The standard A2 style grip that we're all familiar with is certainly usable, but there are numerous aftermarket grips that offer more options. Choices can include a different texture, rubberized material, altered contour, internal storage, colors other than black, etc.

Several months ago Bravo Company USA (http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/default.asp) released a new grip for the M4/M16/AR15 family of weapons, the Gunfighter's Grip.

The kit includes the grip, a proper slotted mil-spec type grip screw with locking washer and two grip inserts (more on those in a bit).

There are two version of the BCM grip available, designated as the Mod 0 and the Mod 1. Both grips are the same thickness, but the Mod 1 has more material on the top/back area where the web of the hand contacts the grip. The beavertail like extension slightly increases the trigger reach. Each side of the grip is textured and the front has thin horizontal lines that also assist in providing a secure hold. However, the back of the grip is left smooth. I'm considering doing a bit of work on the smooth area with a wood burner, to give it some additional texture.

The bottom of the grip is equipped with a hinged trap door that allows for storage. I found the door stays securely latched and has enough storage room for a couple CR123A batteries and foam ear plugs....or other items. [:D]

The longer of the two grip inserts is designed to fill in the gap on the underside of the trigger guard, which is otherwise a sharp area that will cause discomfort during extended use. The shorter insert is for use systems that have a built in trigger guard. I found that either one works fine with the Magpul Enhanced Trigger Guard, so I opted to use the longer one.

Installation is as simple as swapping out any other grip. Just ensure that the safety detent and spring are correctly reassembled and a full function check is done.

The grip features a reduced grip angle that is designed to be more comfortable when a modern squared up stance is used. Yes, it does have a strong resemblance to the HK 416 grip.

I've been using the Mod 1 on a Colt 6920 and found that this configuration positions my average/large hand so that the first distal joint on my index finger comfortably contacts the trigger. The Mod 0 felt too small for me, but might be a good choice for someone with small hands. The grip is available in black, flat dark earth and foliage green. Cost is about $30, which seems to be about in the middle of the pack for similar grips.

The BCM Gunfighter's Grip is another solid choice for an aftermarket pistol grip. I use a high grip and the bump on the A2 gets in the way, so this worked well for me. If I could make any tweaks for a Mod 2, it would be to add texturing all the way around the grip and make it a bit thicker.
