I'm looking for a way to mount a light on my bro's carbine w/M4 handguards and I came across this:

http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/4421/97992589.jpg

Reason why I like it, it's cheap and he already has an X300 for one of his pistols.

He's also not going to be leaving it on there all the time, and this mount comes off easily.

I'm a little concerned with how sturdy it is, looks like it only attaches at the bayo lug.

Anyone use one of these or know of something similar?

Has he considered simply mounting a section of rail to his HG's?

I thought about that, but he wants to keep it off the handguard and I can't say I blame him.

If there is no better option, that's what were going to do.

Well, there's always the FSB mounts such as....http://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=94

Carbine length handguards are too short for direct mounting a light. The MI FSB mount works well foe me.

I'm a relatively short guy. Never had a problem with a light on the HG's.

I used the rig shown below until I replaced the handguards with a rail.

Nice, that looks a lot stronger. He's already sold on it, I told him to order one.

Did you shave that FSB and have it refinished? It looks super clean.

check out the Mount-N-Slot products from IWC. I am very happy with the two products I have from them.

This too came to mind, but as stated above he's looking to stay off the HG.

IWC's TMC 1" LIGHT MOUNT-N-SLOT bolt directly to the top of the M4 Round Hand Guards, weigh and cost less that the set-up above and have less parts and bulk.

Just a suggestion and option. We also sell SureFire.

I like that.

That there is a nice looking piece, very clean and simple.

What if you were to install that on M4 handguards, would it put the light at a downward angle because of the handguard taper?

We have many customers using this on Mr / A2 HG's, with a taper. None have contacted us with an issue. When we designed this mount to work with M4 / A2 HG's, the beam spread is so big, it negates any effect of the taper.

It's been my experience with mounting rail sections on CAR and M4 HG's, that the angle actually places the light beam POI right on target at about 25M.

No, the FSB is original OLY from 1985 when I first assembled the carbine. Had an FFL back then and could order an "AR in a bag" direct from Olympic Arms (SGW Back then) for $459 with a stainless heavy match barrel. All you had to do was put it together. I "built" a couple dozen for sale - kept this one. No refinish work done on any part of this one, just some upgrades.

That is a good lookin' rifle, and I really need to get some 20-round PMAG's.

I saw that light mount and it looks nice but I wanted to get him something that would work with a light that he already owns.

I like that rifle, looks lightweight and simple.

Yeah I thought about that but since most of their parts mount on the top of the hand guard, to me they don't really take up any usable space on it. I can definitely see someone not wanting to mount things on the side of a carbine hand guard, but on top of it doesn't interfere. At least not nearly as much.
