So way back when I was first getting into firearms I bought myself a Marlin 795. I bought it because ammo was cheap and it came with a scope (oh how naive I was..). Well now that I have a couple black rifles I find myself unsure of what to do with my little ol 795. The super light weight of it has always been annoying to me. To remedy this I bought a wood stock for it: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=360227 which gave the rifle some weight and made offhand shooting a whole lot better. My issue now though is that the scope I have on it now is very cheap and I am torn. I have considered getting a set of tech sights ( http://www.tech-sights.com/marlin.htm ) and using the rifle for apple seed shoots/cheap training/new shooter instruction duty but I am also considering getting myself a nice scope. DIP makes a nice 3/8 dovetail mount I could use: http://www.diproductsinc.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=125157&CAT=3656 . That would at least open the door to a decent set of rings. I'd be willing to spend up to 150 on the scope. Primary use would be bench/offhand shooting at the range.

What would you do?

Since it is going to be used as a bench gun and some offhand shooting, I'd lean more towards the scope. I'd even consider shooting the cheap scop it came with until it craps out.

FWIW, I managed to pull Rifleman with just the cheap scope that came with mine. The techsights are very nice, though, and would be appropriate if you're trying to perfect your skills with irons.

How old are you and how good are your eyes? I got a 795 for my 16 y.o. daughter to shoot at an Appleseed. I;m 59 and iron sights just plain don't work for me anymore. I was shooting an AR-15 at these Sppleseeds and really like the AR platform, but the shoot was costing me almost $300 including ammo. So, I bought a used Tactical Solutions .22 cal. dedicated upper and coupled it with a Spikes lower, added a 3 X9X 40 scope and I've now got a real tack driver..............Although I could have bought 6 Marlins for what I've got invested in the new AR..........................Ed
