I'm contemplating switching my DD Lite rail (10.0) with the Rainier Arms Evolution rail (12). I think I have to buy a standard barrel nut also because the DD comes with a proprietary barrel nut (which also means that I need to get the wrench? Please excuse me if my terms are incorrect..

You are correct. The DD Lite rail has a proprietary barrel nut requiring a proprietary wrench. The Evolution rail mounts to a standard barrel nut which requires a standard barrel nut wrench.

You will need to remove your gas block/FSB in order to replace the barrel nut.
