So, I am about to makeover a rifle that has been sitting in my safe for a few years now. Keeping the standard ar15 platform I have determined I would like to change the caliber to something I do not currently own. 300blk and 6.5g come to mind first. Being able to use a standard magazine is a huge plus from the 300, but the range of the 6.5 is very appealing as well. I would like this to be an 18inl, medium to heavy contour barrel. The main purpose of this gun would be for hunting critters, florida deer maybe and TONS of wild hogs. I currently shoot most everything with my .204 bolt gun but would really like to try something different. So my question to you is, which caliber? Am I overlooking another option? What are your opinions on these rounds and any others. Thanks guys!

I would stick with something that would feed through standard AR magazines and had the same case head dimensions as .223/5.56, so I think that would be the 300blk. I gather all you would need to make the swap would be a new barrel? BTW, I walked through the sporting goods department of a big discount retailer this weekend (Meijer) and was surprised to see 300blk on the shelf!

Now, do you or anyone have any experience with 300blk at say around 200yards?

I understand that the 300blk is pretty short ranged, but he said he'd be hunting Florida deer and wild hogs. 75 yards would be a long shot, I bet.

Just the opposite. I shot a pig at 450 yards just last week. I dont think I have killed a deer shy of 200 actually.

The 6.5 Grendel and even the 6.8 SPC are good out to about 300-400 yards, depending on the load. Past 400 yards and you will be pushing it. For the 300 BLK, I'd use that for under 200 yards.

I really like what I read about the 6.5. Who makes a good barrel and where can I find them in stock?

I'd start with Alexander Arms.
