while cleaning my barrel the other day, I wished I had some sort of AR upper vice block purpose made for the job.

I have this ( http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=730930 ) for assembling uppers. I am thinking of buying another one, and cutting most of the plastic away that actually goes into the receiver. that way the upper is held only by the takedown and pivot pins. and I would have a nice stable platform for running a rod through my barrel. and it would work with a bore guide, as well.

the DPMS above is out of stock, so I may try this one ( http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=730930 ) as well.

is there already some product made for this, that I am not aware of?

What about the stands? I can't recall the name of the company, but there are polymer stands out there for cleaning and working on AR15s. The weapon locks in from the magwell.

You might try a stand from MCM Case Gard. You can see one in use in my following tutorial: http://www.weaponevolution.com/forum/showthread.php?1605-CLEANING-WITH-BREAK-FREE-BORE-CLEANING-FOAM

ETA: Here as well.....http://www.weaponevolution.com/forum/showthread.php?2060-AIMPOINT-INSTALLATION-ADM-AD-68H-MOUNT

shows a cleaning rod, bore guide, and now neutered upper receiver vice block. holds it is real secure like.

thanks to all who tried to help. sometimes I can't be.

Why not just put your barrel in the vice?

Hold by the pins, or flit it over, and it will hold it by the rail, perfect for cleaning

I attempted to reply to this, but it seems my post has not yet been approved.

I'm not clear why you'd use an upper receiver vise block instead of a mag well vise block. Those things are cheap and solid, easy to use. Add a Sinclair link and you don't even have to disassemble the rifle -- the whole thing is as stable as it would be with a cut-down Panther Claw, and of course you can still use Sinclair's bore guide .

Here's your huckleberry. Holds it by the pins, or flip it over, and it will hold it by the rail, best I've seen for cleaning.
