Send it to ADCO. They are cheap and fast and do a great job.

guys
just a think...
i compared the flash hider mounted with a vortex i have here...
the area where the barrel is threaded is the area marked in blue ( i measued it the internal with a caliper)
so,
compared with the mouned flash hider...
if there is a pin welded...it could be only in the red area...
or not?

I would email them (Olympic Arms) and ask if they "pin" their flash hiders on. If that's the case I believe (if you/gunsmith are careful) you can drill the pin out after locating it/them. The flash hider is normally damaged beyond repair, and you may have to cut the barrel and re-thread.

I deployed to Germany a couple times and saw that the Germans can enjoy short barreled rifles and suppressors w/out having to do the paperwork we need to. For that, I'm envious. Especially after seeing the HK G36C's and Sig 552C's available for purchase for 1200-1600 Euros.

Good luck and be sure to post some pics afterwards.

It is pinned and welded, its not going to come off very easy. You can make cuts, find the welds, and remove the pin if you want.

It's only comparatively easy for registered hunters, but still paperwork (you US guys stationed over here have it a lot easier due to an agreement that lets you get the hunting permit by taking a relatively short class compared to about a year if you do it as a German the regular way).

Silencers are not banned but hard to get as you have to explain why you need to have one. Basically they are out of reach for 99% of gun owners unfortunately.

Military style "SBR"s are not available to sportive shooters*, only to hunters (don't ask for the sense of this regulation...) and there are no converted military weapons allowed by law, even parts of "weapons of war", i.e. bolts and barrels are illegal to own and put to use in a civilian gun when they are from a military production line. So the civilian versions need to have different barrels and different bolts which raises cost and narrows assortment and choices.

So there are no G36C available in Germany and no genuine SIG 55x. There are some civilian SIG clones with match barrels in the price range around 2.000+ Euro / 3,000+ Dollars...

http://www.sg550.de/Preisliste_SG_2009.pdf

To get a G36 we have to do the same hackjobs converting SL8s as you do.
But due to HKs sale policy it's even easier to get some G36 parts in the US instead of the homeland of this weapon.

HK, because you suck and we hate you.

Just for you to get the feel of how much they like us: The HK MR223 I had in my hands today had a price tag of 2.798 Euros, that's about 3,900 bucks - for a rifle without flash suppressor and without any sights (those add another 500 $). And Americans whine about 3,000 $ ACRs. [pop]
http://www.frankonia.de/297452/189815/productdetail.html

My new Glock 17 I ordered today is very cheap for german standards but still has a price tag of 580 Euros (800+ $). I get watery eyes when I visit some of my buddys to get some range time with them and have a look at the K-Town Rod & Gun Glub shop offering Glocks with price tags around the 400 $ range... [adore]

So, no general Happy Land here either, although the situation improved noticeably after 2003. Before that we had something similar to your late (or upcoming?) assault weapons ban (the shape of the SL8 was a result of this legislation, also the grey color as black was consideres an "evil feature"). 2003 they abolished that paragraph but a year later they reintroduced it for sportive shooters (the majority in Germany interested in this type of guns) through the back door.

*Currently you can have military style assault rifles as long as they have at least 16,75" (42 cm to be correct) barrels and a caliber with a case length over 40 mm (supposed to make all those AKs unobtainable, so now we have .223-AKs - good job, legislators, really...). As said before, hunters are still able to purchase such rifles but hardly can put them to use as those are unwanted in their very traditional community. So theese are mainly safe queens and only see sporadic range use (most hunting ranges don't allow these guns and legally you are not allowed to use these guns in competitions and training as a sportive shooter).

Getting accredited as an collector or an assessor, next to obtaining very rare carry permits for running a security company are the last options to get a permit to own a gun. All these options are very hard to realize and very costly but round up the options and bases for gun ownership in good 'ol Germany.

So, no paradise here, but at least a reasonable working basis that is developing technicially to the positive against unfavourable political headwinds (we had a couple of school shootings and some legal gun owners going postal... [BD]). Right now as the result of the last elections I don't expect any changes for the worse for a while, at least...

...and now it's ITAR and the US state department that makes getting cool stuff to add to your guns difficult. :P

Well, I'll roll over now and cry myself to sleep.... [:D]

I missed that. If you are careful, you can do it yourself with a dremel type tool. From looking at the pictures, you can see where the pin is and welded
http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/3845/p1050164.jpg

You just have to start dremeling the area of the weld until you see the pin and remove it. Once the pin is removed, you just unthread the flash hider. The flash hider will be destroyed no matter how you take it off.

i quote Mike
here in italy we have similar laws..
and similar prices...damn....
i payd this my used k3b 2000 euro so 2800$...
a bit...expensive...compared with US prices..

but i payd my glock 19 460 euro....lol
very cheaper...
here in italy short barrel rifle are not permitted
so i have to remove this flash hider.. change gas port and buy another 5.5" flash hider to be right with law..
or put another short comp. but i cannot use the rifle outside my house..
so is a nonsense...

btw
Paulo
the bright area u are looking in the pic was a try to find the pin...
but it seem there is not a pin there.....

but i measured with a caliper the inside of the flash hider
the barrel finit at the second ring on the flash hider
then there is another internal ring at the flash hiderr that finish 0,4 inches after the ring as show in the pic

guys
is possible that the pin is in the position number 2 so it pass near the barrel thread and not like the #1.. on top of the thread...

it explains why the hole is at 2 o'clock and not at 12 o'clock...

I've done two barrels like this. On both, I made multiple cuts, and then twisted with a large flathead screwdriver. This allowed me to pop it off rather than to try and unscrew it.

Take your time, go very slowly. If you can, cut the FS down so it is much shorter (without cutting into the barrel). Then when you make your cuts down the length, it becomes much easier to get it off.

Great job.

For future reference: The blind pins are in the #2 position as you already discovered. It is the only way to really do it.

the pin is at 2 o'clock
but it is not in vertical position as i supposed...
it in put in orizzontal
as showed by the red line
