Like I mentioned in the PWS piston thread, I'm a big fan of "pistondriven" rifles.
That being said, when I went shopping for second semi-auto I went for a piston rifle. Living in Euroland and having always been a big fan of Swiss firearms I opted to get me a SG550.
Unfortunately has it been sort of a safequeen for quite some years, mainly because I got involved in the Lowlandsversion of 3-Gun and there's far more bling out there for an AR than there's for a SIG.
Anyway, a year ago I saw the light and started "improving" my SG550.
Attached is a pictorial of the SG550 in it's many guises over the past few years, all the way up to its most recent rendition.
It went from "plain jane" through "über-railed" back to something more "KISS".

Did I mention that it runs like Swiss clockwork [:D]

Charlie-2-6,

Always nice to hear from you, and as much as I hate to say it, I think the original is my favorite. There is something rather classic about it.

I'm a piston freak myself. If Sig had gone with something like that that accepted AR mags instead of the 556 configuration, they wouldn't be able to build them fast enough.

Thanks for the positive comments and all I can say is that piston operated rifles are in our genes overhere. Cleaning the SIG vs my AR is a breeze. The bolt needs a mere whipedown as compared to that of the AR. The only part that needs some "elbowgrease" is the head of the oprod and that is easily performed with what we tend to call a "nubucksponge" overhere.

And since a thread is useless without pics, here's some more

Some users claimthe SIG 550 is the worlds best assault rifle, but thats the users choice at the end of the day.

I wouldn't go to such lengths, but I'd pick a piston operated assault rifle over any direct gas impingement system if forced to make a choice. Doesn't have to be a SIG, could be a FNC too. Many, many moons ago an army bud and I did our own limited "torture tests" with our issued FNC's and they did come out just fine.
