View Full Version : Lookin' For A Sling

I have an AR15-A4 style rifle (20" flat top with A2 fixed stock and standard rifle handguard), and I'm looking for a "tactical" 2-point sling for it. I want it to attach to the top of the rifle so that the rifle will hang in an upright position when slung from the shoulder.

I already have a strap arrangement that wraps around the buttstock through the standard rear swivel that provides a sling attachment point on the top of the stock, so that end is kind of taken care of.

What I'm looking for is a means to similarly attach a sling to the area of the front sight base that also provides a sling swivel on the top (or side) of the front sight base or forward end of the handguard. I also would like to have some sort of buckle that would permit the sling to be quickly detached at one (the forward) end.

Last but not least, I'm looking for something that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Maybe $35.00 or so. (Leaves more $$ for practice ammo.)

I have a genuine (meaning metal hardware, not plastic) milsurp VietNam "silent sling" already, so simply a means to make the attachment to the FSB may be all I need.

Something home-made would be OK, if anyone has any ideas.

Any suggestions?

I'm a huge fan of the Vikings V-TAC 2-Point Slings. Those are our duty slings. If you go to their site, you will find all kinds of attachments.

I'm a fan of the Vickers-VCAS. Similar to the VTAC, but with a different length adjuster that is easier for me to use. There is also a model with Fastex quick release points for the front and rear.
For a front attachment that fits your description, you might want to take a look at the GG&G Sling Thing. It is available with a QD Swivel (http://www.gggaz.com/qd-sling-thing-sling-attachments.html) and fixed swivel (http://www.gggaz.com/sling-thing-sling-attachments.html).

Two threads which may be relevant to your interests. I bought a Blue Force Gear Universal Wire Loop just in time to find a great deal on a Knight's M5 RAS. I never got any quality time with the BFG UWL, but it did seem to mount securely. You might consider that option. BFG makes one that has a QD socket, so that would fit your desire for a QD mount up front.

I'm using the VTAC sling. I really like it, especially on a rifle (as opposed to a carbine). I got the padded version and can't complain. It works as a shooting aid, and I can really tighten the rifle down so I can maneuver. Very versatile and comfortable.

Here's what I do for exactly what you're wanting. I run the Israeli sling on everything. For rifle though... where the FSB is just too far forward for a good sling attachment point.. I run paracord through either the Standard handguard vent holes, or through the rail hand guard vent holes.

The paracord stays on the handguard, but the Sling is removable because of the IDF clip on the ends. Paracord is silent, cheap, strong, and versatile. This method won't work for you if for some reason you don't like a piece of paracord on your weapon.

Markm, can you post a picture of your sling attachment method using paracord, please?

Here's the 2 rifle length handguards I'm running. One is A2 handguards and the other is an M5 RAS.

Thanks.

Are you concerned with the 550 cord being in contact with the barrel, and possibly melting?

After reading your post I gave this some thought. I was thinking about taking a length of 550 cord, doubling it in the middle, then tying it through two adjacent cooling holes in the lower handguard. Next I would bring the two free ends up around both handguards to the top, and continue wrapping them around for a couple of turns, ending up with the two tails on top. I would then pass the two ends together through two adjacent holes on top, tie them, then form a loop and tie that off. The resulting loop would form an anchor for the sling - I was just going to use my old Vietnam silent sling.

In the end, however, I just ordered a Boonie Packer BP42 2-point sling, plus one of their quick-disconnect straps.

The big issue is not finding what look like good affordable slings, but finding slings long enough for a full-length rifle.

Neither of these set ups has the cord touching the Barrel. I've run paracord wrapped around part of the FSB on some carbines. Never a melting issue in classes and stuff.

Not in your budget, but I use a Magpul MS2 with a VTAC pad.

I think the Blue Force Gear Universal Wire Loop fits the bill:

I too am looking for a sling. My needs are a little different though. I have a Ruger SR556SC with a Magpul PRS stock. It's a heavy gun with the 3-12x42 Nikon M-223 scope and Harris bipod. I have no problem with the front, I can use a clip on with a Magpul RSA. My problem is the rear. I can not use a clip on style attachment. I'm assuming I will need to be able to tread the sling through the flat loops on the stock. I'm finding most slings have clips on both ends and are sewn in. So who makes a sling that I can thread through in the back and clip on in the front? Does anyone know if one clip is detachable on the MS-2 or MS-3?

You can replace the end plate with a Magpul ASAP and connect your sling to that point if you want. http://store.magpul.com/product/MAG500/51

Or, doesn't the PRS stock have a picatinny rail on the bottom? You could always attach another RSA there, though I'm not sure if it would get in your way there.

You could also replace the end plate with a QD plate (Noveske makes one that's the same size and shape as the standard endplate: http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=1363 ) and connect that way.

Go with the MS-3, it's a better strap than the MS-2, and with it you can use it like a single point sling or you can unhook one clip and attach it to your rail mounted RSA and turn it into a two-point sling. The regular version will work with the ASAP that I mentioned, or you can get a QD version that will work with any QD mount for the single point, and you still use the RSA for when you want to convert to a two-point.

FWIW if you're willing to switch stocks the Magpul CTR & STR stocks have the QD mount built into them.

Always looking for a good sling.
