The "crew" has landed, my first day at the 2011 SHOT went with a LOUD bang. Aimpoint along with numerous vendors set up a day of shooting and handling of their ware. I had the opportunity to handle, fire and play with Aimpoint devices, new weapon systems and assorted heavy metal gear.

LaRue Tactical provided support and fine food. The weapons platforms that were there ranged from semi auto pistols, full auto pistols, rifles of all calibers and of course the party favorites, crew serviced weapons. It was like a kid in the candy shop, you did not have enough time to run from the one end of the range to the other.

The attendees were from all walks of our community, current military-specops to your average GI Joe & Jane. Retired Vets, corporate/capitalist types, small business ventures, media, LEO and then of course there’s me, the kid in the candy store.

The range was owned and operated by Desert Sportsman’s Club, http://www.dsrpc.net/ . The owner Tom, was gracious and friendly. If you are in the need of a place to fire away, I encourage you take the time to head out there. It was a short trip from downtown Las Vegas. The range was vast and allowed shooters to fire various weapons. The staff were professional and helpful. The range sits between a beautiful mountain range, highway, state park and the urban creep of a growing city.

Perhaps one of the many funniest moments came when firing off some of the larger caliber weapons, this caused such a loud commotions that an entire neighborhood complained of the loud bands. Lesson learned here folks, if you want peace and quiet and the beauty of mother nature, don’t live next door to a shooting range used by civilians and the military.

The day ran long and hard on all. The rugged landscape was beautiful and physically challenging for some. A company called “tomcat” provided transportation if and when need. They hand a very cool off-road vehicle for any who needed a lift. More or less, visitors saw various monster trucks, vans and SUV of all sizes roam the range for logistical support.

I shot at the range with the Mil-spec Monkey crew. The “Monkey”, AKA Clayton Montgomery and the crew have had serious training from many high end trainers, Viking Tactical, Tactical Response and others. The Monkey is no slouch and neither are his crew, except for the new guy but we won’t mention his name at this time. If you’re into cool morale patches and t-shirts check out their website, http://milspecmonkey.com/

What did I get out of the experience? Fun and a lot of fun. I operated and fired new weapon systems that will be on the market. But most of all, I had the chance to meet the men and women of our country’s military services, the operators, the men and women who support our troops, and the companies who through relentless research, development and serious funding to provide those who go into harms way with a weapon platform to fight our nation’s enemies. As Gunny would say, “Get some”.
