So I know Choate makes one, but I've seen much grumbling and mediocre opinions about it, and it isn't quite what I'm looking for; and the email address attached to any mention of the NOB has not sent a response since I sent one out to him over two weeks ago.
What, if any, other options are out there?

m24shooter

If you can ever get in touch with Craig, I would recommend the NOB. But he's been hard to get in touch with.
The Mossberg enlarged handle should be becomming available at some point, and looks like it might be decent. It has not been released yet however.

Yeah... it's like everybody makes cool big knobs for everything except the Mossberg... it's not like there's no market either. Frustration of frustrations.

What is wrong with the Choate handle? I recently ordered and installed one so would like to know what to expect.

Thanks

I'm just not a fan of the shape more than anything else. It's more of a paddle than a knob, and just doesn't seem to lend itself to as many manipulation options as an over-sized cylinder like the Nordic and GG&G options for the Remingtons and Benellis.

Jim1973
29 March 2010, 13:36
ok, as long as there wasn't something structurally/Mechanically wrong with it. I will be giving the Choate a full function test this weekend, if I don't prefer it I will find a replacement.

Thanks

It is rather large and oddly shaped. Some people love them, some don't. I dont' know but I have heard that it causes some real estate disputes with some optic mountings due to its size and vertical positioning.

Yeah, I have heard that quite a few of the oversized handles will not work well with Eotechs.

I have been trying to get a hold of Craig for about 2 months now without success. I'm about ready to break down and have a machine shop buddy cut out something just like it... If I go that route, does anyone else want to get on board and spread the cost around? I've been told that heat treat is the expensive part ($65 for 1 or 1,000 - you pay for a tray, not quantity), but it ought to be a pretty low cost option if we split it a few ways. I really wish Craig would start turning out e-mails to save the trouble...

New pictures from Mossberg show a different style handle that is similar to the NOB, but it seems the Mossberg reps are unaware of it. This doesn't surprise me - I spoke with their customer service a few times this week on another 930-related issue, and I'm almost convinced they just farm the service out to a call center. The 3 reps I spoke with all seemed pretty clueless...

3 firing sessions using the choate handle and so far I like it. The stock one was not all that bad except when I was wearing gloves I felt the need to visually check that I was grabbing the handle. With the Choate, there is no question I am grabbing it.

Still want to try it out with whatever new sling I get , but I don't think it will matter much. I don't expect to use an Eotech so this may be a mute point for me.

Like everything else, everyone should find what works for them :)

Sorry guys, I ran into a road block with having to return my gun to Mossberg. Now that everything is back in hand, I'm going to mail the factory charging handle to my buddy tomorrow and should have something to report back soon...

There is a new player that is offering a 930 handle. It looks good, and when mine gets here I will be including it in my review. I don't know how good it is yet, but I'll pass the word on.

Nordic Components is apparently gearing up to produce one as well (http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=390&t=186954). (Thread over at ARFCOM, scroll down a bit) No picture, but I'd imagine it'll look like the ones they make for the Remy and Benelli (http://shop.nordiccomp.com/NC-Speed-Bolt-Operating-Handle-BOH.htm).

I just found the Elite Tactical Advantage one today... What do you guys think? Is it worth pursuing a "NOB clone", or should we all just stand-by for the ETA review and the NC product to be released? My interest in this was fueled by the lack of options, but if other vendors are stepping up to fill the void, I might not want to waste the time on my friend's machine...

Optimus Prime
22 April 2010, 18:59
If you and your buddy can crank some out for less than the other guys are charging, that would be pretty cool. I'm not familiar with the manufacturing costs and stuff with this kind of thing though, so I'd have no idea if that's even possible.

That was a big part of why I went with Craig's NOB. I should have the ETA model soon, and I'll start posting pics and get a review started as soon as it is here.

I received the Elite Tactical Advantage charging handle today - I'll report back after I get a chance to hit the range with it. My initial impression is that it is much smaller than I had hoped - roughly the same length as the factory unit. I think I would still prefer something like the NOB...

I ordered a bolt handle, and Mark called me later to ask if I would be interested in reviewing some of their other stuff. I said sure, so here's a look at some of the stuff I'll be working on.

I'm contemplating the safety... but I mean wow... how much rail do you really need?! Although I have seen mention somewhere else that the weight of the RIS alone cuts down significantly on recoil.

m24shooter
5 May 2010, 07:01
Well, I'll start by saying the rail isn't going to be for everybody. I think there's something like over 60" of useable rail on it.
I'm going to try it out with the understanding that not everybody buys or uses a shotgun for the same reason I do. For some, there will be a point in using it for others, none at all. It is an option that will be available on the market.
I'm hoping that I will have time to put it on this weekend and start messing around with it.

I couldn't wait, had $50 burning a hole in my wallet. A handle and a safety tang are inbound.

...and not to derail the thread but I see m24shooter is rockin' the aimpoint micro on the 930 now. How are you liking it, or will you be covering it in your review thread?

m24shooter
28 May 2010, 15:47
I like it. I think the Micro would go well with just about any shoulder-fired weapon. The problem is now I have to come up with more money to by another one. Then I'll probably decide I need another one for something else. It is far better than the Trijicon MRDS.
I will probably include it on at least some level.

Ok...I'm a huge fan of the Mossberg 930 and I think they really got it right this time! I'm glad to see that some new accessories are making their way out into the market too. Next, the Bulldozer...holy shit!!! 3.25 lbs!!!!! Damn! I love it! That thing makes a shotgun, which already looked pretty tough, look like a shotgun on steroids! I like! I think the amount of material is a bit overkill and it could most certainly be trimmed down a bit! How much actual stuff can one person realistically mount on a combat shotgun!?! Very cool though! I'm looking forward to your review.

m24shooter
30 June 2010, 18:01
There is a trimmed down version that will be coming out. It is called the Rhino. Basically a full length top rail, with side and bottom sections at the muzzle end.
Mark at ETA is developing some new things for the 930. I think some of them will be very well received. The Bulldozer is more about looks. At the same time, it does allow the user to pretty much put anything they want on it, and they can do it all at once if they want.

m24,

I'm very curious what your impressions will be of the ETA products. It doesn't seem like there are many manufacturers jumping on the 930 band wagon in terms of manufacturing some quality aftermarket products. It's a great shotgun that deserves some well thought out toys! Get that Bulldozer on there and lets get some feedback! It looks cool and I'm curious how the weight will make it feel. Balanced or front heavy!?! The ETA line of products show some promise so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

m24shooter
3 July 2010, 09:44
The safety and charging handle are very well done. I will expand on those when I do the 930 update. With Craig not doing the NOB anymore, the ETA handle is probably the next best option. Mossberg continues to drag its feet on their large bolt handle, and it is simply wider and completely round. The Choate version has that big square handle area that can interfere with some optic mounting. The safety is a little wider than the Vang, which I really liked to begin with. The contour of the safety almost makes it feel like it was custom made for me.
Currently there are a couple of manufacturers offering stuff that will work on 930s: ETA, Mesa, TacStar, Nordic, Gun Connection, and Choate. Vang, GG&G, SGT/Wilson make 500 and 590 stuff that will fit. Aimpro Tactical is making custom 930s and is bringing out a product line for the 930 series. I'm very excited to get some Aimpro stuff soon. They have already done one barrel for me, and I've got another barrel there getting some more work done and I'm hoping to have some of their other stuff to work over as well.
The 930 is catching on in the aftermarket, and the continued popularity of it (in spite of the QC and CS issues from Mossberg) is helping to widen it.

You're right. I totally forgot about it. And when I was carrying the four of them around to take the pics it is very easy to mistake the material based on just the weight. I'm going to use a dope scale at work tomorrow and see what they each weigh.

You did, and it looks like the Nordic body with the ETA texturing.
I called them right around the time they were supposed to be released, and a few weeks after. I got one response that they had no idea what I was talking about, one that said it wasn't released yet, and the last one was that it would be another few weeks. About par for Mossberg. I don't know if they have released it yet or not. It is part 19297.

ETA: I just checked with them. Hasn't been released, and I was given a date of mid-September. Of course, I was previously told June, then July, then August.
About what I've come to expect. I don't really care about this part, I think there are other better options already available without having to wait for Mossberg's "two more weeks/months/years" promises.
With Craig not producing the NOB anymore, I'd say go with the Nordic or ETA.

I got the new charging handle from Mossberg yesterday.

The handle portion is hollow so it isn't really heavy. It appears to be blued. I wish it had been parked instead. That would be my only beef.

It's big and grippy and is much easier to work with by hand or with gloves.
