LWRCi and Magpul have teamed up to create a 6.8 SPC PMAG with a 30 round capacity. The catch? You’ll need proprietary receivers, currently available only in the form of a complete LWRCi rifle – the ultra-compact 8″ barreled PSD MkII.

A standard AR-15 magwell just isn’t big enough for a durable and reliable polymer mag that will fit the larger 6.8 SPC cartridge. The new magazine is larger than a standard 5.56 NATO PMAG in nearly every dimension, and won’t fit in some magazine pouches. Due to the increased length, AK magazine pouches might be a better choice, according to a source at Magpul.

The lower of the PSD MkII now has ambidextrous controls. The weapon shown here also features a new folding front grip designed by LWRCi and which requires a significant amount of effort to fold. LWRCi says this was a design objective, as the other existing designs on the market folded too easily. In fact, the mechanism is quite similar to the cross pin system commonly found in an adjustable adjustable AR stock, just without the adjustment lever.

The rifle itself won’t be available for quite some time, as LWRCi is busy with foreign military contracts. Since the mag and the rifle need one another to function, it’ll be a while (perhaps as much as two years) before you can buy them. Despite the delay, this news – along with new production of 6.8 SPC ammo from Federal Cartridge- might be welcome relief to 6.8 SPC fans in the face of the recent 300 AAC Blackout onslaught.
