What brand/type of earmuffs should I purchase? I know there are many to choose from with different price ranges but I want to be able to hear when I'm 60. So with that in mind and price doenst matter what is your preference?

Thanks

Im cheap, but I also want to hear when Im 60. Everyone in my Family is/was hard of hearing. So I do what I can do to preserve mine.

I wear these:

AND then on top of that, I wear:

Both equal less than 45 bucks online.

MSA Sordin Supreme Pro Neckband is what I am using. They are not cheap but they have not failed me. I have had others in the $80-100 range, and they are all broken.

Plus the comfort and sound quality is Awesome. I have the neck band model:

I use the same model and I highly recommend it. The only issu I have had is I can't seem to find the gel cups for this particular model.

They are not active/amplified but I've been satisfied with the Altus Pro Ears 33. Good protection at a reasonable price.

I've got a set of Howard Leight's with the similar low-profile design, electronic, and about $50.00. I recommend a low-profile version if you do much shotgun or rifle shooting. You'll get, and maintain, a better cheek and stock weld that way...

Best regards,

I have been very happy with my Peltor Comtac IIs the noise amplification and reduction is excellent and they are comfortable to wear. Battery compartment was a bit of a pain though to secure at first when they were new though.

I am on my second pair of Peltor Tactical 6-S's and this is the second pair I've needed to send back for repairs. The battery replacement is a serious pain in the ass as well. They are cheaply priced and when they work they are great. But I am less then impressed that two pairs results in two pairs being returned for repairs! Spend the money and buy the MSA's

The price point on the Howard Leights is great. I have a pair that I enjoy using. Once you go amplified, you wont go back.

One problem though, I'm not sure why (and it's not dead batteries), but the Impact Howard Leights electronics just quit on my one day. They lived in my range bag and I used them often as a line coach so I tried to take care of them. I may be the odd duck. They didn't have the highest level of protection (22-24ish I think), but they were comfortable and I can't complain about the price.

Next go around though, I'll probably be going with a set that reduces sound rather than simply cutting out the audio when sounds reach dangerous levels.

I have Howard Leight "Leightning" muffs. They have a full 31 db reduction, the highest I've seen. Always check the db rating. Some are less than you might think. Bill T.

The Howard Leight Impact Sports were OK, but I didn't realize how bad they were until I got a pair of the Supreme Pro-X with gel seals. I was forced to do that when my second pair of Impact Sports went TU after 1.5 years. Ultimately, I was able to salvage one working pair by cannibalizing parts from one for the other. I was shocked at the lack of insulation, but probably shouldn't have been. Corners had to be cut to hit that $50 price point.

Try SRS Tactical. They sell Sordin parts and replacement "hygein gels".

Howard Leights. Used and abused and they're still rockin. When(or if) they do finally go I'll buy another pair.

Sonic Defender EP 7's under Howard Leight Muffs. I really didn't start doubling protection until I got into shooting big bore handguns and TC Contenders. First started using the "free" hearing protectors (the little yellow things you squeeze, they gave away at the base), under Muffs. Been the same since, not fancy but very, very effective.

As an aside, if helping someone new to shooting, I set them up like this. I found that nearly every time, that I could prevent someone from forming one, or getting rid of a flinch, in anticipation of the muzzle blast.

I have a pair of 3M Peltor Tactical 6s (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009363P/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00009363P&linkCode=as2&tag=reviews01f3-20) ear pro, went to them from the HL's. Seem to be of better stock.

I use the Howard Leight Impact Sport and love them. Great for the money but if you shoot at an indoor range a lot I would consider some foam plugs for underneath or if this is all the shooting you do go with something else. It seems that the indoor range confuses the sound shutoff and it reacts slower indoors than out. Just my experience.
