View Full Version : Mini Red Dot as a Primary Optic?

I have a Dr Optic sitting around and was considering using it as my primary optic on one of my rifles. Does anyone have any experience doing this and how did you like it?

I'm Thinking a Aimpoint T1/H1 is probably a better way to go as the weight difference between the two is negligable and the Aimpoint being a more durable system but wanted to see if I could take advantage of something I have in my safe

What mounting options are out there for this type of set-up?

Thanks

The one problem with the Doc, JPoint, and the other Micro Red dots with the Auto Brightness is that they are not good at night. And when you turn the weaponlight on, the dot is nearly invisible. For daytime shooting, they are fine.

The newer Micro Red Dots that have a manual illumination adjustment are much better. I believe the Insight and Trijicon have that feature.

ADM and Larue make mounts.

I too have a MRD sitting around (Burris FastFire II) and was looking to make use of it. Only problem is finding a mount that gets it up high enough of the picatinny rail. I did some googling and found the following (old) article:

Only problem is that Larue doesn't seem to make the "IronDot" mount any longer. Two emails have gone unanswered. Didn't know about ADM or who that even is so will need to do some googling on that one.

Good luck! I'll post back if I find anything.

Thanks for the input. I called ADM about thier RMR mount and the REP I spoke with told me the mount was not compatible with with the Dr Optics. I may have to call LaRue to see if they have any of the Dr mounts left sitting around If I can't find anything else. I may start looking at other uses like on a target pistol if the mount search proves fruitless

Paulo Thanks for the heads up on the low-light consideration. This rifle will primarily be for daytime shooting but I kinda don't like imposining limitations on my gear.

If this is the "Dr Optic" you are referring to, it has the same base/mount as the Burris FastFire so in theory ADM's mount should work.

I have the MS01, doesn't have the notches in the shroud. I thought it would work too but called them to make sure but ADM told me no.

What mount is that on the pistol? Any special tools needed to install it?

I had purchased that mount when I thought I was going to put my Burris on my XDm -- low and behold before it arrived I sold the XDm and bought a M&P45 and now it's sitting in my safe.

The mount is from SpringerPrecision and they market it for XD/XDm and Glocks:

I would highly doubt that Dr would change the bases and mounting of their MRDs so I bet it would fit. Only special tool need to install the mount on a slide is a sight drifting tool. It replaces the rear sight by mounting into the dovetail groove.

15ICAM,

I don't plan to contact them. The ADM mount doesn't really do anything more than the standard picatinny mount my Burris came with. I was hoping to find something like the Larue IronDot mount which lifted it up higher and also gave it some protection.

I just don't see a reason to spend $75 for the ADM mount. My search continues. Now if Larue would only get back to me on that IronDot.....
