I couldn't decide if I should add this to the "Magazine Mania" or the "PMAG 40" Thread so I'll put this in it's own thread:

Recently a probably well known and loved company filed a patent describing a "Ammunition Magazine with Four Ammunition Stacks (http://www.scribd.com/doc/32699459/Pat-20100126053#fullscreen:on)".

Kind of reminds me of a AR15inized 6L31 AK magazine with a 60 round capacity (although technically it differs). Drawback of the AR format is the magwell, reducing total capacity when comparing same-length magazines using this techniqe.

I have to admit, a 60-round-no-reload-neccessary-capability is quite impressive:

Saw that over at The Firearm Blog (http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2010/06/08/magpuls-quad-stack-magazine/) and immediately decided I need a couple.

But they can't do 6.8 mags? What gives?

Doubles should work, triples almost certainly so.

I believe there's issues with the width of the round and the thickness of the plastic once you get up into the magwell (as in the rounds are bigger, and the plastic gets too thin...)

Will these be made in EMAG spec (as to work with the HK 416 IAR)... this question will be asked much, much later, but I promise it will be relevant.

I am pretty sure that one of the target markets for such a development will be the USMC that is looking for a high capacity magazine for it's M27 IAR, so most probably they will be compatible with weapons like the 416/IAR

http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/2009/11/marine_iar_112209w/

"The magazine would need to fit “the M16/M4/HK 416 family of weapons,” which includes the new 5.56mm auto-rifle SysCom is considering as a replacement for the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon in most fire teams [read IAR]"

IMHO magazines like the Beta C-Mag or the Armatac CL-Mag* are way to cumbersome to be practical for the intended purpose, so the way to go will be a rather "conventional" 50-60 round magazine. 100 rounds will be pretty heavy and a mag-change is very fast compared to a belt-change with a SAW.

No, I get it, it was just an impulsive frustration statement.....

Not going to be a problem.
