With some research i have learned that Recce is short for Reconnaissance.

What exactly is different between a Recce and a standard carbine length AR?

Thanks.

A Recce is basically an accurized carbine that is compact enough for close quarters but really shines as a medium-range precision rifle.

Main difference is the barrel, a Recce will have a stainless 1:8" twist barrel with a heavier profile - a standard M4 barrel is carbon steel with a 1:7" twist (you will see some commercial 1:9" twist barrels too).

The barrel on a Recce will also be free-floating, standard plastic M4 handguards do not free float the barrel.

If you are thinking about building one, give Wes over at MSTN a shout. He's built a few Recce uppers...

The term RECCE has morphed into a generic 16" barreled upper with a SS barrel and long free float rail. It works well as a general purpose carbine that can do most tasks fairly well, though none of them super well. For close in , duty, or home protection, there are better options.

The real difference was the barrel; a 16" stainless precision barrel in the Recce vs. a 14.5" chrome lined steel mil spec barrel in the M4. An optic was typically added to take advantage of the precision barrel.

Here are my interpretations of the M4 and Recce.

Sidenote: until the recce rifle, the term for reconnaissance (a French word meaning recognition btw) in the US was recon while recce was used in the UK.

Edited to ask: aside from the barrel, is there any difference, in terms of use and features, between the Recce and the typical squad marksman rifle (if that's the correct term)?

The Recce is a great all-purpose AR. If I were to have only one AR, I'd seriously consider a Recce AR. The only problem with an all-purpose AR isn't the AR, it is the optics. Sure, you can spend your whole life savings and get one of the new 1x8 scopes coming out, but I think the best option is to have multiple optics in QD mounts.

A great example of a Recce AR is a 16" Midlength barrel with a 12" handguard with front and rear flip-ups.

The older one is a Noveske barreled build from Denny's.

Here's my latest take on a RECCE build. I used a rigid profile barrel at 14.5 inches with the hope of cutting just a bit of weight and length. It is 1 in 8 twist with a mid-length gas system. The optic was an important decision for me too. I went with what I found to be the closest true 1 - 4x -- a Trijicon TR24G.

Here's my latest take on a RECCE build... (snip)

Very much like what I have in mind for a future build, even down to my preferred Phoenix FH. Very nice!

I actually built a recce without knowing what one was. Though I used a 16" middy bcm hammer forged barrel, instead of one of the SS variety.

Close enough for me, though.

I think that's actually a micor FS. Those Spike's components are sharp looking!

I think you're right - it looks just like my Phoenix, but shorter. I wonder who copied who?

Have you thought about an optic?

Well, I know the micor's slots are cut to match the twist rate of your barrel rifling, and it's also my understanding that there is a small shelf inside to help act as a break, so I'm not sure how much copying there actually was.
