View Full Version : LE6940 Barrel Extension

This is a barrel extension from an LE6940. Unlike the LE6920 which has the index pin pressed into the barrel extension, the LE6940 has a slot in the "collar" that indexes with a pin pressed into the upper receiver. This one has been parkerized prior to installation. The other major difference is that the barrel nut is threaded on the outside and screws into the upper receiver. I'll add a few more photos at a later date showing the entire barrel assembly.

Thanks for posting this Mark. I see a lot of chatter on the 6940 and I don't think some buyers know what they are getting themselves into.

We had to build a custom barrel nut wrench to service the 694X series of weapons. We get calls weekly from small shops wanting to buy one. That is until we tell them the price. Lets just say it is cheaper for someone to send their upper in for repair than to buy a wrench for a one time use.

Couldn't Colt just use standard ones?

How would you use a standard barrel nut with a monolithic rail?

Sorry. I was referring to the barrel extension. Can you use any barrel, or do you have to use a barrel with this type of barrel extension?

No worries, I missed you by a mile...

The bare barrel is the same as a 6920 or other AR-15 pattern barrel. Th extensions were necessary for custom builds. Previously, the only way to build a custom upper was to take the barrel extension off of an existing barrel assembly leaving the remaining barrel useless.

Thanks for the info. I have a Colt 6940. Now I know where to get a wrench if needed.

Disassembly of the barrel assembly on an LE6940 is easier said than done. Here are a couple of photos showing the various parts that compose the barrel assembly. The front sight base is particularly troublesome without the proper tools. We had to design and manufacture 3 special tools to disassemble and reassemble it.

Le6940 armorer's wrench and barrel nut wrenchs are avaliable from Brownell's or direct from Arrington Accuracy Works, and they're not that expensive.
