Look at that boring ol' rail panel! That thing needs some plastic surgery... ;)
Btw, does that panel lock into place right there? Usually the locking slots are at the ends but I'm curious if KAC rails have more than two points.

Don't say it like it's a bad thing. That's quite a shooter as-is! IMO, above a certain level of material, craftsmanship, and all that stuff, the only difference is the logo. Everybody handles a Colt, but quite few get to play with a KAC, or LMT.

Have you shot that SR-16 upper previously? Seems like reliability has been hit and miss with those uppers. When they work, they work great, but when they don't, lots of mailing back to KAC.

Didn't know where to post this question and can't seem to find an answer. I will be getting a KAC SR15 MOD1 with a URX 2 rail. I've always loved the URX 3.1 rail, how hard is it to swap rails? Do they utilize the same barrel nut or do I need their barrel nut wrench?
Finally venturing into the KAC world and this trade just fell into my lap. I'll be honest I don't like their mlok or key mod rail.
Hoping to get a good deal this forth of July for a urx3.1

If memory serves, the URX 2 and URX 3/3.1 use the same barrel nut. The URX 4 has a different one.
If you're going go from a URX 2 to a URX 3.1 good luck getting that gas block off. I'm guessing it's a Mod 0 if it's got a URX 2. The URX 3.1 was the Mod 1.

Damn I have to take the gas Block off? Not like others where the rail slides over it and you lock it down? I just found two urx3.1 rails for sale is it more of a hassle to switch the rail out?

The problem is the nut. The URX is a weird animal where it actually screws onto the receiver and then the nut is essentially a jam nut. So once you unscrew the URX nut (with the correct wrench...after breaking the thick soup of Loc-tite), you then have to unscrew the top rail. Then both the nut and the rail slide forward over the gas port.

2 July 2018, 07:08
So it's more trouble than it's worth. I know their wrench is $120 then the URX around 250 used. Maybe I'm better off selling it for what I really want, which is the MOD 1. Thanks guys

2 July 2018, 08:50
If it was easy, (as I already have the wrench) I would have replaced both my URX2's with 3.1's.
gatordev
2 July 2018, 14:16
Funny, as I prefer the URX 2. The 3.1 is fantastically light, but I don't like that I have to buy extra stuff to make it work the way I want, like a KAC handstop. Plus you're fairly locked in to light placement. What I do like about the 3 vs the 2 is being able to put a front sight where I want and not losing several rail spaces due to the flip up sight.
Either way, you got a nice rifle!

Hey let me know if you wanna swap. I've been seeing you guys love KAC never jumped on one then an awesome trade came my way and I took it. I spoke with Operation Parts and they said they could do the swap but I'd prefer the Mod 1. I'll keep ya posted, it'll never be a fil KAC due to N.Y. BS but for what it is it'll be nice

Update: No, I didn't. The item went out of stock, backordered a couple days after purchasing. After waiting nearly two full weeks with my order in the vaunted "Pre-shipping" phase, the order was cancelled. I also ordered a generic pistol sight tool that I cancelled myself. Not worth risking it not working on a anything I own; I was curiously willing to take the chance when the other parts was available, but it was never something I'd pay over ten bucks shipping for separately. I was contacted by two different people about the order as I'd vented some frustration. I removed the comments, however I don't believe that price will ever come around for real unless Santa Claus himself delivers it to my door. I picked up on that site from a mention from Geissele on his live IG feed.

New stock Rail?
Yup. It will probably be painted after an op-check of my gunsmithing today (and once it stops raining for more than 30 minutes here). I just got so frustrated with POI shift with the RAS when I applied any kind of torque to the rail but I also always liked the retro look. Seemed this scratched both itches.

Thanks. I ran it today, first zeroing it and then some simple drills dodging rain drops. Worked great and while it was only zeroing at 50y, the groups I was pulling out of this off-the-shelf-then-cut Colt rifle were significantly more consistent than what I've seen from this gun before w/ standard ball ammo. Looks like it was a good upgrade.

Done with KAC parts on this build. Only other thing I could do (besides swapping the Mk14 for an FF RAS which isn’t ideal because they’re either 7 1/4” (too short) or 10 3/8” (too long)) is the Ambi mag release and that would interfere with the Maritime bolt catch I believe
