View Full Version : AR is finished - thank you CW!

I picked up a used AR earlier this year and decided that I wanted to make a few changes. I went with a flat top Bravo upper, a Midwest Industries BUIS, an YHM free-float lightweight quad rail, an OD Magpul MIAD grip, a Vortex flash hider and an EOTech XPS. As discussed elsewhere the OD CTR stock didn’t work out (was billed as a commercial buffer version but it wasn't) and I have another on order.

Overall I'm pleased with it and I think it will do everything I need it to do. Thank you to everyone at CW for your help and thanks to Stickman for answering my emails and crazy questions.

Good to see it all came together for you. How are you liking that Eotech so far?

Echoing Stick's question. I've been looking into that model of EOTech for a while now. ...I just wish somebody made a QD Mount for it...

EDIT: Seems that LaRue makes an Optic+Mount Combo for $550. Not a bad deal.

they do, but the mount isn't specific to that particular eotech model. It is their general eotech rail that has a second set of rails raised behind the optic, which is to allow for perfect lineup for their magnifier mount. looks like it works well.

Sorry I didn't see this post, I was out of town visiting my family.

So far I'm very impressed with the XPS; I wasn't sure if it would be the best choice (EOTech sights in general) but I had so many people that I trust tell me it was the way to go that I figured I would give it a try.

I like the fact that it has a small footprint and that it only takes one battery. I would like to go with a QD mount at some point but that will be down the road. I haven't had a lot of range time with it yet but I plan on shooting it this weekend after our local IDPA match. I'll try to post a full follow-up next weekend.

Quick update....it only took me 2 months but I finally got the AR out to the range this afternoon. It ran great! Zero malfunctions and zero problems of any kind. I started out at 25 yards to sight in the scope and all I had to do was give it two clicks to the left and I was done. I took it out to 200 yards (fun to do with a zero magnification scope) and got all 20 rounds in the black.....

It has been a fun project and now I'm going to shoot the daylights out of it and have some fun.

Thanks once again,
Steve

PS I put rail covers on it since the last pics..... :)

Nice going S391! Nice blaster you have there. Where do you plan on taking it now? Or are you looking @ building a second? R.K.

I plan on taking it to the range.... often ;) I think I'm done with it. I built it for general shooting and to use when our local IDPA club has an AR side match. I have to admit that I had a ton of fun shooting the thing.... it was nice to finally get it out on the range. It felt "tighter" than it did when I first got it / before the rebuild.

The one big surprise was how much I liked the various bits of Magpul gear: the MIAD grip offered a nice, sticky grip that filled my hand and the CTR stock was some of the best money I've ever spent. On a related note I wasn't 100% sold on the EOTech sight but now that I've had a chance to use it I am really glad I went with it. It was easy to use, offered a great sight picture and was downright stone cold simple to set up and use.

All in all the weakest link was the guy pulling the trigger. I would like to get a .22 conversion so that I can let me boys shoot it and I may take a run at building a 9mm carbine but I'm in no huge rush. I'm joining a club less than 2 miles from my house so I'm going to have some fun shooting it and see what happens.

EDIT: if I do change anything on the gun I'm going to go with an ARMS folding front sight / gas block set up. The standard front sight worked great but I really don't like staring at it when I'm shooting through the optic (I know, the current craze is to co-witness but I'm just a guy shooting at the range for fun so I think I'll be ok :) ).

I really need to send a big Thank You to Stickman, he answered a lot of questions that I had and was a big help as I navigated the waters of my first AR build / rebuild.

Very nice build! Thanks for the info on the XPS.

And here a few final shots of the finished product. I installed the XS tritium front sight blade this evening and added the rail covers.....

For the record I think Magpul products are the best value on the planet! I LOVE their stuff. It works.

Thanks once again for all the help.
