up slide of the later models, so I don't have to worry too much about it cracking the frame or slide. Even so, I only feed it mild 115grain- not a hindrance, it's just for plinking.

Right: Spreewerk P38. 8+1 of 9x19mm. Made February of 1943. Nazi Germany military issued, Russian captured and refinished. All matching, no forced matches. 98% condition of Russian finish on the exterior, some pitting in the bore. Early production, one of the first 11,000 made by Spreewerk. Features early style frame, early style slide, and AEG-made Walther-inspected Bakelite grips (proper for a pistol from this block). Very accurate in spite of the pitting, really mild to shoot- needs some springs replaced to get 100% reliability, but it's not bad.

A trio Sig P250's. I favor these for the fit, handling, and the DAO trigger. I have always favored DAO for my CCW.
1) Sig P250F in 9mm. 17+1 capacity and a Streamlight TLR1s should get me to my Mossberg 930SPX with little trouble. Currently out to Sig for night sights.
2) Sig P250C in .45acp. This is my favorite CCW and truck gun. It is a little bulky for a hot weather CCW but it is just the ticket for jacket and sweatshirt weather. Currently out to Sig for night sights. I have a Streamlight TLR3 for it as well.
3) Sig P250SC in 9mm. This is my hot weather CCW. I added a Hogue Handall Jr. to it and it made the handling charactaristics much better for me as my little finger hangs below the weapon.
The modularity of the weapon was a big attractant for me. With little effort I can turn my P250F 9mm into a sub-compact .45acp.
Holsters are a little difficult to find for these but I would definately buy a P250 again.

Smith & Wesson Model 67-1 .38 Special
It belonged to my Uncle when he was a Sherriff's Deputy back in the 1970s. I added the Hogue grip, but still have the original small wooden grip that came on the gun. I did not buy the weapon, rather I inherited it, but I would not part with it for anything.

Which sights are thoses?

If you are referring to the G17 in the last post on page 12 they are Ameriglo GL433 Hackathorn sights. Great sights, I run them on 3 out of 4 of my Glocks. If you look at the top of page 12 you will see several other pics of them on G19's.

Very fast, trit insert for lowlight and I can still shoot bulls at 25yds and do walk back drills to 150 yds.

It sounds awfully wide but if you can do bullseyes at 25 yards with them, then I'm very interested.

The origin of my question comes from a guy I know who used the XS Big Dots, he is an excellent shot but couldn't put rounds into the IPSC credit card at 7 yards because he couldn't see his target behind the sights; all the rounds grouped very neatly right under it. He was using a G19.

I picked up these 2 at the LGS.

Gen 2 Glock 21 w/ Meprolights. I have done some internal work to smooth the trigger, added some extended controls, replaced the night sights with new ones, and added the mags and holster/ mag carrier combo you see in the pic. I like the Gen 2 Glocks better than the Gen 3's but do wish it had a rail for my TLR1.

I don't know what Sig does, but their ergonomics are just outstanding. I've never picked up a Sig pistol that didn't index just perfectly (for me). Finally broke down and added one to the stable.

I'm VERY INTERESTED to hear your impressions once you have some trigger time.

Finally got to the range for initial break-in. Only had time for 100 rounds. Used aluminum Blazer 230 Ball. (I hate policing brass at an indoor range) I used twelve different magazines, including one of my really old GI 7-rounders. Zero MALF's. Fired at in indoor range - set the targets at 15 yards, fired offhand. Eighty rounds without the can to see how it functioned. Twenty rounds with the can on it to be sure it cycled properly when suppressed. All rounds ejected cleanly with no dings in any case I checked. The pistol seems to be properly sprung, and the recoil was on a par with all the other 1911's in the stable. That is, not more or less "snappy" - it's just another .45 - which is what I expected.

Checkering on the front strap and MS housing nice and sharp, very grippy (25 LPI) but not uncomfortable. All in all, I am very pleased so far. I have a High-Noon holster on order for it (rail holsters hard to find) and it should be here in another four weeks or so. By then I should have enough rounds down range to be comfortable carrying it.

I think this is a nice addition. Fit and finish is excellent (should be for a $1,300 MSRP pistol) slide is nice and tight with zero wiggle. Night sights are well executed, and per the target below, are spot on.

I don't think I'll do a detailed review, people get tired of reading my poop, but I wanted to respond since you asked. Hope this helped.

There is a light checkering on the entire grip (they've got a good close up that shows it better on their site (http://vzgrips.com/gun-grips/smith-wesson-j-frame/j-frames-320s/j-frame-hyena-brown-g10).) So far, between that and the finger groove, they feel secure enough. We'll see in the morning when I hit up the range.

VZ's got ones with a checkered section in the middle, much like the factory grips, but I didn't like the look at much.

Don't backup from your photos - clear, crisp with nice detail. Thanks for sharing.

I really appreciate the shot of the Ruger. I am on the "Notify List" at Midway for a FastFire III. How do you like the little RDS on the Ruger ?

I looked pretty close at the rail on yours and it seems to have square notches more like a true picatinny. The rail that came with my MK-III 22-45 has rounded notches. I hope the bar on the Burris mount is round and not square. I found a Tac-Sol kydex style holster that is notched for the rail and RDS combo. Hope to have the sight later this month.

RowlandP
3 April 2012, 19:26
Thanks for the compliment.

The notches on the Ruger rail are indeed rounded. It's the angle that makes them look square. However, I had no problem mounting the FFII using the picatinny mount. It mounts very solidly on the Ruger rail.

As far as the sight goes, I do like it. However, on this handgun, I am more accurate using the open sights than the FFII. The FFII really is better for fast firing with good accuracy. It's not a bullseye sight, at least not for me. I have recently taken the FFII off the Ruger and placed it on top of a 3X scope I have on an AR rifle. It's very good in that role. I'm looking for an actual scope to put on the Ruger.

The FFII is a quality sight. It seems very rugged, the glass is optically perfect (no distortion at all), the dot is a nice size (4 MOA I think), and it has auto-dim feature that actually works. I understand it has auto-off but I've never checked to see if it works. The upcoming FFIII seems like a good upgrade. I have to take my sight off the gun to change the battery (which I haven't had to do yet), but you can leave the FFIII mounted and still change the battery. And I think the FFIII does away with the locking screws my FFII has on the back. My FFII also holds zero very well. It's getting pounding on my AR and hasn't lost zero yet. If the FFII is any indication, you will be very pleased with the FFIII.

Ruger SR1911. Seems pretty well made for a mass-produced pistol. Trigger averaged 6 lbs 3 ozs (ten pulls on Lyman digital). Finish is fairly uniform and the fitment of parts was good. Grips were "pretty" but not grippy. Pressed checkering with flat diamonds and a lot of urethane over them. Had to put on a set of VZ's for now. Slide to Frame fit was surprisingly tight. Barrel bushing was very snug but turns by hand. Think I'll keep it.

I just received my new Guncrafter Industries CCO. It was a custom build that someone backed out of and I had to jump on the opportunity. I'm a little unsure about the sights, 10-8 .140 U-notch rear and gold bead front but they may grow on me. I'm also planning on changing the trigger from the short to a long at some point. Grips will get swapped with Harrison Carry G10's made by VZ. It is a sexy little pistol!!! (Sorry for the crappy pics, I'm not photographer and all I have is an iPhone)

Received a Les Baer Commanche Monolith today from Crazy John at 1911 Heaven. Bead-blasted hard-chrome, nite sights, mag well, extended single-side safety, extended magazine release. The holster is a high-ride pancake made for me by Rocky at Pure Kustom. Excuse the dirty spots, I have not cleaned it. Just wiped the flats for pix, that left some stains on the serrations and checkering. Left the factory "goo" on the internals for break-in. Extremely hard to rack, suggested 400 to 500 rounds to slick it up.

I've seen a few full dustcover 1911s over the past couple days. I don't own one, but seeing them has made me remember how much I like the look.
