They fixed the code to seamlessly work with Apex Membership now.
Indeed they did. Price was too good to pass up on a STR so I picked one up with a gas tube I needed.

Got duplicate orders for some unknown reason so I sent an email to the sales dept to ask for cancellation of one of the orders.

Thank you for the suggestion. I've got one (not sure which mod) in use on my BCM sbr lower already. I like it well enough I wouldn't change it out, but imo a stippled grip 23 is just about perfect.

Intro pricing on Ballistic Advantage's new .625-blocked lightweight Hanson profile barrels (http://ballisticadvantage.com/). 3 common lengths, QPQ finish, Fail Zero extension, pinned lopro blocks, 1 MOA guarantee = potentially good value here if you're working up a lean upper.

I can't say much since I've paid similar prices for recievers, I paid almost $190 for my BAD-15 lower. Those Noveske prices are the same as they have been, matched Chainsaw Gen 1 recievers are $399. The hard to get recievers to get now are forged Umbrellas these days, and they're a little less than the Noveskes.

Joelski
10 November 2015, 07:24
Yeah, but $610 for a forged set? Granted, I just paid $197 for a San Tan upper, but higher than that and they can keep it. Everybody has a price point, I guess, I just can't see paying that much of a premium for something that's not compelling in advanced design or materials.

The $610 is for the billet Gen 3 set, the forged is $350. When the Gen 3 first came out they quoted me $350 for the lower and $316 for the upper, so they've came down a little.

Joelski
10 November 2015, 07:43
Okay, I didn't think they did billet, or maybe I misread a comment that it wouldn't have happened in the past.

Gen 1 and 2 are forged. Gen 2 has been discontinued for Gen 3 which is billet. My Gen 2 receivers were nicer than my 3, I sold my 3.

velocity2006
10 November 2015, 08:09
Agreed the Gen 2's are kind of unobtanium, and the ones I have handled were all excellent. I have been happy with my chainsaw Gen 1, but I can't say it's any nicer than the blem PSA lowers you get for 50 bucks and the Noveske was like 150 with Apex membership. You pay for the rollmark, period. I just finally had to break down and buy a lower that was made in Oregon, have ones from Idaho and Washington lol.

I agree with a lot of what the other guys have already said, The Gen 1 is the cheapest Noveske set to get started in, but basically the same features as a PSA for 150$ less.

The Gen 2 though is likely one of the best forged receivers ever made with the Battle Arms forged set equally nice. Probably the only two forged sets I'd ever pay a premium for.

The Gen 3 has slightly better machining then the 2 but is Billet. I'll likely sell mine as the 2 & 3 are visually almost identical.

My Gen 3 had machining marks in it, the Gen 2's I've had have been Chainsaws and were about spotless. They were early chainsaws though. I've also got a BAD-15 lower that I SBR'd and it's nice, but not any nicer than the Mega forged lowers I've had. Mega's consistency with their quality is some of the best I've seen and they run about $114 for a forged.

IMHO however none of the Noveske's are as nice as the CMT/Rainier mod 3's lowers like the WEVO sets. If I were just getting into ARs I'd skip the Noveske, save 100$ and buy the Rainier. They really are exceptional, and one of the best out right now

Can't fault a guy for wanting a complete series. Thanks for the pics. The stuff is definitely nice. Not sure how people are with New Frontier, but my first experience with them (ESEE billet lower) was good. Can't beat $135 for a custom lower! Plus buying the WEVO lower makes me pretty much a caffeine deficient hypocrite in relation to my comments this morning. :D

The ESEE lower was done on a variance (of course), but when I found out New Frontier made them, I checked out their site. A lot of us passed on the upper as it was kinda blocky and underdesigned compared to the lower. I am more than satisfied with the receiver, but the website.... Lets just say I probably wouldn't have bought anything from them based solely on presentation alone.

One can never have too many SSAs. But recently, i've come to like the flat bow SD-C, so maybe a couple more of those. And i broke down and bought a Maten MML receiver set and 20" Rainier Ultra Match barrel during the Apex trial weekend deal, so i'm looking at getting an SSA-E for that build, maybe a Hi-Speed (i've never shot one, but they sure sound like amazing triggers).

A lot of people like SD-E's, but personally, I've started to migrate to more SD-C's. They are a fantastic trigger.

I couldn't agree more. I've got two SD-Cs installed, and i find myself shooting those two rifles more than anything else lately. I haven't shot an SD-E, but i've always preferred the SSA to the SSA-E, so logic would dictate i prefer the SD-C. I really wish Geissele would produce a "budget" version of the SD-C (flat bow version of the G2S). That would be a value that's tough to beat.

My office is about 15 minutes away from RA, but I frequently wish they were out of state so I could purchase from them without being hit with WA sales tax (10%). I' haven't bought anything from them since since becoming an APEX memeber. The free shipping doesn't really help the math for me. Great shop, though.

Here's my question about flat triggers:

Since its never occured to me "Hey, you know what? a flat trigger would be awesome!" what is it about the lack of a bow that makes it desirable? Is it purely aessthethic? Does it add to feel? Is there greater or less indexing going on with that thing?

Splain, please!

Some say the flat bow gives better feedback for enhanced trigger control and lighter perceived pull weight. The flat bow does increase the reach for your trigger finger. My favorite Geissle trigger is either the SD-E or SD-3G.

Slippers
22 November 2015, 12:32
The flat bow also lets you place your finger down near the bottom more easily, which gives you more leverage, leading to a lighter pull weight. You can do the same thing if you pull on the tip of a normal shaped trigger, but it's not as comfortable.

It's a blessing and a curse lol. It costs me a lot of money having them so close. I used to be able to head down there on my breaks at work and be there in about 5 minutes. But, there's been ongoing road construction that's booger'd up traffic in front of my work. At any rate, i still buy a lot of things sight unseen. I don't buy junk, so reselling it if needed shouldn't be a problem.

I use a flat trigger and it for sure is not just for looks.

My first thought is that what matters more than anything is single stage vs two stage. Next is going to be pull weight and then the actual trigger design (even among flat triggers).

If you look at the CMC flat triggers they have that little hook on the end. I really like it. I put my finger down near that hook and there is no play, no over travel, and going back to reset is very quick. Plus my finger doesn't slip.

My trigger is single stage, flat, and 3.5 lbs. If you don't want the gun to go off don't put your finger on the trigger. There is no slack. I've used two stage triggers and it's just a different school. With the flat trigger to me it feels like I have much more trigger control and awareness. I will have to measure it but there 'might' be only 1/4 of an inch in total travel (or less).

The idea that it's flat is one thing... yes to me it does give a slight bit more leverage for trigger sensitivity, but not all flat triggers are the same. The CMC hook I feel helps me get a good consistent finger placement. If I am going for super accuracy for example means all the factors together means I can get off a good trigger pull without moving my finger or hand or gun all over the place. It can obviously be done with other triggers as well but it's a matter of feel and preference.

Thanks to Ben at AR15News for giving me the heads up:

If you’ve been wanting to start a pistol caliber AR build there’s not better time than right now. Quarter Circle 10 just sprung a surprise sale for Christmas and its one you need to jump on for sure. Starting right now (12/23/15) and running through Saturday 12/26/15, purchase any Quarter Circle 10 lower receiver and a Quarter Circle 10 t-shirt and you will save 30% off. I recently built one of my favorite ARs using a Quarter Circle 10 lower, barrel and BCG which is shown below. I was told you were bad this year and Santa isn’t bringing you anything so take matters into your own hands and get something nice for yourself!

OK, to go with that QC10 deal......not a deal but a (very) hard to find item.

Mark at The Riddle of Steel (tros.com) responded to a recent inquiry......a batch of 5" 9mm integrated 3 lug barrels are making their way through the shop. These are pretty unique barrels - highly sought after, not often available, pretty much the perfect length to keep factory 147's subsonic and immediately suppressor-ready. Yes, I ordered one and am in discussion with a local silencer shop with some surprising recommendations being issued. More later on that :)

Expected delivery had been end of year, but it looks like mid Jan now. Saying that : it's worth noting that TROS is a small, private shop and is notorious for slipping lead times. There is no doubt Mark is a stand-up guy and will deliver. But don't be surprised if you order one of these and the delivery date gets pushed back......more than once (with no real notification provided.) If prepaying and waiting for an unspecified happy day when your barrel arrives is a problem for you, please ignore this post and choose another barrel option. Those of you who might be as crazy as I am, well, this post was for you.

I f@#$ing HATE Glock finger grooves. I bought one of those when they AIM them earlier this year. Mine came with an NY1 trigger spring, so i had to replace that with the standard spring, and the night sights were dead and got replaced. It shoots great, but the polymer was cracked at the bottom of the magwell. It's only a matter of time before that little chunk breaks off.

Finger grooves are relatively easy to remove. But if you don't stipple over that surface then it's a little tough to refinish.

How bad is it? You might be able to plastic weld it or just add minimalist magwell cuts to remove the crack altogether.

I have considered taking some sandpaper to them, and trying my hand at undercutting the trigger guard at bit as well. But, i've never attempted any sort of work with polymer like that. It would be a costly mistake if i screwed the pooch. I'd imagine the entire front strap would need to be sanded smooth, and not just the finger groove nubs, in order to have a consistent finish when stippled.

Yeah, that's going to pop out sometime.

This gun is on the bench in front of me now. I did the magwell cuts with an exacto knife and some hand files. You might be able to do something similar; eliminating the problem and giving yourself greater ability to strip mags without adding aftermarket baseplates for more grip.

That looks good. If i do something like that, it'll be very front-biased in it's position though, as that crack starts just about where the magwell starts to curve toward the front strap. But, it's already cracked, so what have i really got to lose buy experimenting a bit. I may even be able to blend it with the half-moon cut at the bottom of the front strap/front of the magwell.

You could just get a belt sander running at VERY low RPM and sand the whole bottom of the magwell on a slight angle, leaving the back mostly untouched but the front removed just enough to eliminate the crack. That'd get you even on both sides of the magwell too. Just make sure you don't overdo it.

It doesn't look like you'd need to do much to fix it.

I decided to play around with removing the crack on my grip today. I decided on a shallow "V" shape for the new contour based on the size and shape of the chunk of polymer that was cracked. I took my time, and used an Exacto knife and some small needle files. Overall, i'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

If your goal is small and light, keep saving for the Aimpoint micro. If you don't mind a bit larger, heavier optic, i wouldn't hesitate pulling the trigger on a PRO. My only complaint with the PRO is that I find the QRP mounts a bit clunky, but they're not bad mounts. I'm waiting for a couple Midwest Industries QD bases to arrive to try out on a couple of my PROs. I've got a PA micro as well, and like it quite a bit. It's taken a lot of abuse. But, definitely not on the same level as an Aimpoint.

Stellar man! Excellent work. If you take a careful approach to the undercut like you did that magwell cut then I think you'll be fine.
If you do it then be sure to post results (or questions) in the grip stippling thread. That's probably the best place to discuss frame mods.

it is... basically makes subsonic 300BLK plinking a reality. When I was using 208Amax loads they were double the cost per round and harder to justify blasting a couple hundred per range session. I may load up a couple thou and use them in a carbine class next summer (if they let me)

Color me impressed with Shooters Pro Shop. I ordered some of those 190gr Noslers at 2200 local Tuesday night and they were on my doorstep at 1300 local Thursday afternoon. And the bullets are beautiful. Now I just need to find some powder and get my reloading gear set-up. Thanks again for the heads up on this, Jim.

It just so happens that I was able to score a couple pounds of Reloader 7 not too long ago. Looks like I'm in business! [:D]

good deal! I'm sure I posted in the reloading section, but I found 11.6g of Reloader7 with a COAL of 2.215" cycled 100% of the time, locked back the bolt on last round, was stable in flight, gave me my goal of 1000fps and best yet, was MUCH cleaner than A1680. I have some other loads I could share if needed too, just know they are what work in MY gun (standard disclaimer...) there are some goo dthreads in the reloading area to read up on [:D]

shows backordered in mine too... dunno if that is MY order, or their stock at this moment. I may hit the local store and see if they have one. They're good about price matching their own sales (others, not so much)
Just got the call today that the item's no longer in production, and they offered me a Diamondback HP for $180. The PST was way too much scope for my hunting rifle, as I don't shoot out much past 300 yards.

I like it a lot. It is a nice weight and it balances well. I only ran 20 rounds through it after we built it. The LanTac dragon was pretty loud. I'm thinking about swapping it with my Fossa 556. (Picture below) the Lantac BMD is another option. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160117/b79401a6d5d1ec86b33e3cda44f2a141.jpg I'll shoot it more when the sights come in. I'm also going to get to try out the T&E Primary Arms 2.5x. Looking forward to that. My instructor friend is going to give me free lessons. He is a highly regarded instructor in Texas. He helped me build it. :)

They do look pretty beat to shit. I'm not above buying used gear, but those look used up. I took a pass, especially if they can be found for $50 more in like new condition.

Aimpoint ACO $293 (http://www.cmcgov.com/store/pc/Aimpoint-ACO-Aimpoint-AR-Carbine-Optic-6p35372.htm) at CMC Government Supply. Their shipping is brutal though, $18 for me. [wow]

Not defending shipping costs, but at the same time, shipping costs have risen tremendously. I ship a lot of stuff on my own dime, and the cost of a Large Flat Rate Box, even when printing the label yourself is $18.30 now. It used to be $12.95.

I just shipped Cotton68's Vise in a large flat rate, and due to weight, that's about one of the few times I felt like I got over USPS on the shipping.

I don't ship a lot of packages, but I do so enough to be in touch with relative costs, as it's always on my dime when I do ship. I sent a package USPS Priority using the self service kiosk in a non-flat rate box large enough to ship two ACOs in their factory packaging, and it definitely weighed more than a couple red dot optics. It was less than $8. First Class or Parcel Post would've been even cheaper. Shipping a vice, I'd say you got your money's worth. I've found that the flat rate boxes aren't always the best value and I usually ship by weight. Shipping costs may have gone up, but there are a lot of companies that flat out screw their customers on shipping costs, especially when shipping small, lightweight items.

You got that right. It's almost doubled by weight for freight items too. I was thinking when you offered that vise it might be cheaper to buy local than ship it.

Some companies sell so cheap if they are not drop shipping just packing materials could eat up most of the profits on small items.

I heard that USPS's rates just went up this year.

Best part ... is when you want to buy a small item ... and the cost of shipping costs more than the item [bash]

That's what gets me. A company charge $9.95 for first class USPS when actual costs, including packing materials (such as a padded envelope) are only $4.

well, that sucks. Forgot all about this, looked at my order and it just says 'cancelled'. No call, no email, just cancelled. Had to get on live chat and ask - Vortex not taking backorders was their reason. Got offered the same Diamondback. My opinion is there is no such thing a 'too much scope' as I've had a hunt totally buggered by a lower end scope. Never again...

It looks like Vortex just dropped the reticle, the MOA reticle is still available, I should have tried to deal for that one.
I compared that to Cabela's (Meopta) and picked that up instead. Gathers more light, and has everything I needed. My Nikon Buckmaster went foggy last hunt, and I had to go to my open sights for the hunt. Now that I've got a good scope, I'll invest in better open sights as I don't like these plastic ones.

SwissyJim
26 January 2016, 08:27
I tried for the MOA reticle but no go. Did you compare the Cabela's scope to the PST or the Diamondback? I have a Diamondback on my 10/22- it's good on that, but would not do for my .338. I have a PST on my .308AR and love it, but it's a 4x16 which is more than I want hunting (my 308AR is a bench gun)

I had a scope totally and completely ice up the internals chasing caribou years ago... sealed and fog free my ass! 'Course, could be the fact it was -30°f but still. The rings on that one had no opening for iron sights which has been changed since.
