Those are great pistols. I've owned the M&P 45 and think it's one of the best polymer framed pistols out there right now in terms of simplicity, ease of use, and reliability. Mine was also very accurate. Plus you get the bonuses of S&W customer service and having it made in the US.

It's my favorite hand gun. Good size. M&P40 holds 15 rounds. More shooting, less reloading. Variable grip sizes. Ambidextrous. Minimal recoil. Mine was VERY accurate. I shot better (faster and more accurately) with it than I did with a Glock 17 and 19. Uses standard 1913 rails. Operates very much like a Glock if you don't opt for the thumb safety. Very high quality straight out of the box. I could not have been happier.

I love my M&P 9. I have several thousand rounds through mine and I remember 1 failure to feed on the 2nd magazine (probably operator induced)! It is light and comfortable to carry, especially with the Raven Concealment Phantom holster. The only thing I may change is to add night sights.

Love my M&P .45. There's a new drop in sear from Apex Tactical (http://www.apextactical.com/hp_zencart/) that drops trigger pull to a crisp 4lbs too.

I've has the .40 for three years now, put close to 2500 rounds through it with no failures whatsoever. Capable of good accuracy and presicion, and if you're a lefty like myself its ambidexterous.

It's a great choice for people who have a feeling that a glock could grow on them, but want something with more 1911-like manners.
I haven't heard of a single person who didn't like the M&P even more after installing the ApexTactical kits or components. My only complaint with the stock M&P9 triggers was the reset - long, chunky - the new sear and striker block should make a huge difference there.

PetersCustom makes a great Kydex holster, RCS obviously makes great stuff (just a bit backed up at the moment).

Our depart issues the M&P 40, plenty of trigger time on the 40. We are in the process of authorizing the M&P 45 as an optional duty pistol. One of firearms instructor loves his, waiting my turn to see what I think, right now using the HK45 and my Glock 22 gen4.

My personal standard for fit and natural point has always been the Firestar series from Spain. The M&P compact was the first gun to replace these as an EDC. Grip angle is spot on, and the trigger is acceptable for carry. I might have been happier with a bit wider front strap on the 9/40 variants. I found a lower front sight and a slip-on grip put decent groups exactly where expected. Reliability has been 100% with all ammo, so no problems there.
The magazine catch is accesible, but not prone to accidental release, in my experience. Swapping mag button to the opposite side is easy, and ambi slide release is kind of nice as well.
Magazine safety on non-LE models is a real turd move on behalf of the company, but fixed easily enough. Night sights only for LE, another poor political choice, IMO; typical of Smith & Wesson. Install yourself for $100 more than it would cost from the factory.
Storm Lake Barrels (http://www.stormlakebarrel.com/barrels) makes extended, threaded, and ported barrels for these pistols, though others may as well.
XS Sights (http://www.xssights.com/store/swmp.html) makes express tritium sights, if you want other than standard dots.

I love my M&P9 I have not had any problems with it, or jams whatsoever, but my wife jammed it limp wristing it, but she jams glocks also, lol. Military can buy at LE pricing at budspolicesupply. com they have the M&P pistols and rifles, its a good discount.

My M&P 45 has been perfectly reliable for the first 1000 rounds. Horrible trigger for the first 500 rounds. Tried the APEX before they made the dedicated 45 sear, and that didn't work out at all. OEM trigger finally became acceptable.

My personal standard for fit and natural point has always been the Firestar series from Spain.

I don't see much mention of the Firestar - of course Star is long gone AFAIK. I carried a Firestar M43 9mm pistol for ~15 years. Mine has somewhere around 5,000 rounds and wide variety of ammo through it without so much as a single hiccup. I recently retired it as my CCW for a Kel-Tec PF-9 (close to 1,000 rounds so far and zero failures). The ergos of the Firestar are nice for a compact auto and it's always been fun to shoot. The PF-9 is utilitarian - comfortable to carry and easy enough to shoot quickly and accurately at SD distances. My wife has claimed my Firestar as hers - it's her favorite range gun.

I have a few Smith & Wesson's but only very recently acquired a M&P pistol - a full sized 9mm. It's the first striker-fired pistol I enjoy shooting and its ergos are perhaps the best of any handgun I've handled to date (subjective, of course). This pistol is going to be my new bedside HD gun once I break it in and it has proven itself reliable. I have the Apex DCAEK kit and I'll be installing it once I've put 500 rounds through it and I'm sure there are no issues for which the pistol would have to be sent to S&W for resolution. I actually like the stock trigger enough that I could leave it alone and be happy with the pistol. This said who doesn't like a better trigger? If the Apex kit is as good as most indicate It'll have been with the time and expeniture. I added a new Streamlight TLR-1 tac light (the strobe function is nice), a CTC LaserGrip, and a few more factory mags with Arredondo +6 round mag extenders. I'm quite happy with the stock 3-dot low profile Novak sights and the stock texturing so, aside from the Apex kit installation, my M&P-9 is a break-in away from complete. This could become my favorite range pistol - very enjoyable to shoot!

The M&P .45 is our duty handgun and everyone in mh depertment likes it better than our previous duty gun, which was a S&W clunker (can't remember the model). I went to the Armorer School over a year ago and I'm really impressed with the gun. The only thing that I don't like is that it only holds 10 rounds on the .45. For me, the stock trigger is good enough the way it is.

I'm cool with the 10 rounds. I mean... a reliable 10 round 45 beats the hell out of a finicky 8 round 1911 any day of the week. My pistol is my carry gun now.

I'm a Glock owner and see no reason to change.

Never having fired an M&P 9mm before, I used my friends gun in USPSA Production and took second place in class.

IF I were looking for a plastic gun today, I would seriously consider an M&P.

The gun fit well and pointed well. You won't go wrong if you chose one.

I'm thinking more and more the long slide 9mm one may be my next pistol purchase.

I gotta say, after years of carrying and qualifying with my good ol' P229 .40, I was looking for something that was a little cheaper to shoot in courses and 3-gun. A game gun. Never cared for the Glocks (no offense meant), never had an opportunity to shoot an M&P, but I bought a 9L just to see if I'd like it. Never been a polymer frame guy and I was fully prepared not to like the gun. First trip to the range, I felt justified in my suspicion as I noticed I was pulling shots to the right and shot it fairly poorly. I figured "in for a penny..." and installed a DCAEK. Holy schnickies....I was shocked at how well I could knock those plates down. I'm still suspicious of the construction, but I don't think I've ever shot a handgun consistently as well as I shoot this thing now.

What rusting problem?

Wondering Beard
13 October 2010, 08:29
Some of the early pistols could easily accumulate a "light rust coating" on the slide in more humid conditions but that was around the time of their introduction.

I saw a couple of those myself and their trigger pulls weren't good either.

Those problems are gone now as far as I know.

yep...they have a recall on them, but our dept. is not going to send any back to get retreated so i guess we are stuck with them. it's a pain in the ass too. i keep my weapon clean and it still gets rust on the slide.

If I weren't so heavily invested in the Glock, and needed/wanted a new pistol tomorrow, I'd take a look at the M&P.
