Can you guess the cause of the damage to these firing pins?

Pierced primers?

Excessive protrusion causing pierced primers.

Piercing corrosive primers would be my guess...

I am also wondering what is the cause of that too, have a couple of firing pins with that kind of deformation.

I too would guess pierced primers from excessive firing pin protrusion, though I might also like to see the corresponding bolt faces to see if there is/was any other evidence of this.

How about fouling that prevented the firing pin from resetting fully into the bolt during cycling (i.e. likely slamfire scenario)?

I’ll jump on the “pierced primer” bandwagon.

As the firing pin pierces the primer, a jet of hot combustion gas hits the tip of the firing pin. This hot jet of gas eventually bores its way into the tip of the firing pin.

Thanks for the reminder Eric. I forgot to finish this thread.

While we believe pierced primers are the primary cause, a few sources have reported that their firing pins are dimpled yet no evidence exists that any primers were pierced. We were not able to find this phenomenon occurring with firing pins on another platforms. The manufacturing process, more specifically the lack of proper manufacturing, including hardening and chroming may be at the root of the problem.
