It can be a combo of the type of light and the camera settings, most likely the type of lighting used. If you shoot in RAW adjust the color temp and see if that helps.

I just started shooting in Manual within the past few weeks. This shot was in a PVC light box with (3) 8.5"? lights and (2) 5.5"? lights with 100W 5500k bulbs. The scope was sitting on a white foam board with a white cloth as a backdrop and the lights were shining directly on the scope, not diffused or anything. I believe the camera settings were something like 1/60, F/5.6, and ISO 800. I was also playing around with a 75-300mm lens rather than the 18-55mm I normally use and took this shot sitting about 8 ft. away.

This was the original before editing:

That's what I was thinking... Only reason for the high ISO is I found the larger lens to be more sensitive to camera shake and I kept getting blurry pics until I upped it to 800. I'm going to order a mount for my tripod so I can start using that and lower the ISO and hopefully start getting much higher quality pictures.

Well, that's one way to secure your lens caps. Do they stay out of the way during use?

gatordev
21 January 2016, 15:24
Yes, though it requires you pushing them up against the BUIS on the optic. Once there, it's not an issue. A shooting buddy gave me a couple of black zip-ties, which I have apparently lost, otherwise it would be a little prettier. I learned the technique from a picture on another forum.

Zip ties are cheap! Buying a pack of black could cost you less than $2. But then, if you were super concerned about the aesthetics, you wouldn't even be using zip ties.
I love zip ties. I probably have 5000 of them. ( I use them for work.) it's kinda cool to see a gun related use for them.

As I mentioned elsewhere, DOF can easily be negated by simply upping the F-Stop and leaving the shutter open longer, which can be done with a good tripod.

gatordev
21 January 2016, 16:37
I guess I didn't complete the thought. Yeah, black ones are cheap, but I just haven't cared enough to go buy them and switch them out because the white ones work just as well. I guess we can call it "tactilazy."

This weekend will be an ACOG/RMR weekend, but the discussion and picture-taking today has made think that next weekend needs to be an ELCAN weekend.

How do you like the Aero BUIS? For the price, they really don't look like the offer much compared to the MBUS Pros, or even Troys (for e few bucks more). Plus, i like the M4 style front as opposed to the HK style

I like them. I'd buy another set, but you pretty much nailed it. At the price point, it would be hard to get people that usually get Troy's or MBUS Pro's to move over, especially since the PRO's have a smaller signature on the gun.

Troy BUIS have been my go-to for a long time. I have been using the MBUS Pros a lot more lately though. I like the smaller signature, but they actually weight more than a set of Troys. I've still got a set of the RA BUIS that need a rifle lol. I did finally get a set of KAC sights for my MK18, so the FDE Troys i had on it just found a home on my SMOS build. Pics to follow...

I have been wanting to upgrade my SPR scope to a one piece mount, but I need a 3" offset. I tried an ADM Recon (not the X model) and it was nice, just not quite enough offset. Primary Arms had a sale and I had a Samson Manufacturing DMR 30mm 3" offset QD mount in the cart.....and it went OOS in the time I got the e-mail and went to check out to pay. It is normally $190...was 50% off. I was not happy.

All front wheel drive cars with spoilers on the back should be treated like that.

You would think Raytheon, with all it's technological brilliance, could formulate a lens cover that doesn't depend of zip ties to remain attached to the optic. Of course, the entire military depends on zip ties to some degree (ever seen the work of the typical motor pool, ykwim).

Still, a very badass rifle and cool pic. I am jelly to my core, sir.

Thanks. You could roll with Tenebraex (http://www.eurooptic.com/elcan-flip-cover-kit-specterdr-1x-4x-does-not-include-ard-black-sfc-sdr-b.aspx)covers, but the price vs performance ratio isn't there for me. Plus it means having to run with the ARD, which seem counter-productive for range use.

Now that looks like fun. Was this a department shoot or a class (Petty)?

I know this is getting off topic, but...

Now that looks like fun. Was this a department shoot or a class (Petty)?

I'm a member of a very nice range that has lots of different opportunities to shoot various "disciplines" of pewing. You can plink, you can shoot out to 200, you can work pistol, and if you get there at the right time and there isn't a class going on, you can usually find an empty bay to work specifics. There's also at least one class a month at the range, but often times more, including all the big names, so the 200y range is really just an open field and there's a random of assortment of vehicles that have started to accumulate from classes.

My buddy and I typically will shoot with each other most weekends if our schedules allow. Usually 2 of the weekends will focus on some sort of specific training plan (2-gun, distance rifle, handgun, etc). One of the weekends we both shoot in a 2-gun competition that we both generally place in the top 10 (although he's more top 10 than me...and a great shooter). That particular day in the picture, we were working distance from a barricade and collecting some data on POI shifts and then moved in closer to barricade and pistol work. At the end of the session, I just went over to set up a shot showing off the CQBR/Elcan with the car. There's another picture somewhere here with my MK18 and the same car. Just having fun with the camera (even if all I had on me was my phone).

In the last year, I've take a few classes (D4, PatMac) and they have their value, but I've found coming to the range regularly and with a training plan (and a timer for metrics) has been as valuable. Just 150-200-ish rounds of pistol and 200-ish rounds of rifle used smartly can be time well spent for not as much money as blowing through a case a range visit. At least for me.

Not that making noise for the sake of making noise isn't fun too, from time to time!

It may be ugly but it's entirely functional. Just make sure the screws in the spacer are loctited in good. I had mine work loose during a gunfight in Iraq; I had to ditch the aimooint and let it hang by the dummy cord and use my BUIS.
