View Full Version : HSGI "Popper" Chest Rig.

The new HSGI Popper is a combination of a low profile chest rig with the new HSGI open top version of the UMP (Universal Magazine Pouch). The Popper comes with bungee cords magazine retention pouches, 2 hidden shotgun shell trays and a magazine dump pouch, along with loop velcro for patches on each side of the rifle mag pouches.

The "POPPER" has 2" non-padded shoulder straps with a single row of vertical MOLLE/PALS webbing and also a small unsecure pocket located directly behind the rifle magazine pouches. The Open Top UMP can hold 3 magazines each the same as the flapped version of the UMMP's and UMP used on other HSGI platforms.

The "POPPER's" hidden shotgun shell trays can store up to 6 shells each and can be used by simply grasping the D-ring and "POPPING" them downwards. The magazine dumper pouch folds up and also be deployed by grasping it's D-Ring and extracting it out of the hidden compartment.

The shotgun shell trays or dumper can be relocated in any position that the user desires within the 3 hidden compartments.

The "POPPER" is very lightweight weighing only 1lb.,10oz. empty. The "POPPER" is made out of 1000 Denier Cordura, sewn with 138 Bonded Nylon threads with the dumper made of 430 denier nylon.

Bare Popper.

Interesting idea, how secure are the shotgun shells when they are loaded and stuffed up inside?

I messed with them a bit and they are pretty secure. Especially with weight on the rig and it secured to your chest along with the hook and loop you get the pressure of the rig "sandwiching" them against you. Will they ever fall out? I am sure with hard use they will. But on the flipside they will also deploy easily if needed.

Gene did a good job with the execution of this rig based on what he wanted to accomplish. It is a little outside the box and he did a good job.

Todd:
Can the UMPs be cinched down to just hold two M4 mags each without too much flopping?
And I'm curious about pricing as well.
Is this going to be in the usual HSGI color spread?
How soon will you have some in OD?

If you would like to see the Popper with any configuration I will try and accommodate.

Here is how the whole popper thing came to be.
I stopped by HSGI to see about getting a couple shingles made to go on my Warlord V4-Bravo.
Gene took the time to ask what exactly I was looking for out of my kit.
I was taking a Defensive Carbine Class in a couple months and needed a good HSLD rig.
Gene said he had some Ideas floating around and asked for my input on some things.
We sat down and he started sketching and talking, and talking, and talking.. (Gene Loves to talk)...
He asked my advise on what I think people want.
He came up with a rig that looks pretty much like the one you see.
I T&E'd 2 demo's and after a couple minor changes you have the rig you see today.
The very first Popper off the line was mine and it was a custom..
I added 2 colums of PALS to each side and made my belt 2" webbing..
Ran it through my carbine course and it exceeded my expectations....
Here are a couple of pics of my Popper..

Chad - To answer your questions the Popper retails for $128.50. Other colors are on the way and MC was finished yesterday per Gene. I will check on OD.

Below is a pic of one of the mag pouches with only 2 mags in it. There is separate webbing holding the back 2 mags and there is no play at all. The magazines are held firmly in place.

Thanks Todd and Custom, that's what I was needing. Actually, not needing because I really don't want to keep buying chest rigs. But the two of you and Shihan are making that rather difficult...
Todd, I can't tell from your pic but is it just the horizontal 1" strap with a vertical 2" piece that separates the two back mags from the front or is it a full sleeve? Just curious if I could put an H bandage or compress in the front of the mag pouches or if it would slip under the two back mags.
Sorry to be a PITA.

If you think its a difficult choice wait until you see the final version of the SHihan Rig when I get pics up next week[:D] In fairness the Popper is a very nice rig so I would define your mission for the gear and make the choice from there.

Chris - You are right. There is webbing inside the pouch to hold the back 2 mags. There isn't enough room in the front mag pouch to run a cinch tight or an H Bandage but you can run the primed gauze in there. I tried everything you mentioned but I didn't have time to take pics. I will get some ater.

I Stagger my mags when only holding 2..
The wrap around bungee holds them snug, and the top bungees make sure they don't pop out..
I like the fact that my "go-to" mag sits higher and is easily accessible.

Also, as you see there is plenty of shock cord to make adjustments to hold various mags.
I'll try and post pics of my rig with AK mags in it..

ETA: I just got into gun competitions, and will be using this rig shortly for a 3 gun match..
I'll post a review and pics thereafter..

Nice rig. Is it possible to get this without the velcro & shotshell loops? Will the mag pouches take M14 mags?

I'd be interested in an OD version too.

There is alot of stuff on Gene's plate right now.
I kinda jumped the gun on posting about it too..
There are a bunch of awesome pieces of kit ready to be put in development.
Just need the time.
People need to buy up the original "Poppers" first, then new versions will come out...

This version has some subtle upgrades. One is the addition of another row of PALS webbing across the top of the 2 outside sections, another is the addition of Side release buckles to the chest area of the shoulder straps. And as with the previous version the shot shell trays and dumper pouch can be configured into any of the three sections.
