So I'm contemplating a lightweight carbine build, primarily as a back-up if I ever go to a class and my main rifle goes down (Two is one and one is none and whatnot...)

I don't plan on dumping a lot of money on it if I go through with it, yet I still want something different enough from my other one, I figure trying to piece together a lightweight build. I kind of want to stick to a mid-length gas system, I like the increased reliability and the longer sight radius, but so far the only lightweight 16" middy barrels I've found are from RRA (Halfway down the page or so (http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=272).) Nothing against them, but I want to know what else is out there.

Anybody else know of some out there?

Check out Bravo, they got 16" middy DD Gov profile barrels for sale.

Posted before I was finished.....

I know they aren't "light weight" per-say, but I haven't seen many other ones like the RR "pencil" barrel.

The 1:7 twist may sway me towards the BCM... plus keeping money in state makes me feel a bit better (at least a little of it, since BCM's here in WI.) Any idea what the overall weight is on the DD barrel? And the RR for that matter...?

Centurion Arms (http://www.centurionarms.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_images.tpl&product_id=45&category_id=17&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=47)

I've been eyeing these for a while....pricy but worth it IMHO. Made by FN, light weight profile, cold hammer forged, thick chrome lining, tapered bore...

Reports of impressive performance from a light weight barrel from their owners.

Another excellent option is BCM as stated above

1:7 CL CHF Lightweight - DD, BCM, and Centurion are definitely the most attractive.

Rob_S might have the best idea on weight, but all of these are going to be pretty close. Choosing the rail will also play a large part in overall weight (stock handgurads, TROY/VTAC rails, or DD Lite). Various shops like G&R, BCUSA, GTS Tactical can assemble custom uppers with the barrel/rail/sight combination of your choice.

I have one of these (http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-16-Mid-Length-LIGHT-WEIGHT-Upper-Receiver-p/bcm-urg-mid-16lw.htm) in the safe right now with a set of RRA midlength handguards, a MOE grip and M4 stock, and an Aimpoint C3 in ADM mount. Total packag is about $1500+/- and IMHO is the best thing going in "beginner" ARs right now.
