I am new to the forum, and just bought my first AR...which was the S&W PSX. I'm looking for sights, and have been told that the magpul ones can't be mounted to the gas block rail because it will melt them. Is this true? If so, I would like to get the Troy battle sights. The main rail and the gas block rail look to be the same height, so I don't think I need the front sight specifically designed for gas blocks. Any info you all could provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry...think I posted this in the wrong thread...newbie mistake

cbs2669,

Welcome!

You are correct, Magpul's MBUS2 (http://store.magpul.com/product/MAG247/45) Specs page states "NOTE: Cannot be mounted to a railed gas block due to excess heat issues. Front MBUS must be mounted to a railed fore end on the same plane as the receiver rail."

You can mount a metal sight, like the Troys you mentioned and essentially avoid the heat issue. Be aware though, that some sighting systems do not compensate for the difference in the visual plane for a gas block, so you may need to look for a specific version.

*Edit: I agree your model sure looks like it's on the same plane. It's certainly not the type of gas block that would require one of these (http://troyind.com/%20/battlesights/troy-battlesight-front-gas-block-mounting-m4).

That looks a lot like an Adams Arms gas block.

You need regular Troy flip-ups, if you buy a front sight that is intended for gas block mounting it will probably be too tall.

Thanks guys for the info.

I think I have decided on the regular Troy sights.

AR-10, you are right. The PSX uses the Adams Arms piston

One set in stock for $179:

If you don't mind an H&K style front sight, I found those for as low as $165.

Thanks for the info. Hadn't seen that site before. Cheaper than what I had found.
