Question on Barrel Diameter

Just out of curiosity, what is the purpose for the smaller diameter section on the AR's barrel an inch or two in front of the front site?

Well, I figured there was a legit reason for it. Thanks for the info! Don't really need a grenade launcher, as this is the HD gun, and I am in a very small home. But, if I win the lottery and get a huge house, will look into it.
