One of the most anticipated AR rifles hitting the market later this year will be the civilian version of the HK 416 and 417, the HK AR 556 and 762. Often seen in pictures and talked about throughout the internet, I was finally able to put my hands on one at the SHOT. The HK AR was a nice piece of work, everything about it was solid, there was no wiggle room between the upper and lower, the 2 stage trigger felt crisp and the rear and front sights reminded me of my HK 53/33 issued to me back in my SWAT days.

The HK AR had a medium weight cold hammer forged 1X7 twist barrel as compared with another company who’s philosophy was a thin barrel profile ( I’ll talk about that later). For those who don’t know much about the HK AR, it’s a gas piston operated rifle vs. the direct impingement of the traditional Colt AR. In HK own word’s, “ The MR556A1 uses the HK proprietary gas piston operating system, employing a piston and a solid operating “pusher” rod in place of the gas tube normally found in AR15/M16/M4-style firearms.”

Another feature which drew my attention was the barrel of the HK 556. The HK barrel was not chrome lined like the barrels found on a Colt, BCM, or LMT. Again from HK own words, “But unlike the HK416, the MR556A1 does not use a chrome-lined barrel. Chrome-lining can sometimes mask bore imperfections and negatively affect accuracy. For the new series of Heckler & Koch semi-automatic MR rifles, HK designers and engineers believe best accuracy comes with an unlined bore.” HK also uses a four quadrant free floating rail system on the rifle, this allows the user to place any RDS, scope, light, VFG or anything to the upper without effecting the accuracy. The HK rail system can be installed and removed with simple tools and returns to zero when reinstalled.

The collapsible stock allows the shooter to have a solid cheek well, the rear rubber butt plate can be adjusted and removed as demonstrated by the staff. As well the stock can be locked into place. The HK AR will accept any AR type magazine. The safety/select lever is ambidextrous on both the HK 556 and 762. Both rifles are made of German components but are build here in the USA.

Needless to say, this is on my bucket list of things to do. The HK staff advised they are looking at a release date of mid to late summer. The cost of the HK AR will be above the average priced DI AR. Do I need this rifle if compared with any other AR rifle? It’s kind of like owning a BMW M3 or an Audi S5, it’s sure is fun and that German quality, once you have one well enough said.

Some pictures I took at the HK booth, rifles, pistols and sub-guns, and their 40mm grenade launcher. Some behind the scene of the video shot with the mil-spec crew.

A very compact HK416c, check out the butt stock. In the cool hands of a mil-spec crew operator.
