Noob MG question

Alright, since I really suck at legalese, I'll ask somebody else.
If one wished to manufacture a drop-in kit to enable automatic fire (selectable), what sort of licenses would they need?
I understand that there is all sorts of noise around NFA gear that just doesn't happen with "regular" weapons, but the details are still elusive.

Is this something I would be able to churn out in my shop, or would I require a dedicated industrial location? I intend to manufacture some components and custom bits that aren't regulated in any way, and that should be a good start. Mostly, I am curious about the real money and paperwork investment. Is it worth doing vs. making whole non-nfa firearms? Would adaptor kits be tranferrable? This all confuses me very much.

The condensed version is that anything you made now would be illegal, the exception would be if you picked up the special licensing from the Feds to become a weapons manufacturer.

That's about my understanding of things. The beauty of computer design is that one can stack up models and part layouts until whatever paperwork is done.

Its a very limited market since FA items that are currently produced are going to be for the LE or MIL market only. The major players already have the market pretty well cornered on this.
