Spent 3 days at a wolf rescue facility in southern Colorado and came out with a ton of potentially interesting images.

This is Abraham, a member of Mission Wolf's ambassador pack.

If you go, plan on spending at least one night there - they have open space for tents. Wolfsong is the 2nd best wake-up call you'll ever receive.

The ambassador pack is their outreach program, so you can interact with members of that group in controlled circumstances. Here's one of the pack greeting a staff member during a visitor interaction.

Wolves aren't shy - they french kiss total stangers to say hello. Wolf etiquette demands exposed teeth and direct eye contact while receiving a greeting. Maggie, the matriarch of the ambassador pack, is insistent on good manners. Rumor has it, people have ended up on the ground (still being licked) because they didn't open their eyes :P

OK, one more wolf before I get ready to leave for Wyoming and Montana tomorrow. This image needs a lot of layer masked adjustment if it's ever going to be more than just a good story, but my primary computer is kaput (lightning storm) and I haven't been able to get it into Photoshop yet. So please excuse the unfinished look, but I hope you appreciate the story behind the image.

This is Soleil, shorty after experiencing a false pregnancy. This is pretty common for wolves - it even allows non-breeding females to share in pack feeding duties. She caught a ground squirrel, which she began using as a surrogate pup. You can see the squirrel carefully tucked between her rear legs. It's one of those moments I can't believe I got to witness, let alone capture.

My first time shooting fireworks. It was an impromptu trip to see the fireworks, and they changed the location they launch them from, so my location wasn't ideal at all. UV filter probably didn't help with the lens flare, either.

The tiger swallow-tail. I used to catch those with my brothers and mount them. The ones we didn't mount we pinned and then used as gliders when they got stiff enough.

I keep hearing amazing things, and seeing amazing pics with this lens, and this fit the bill, especially for that price. I just had to go for it....

I stuck with the crop sensor sized camera because I love my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 so much, and that's for APS/C only.

Congrats and wow, that's a pretty crazy deal on the lens, especially if it is in US retail packaging. I expect you're going to like the improved autofocus capability of the T5i too.

Looking forward to seeing what you create after you get used to the new bits.

While I was told USA warranty, it is in the "White Box" packaging, not retail box. Jerry R's experience today leads me to believe it may be a grey market lens, but that doesn't really bother me, where it might get some. Same lens. Canon took my registration though....

Between the camera and this lens, I just hopped on a steep learning curve, but so far the few test shots have been "WOW"

One day, probably in the fall, I'm gonna take the camera on the MD Heights hike down there. Harpers Ferry is a beautiful town.

Speaking of hiking, have you ever done the hike over to Annapolis Rock and Black Rock? Relatively easy, beautiful views.

I still haven't made it to Harper's, only driven through the area on the way to WV. But MD Heights is on my list of things to go to and photograph from. This was coming back from the EAG Tactical class in WV this Sunday.

Oh man, yeah you gotta get to harpers ferry. I assume that pic is from the bridge on 340?

The little road just off the end of the bridge takes you right into town, but it's tough to park down there. Better off to park at the park and visitor center and take the free bus into town.

MD Heights is especially cool when we get rain in MD and none in WV/VA or vice versa, so you have muddy water from one river running into clear water from the other.

Annapolis Rock and Black Rock are along the Appalachian Trail on south mountain on rt40 just inside washington county.

If you are unfortunate enough to still be in maryland, wait til the next round of 17 year cicadas. You'll never want to see or hear another one... They were horrible in VA last year, but awesome for fishing.

This site gives you a list of what states and years they will emerge in.

We had most of the 17 year ones come out last year, and they were very noisy indeed. I didn't see any molted ones last year, but I was crazy busy at work at the time and mostly shooting landscapes during my drives to/from work instead of finding things on dog walks.

We didn't have any out here in the mountains last year. We will get them in 2016 when the PA ones come out. I remember the ones in 99 and it was ridiculous. I was playing golf nearly every day that summer and you couldn't stand them on the course at some points.

Played a bit with light painting very briefly Saturday night on the farm. I'm gonna start doing more without the light trails. Some crude examples in my opinion but I really like the Kubota one. I got some stars too, but we were too close the the glare of the city lights, sky was polluted with light.

I love hunting season because the days I'd spend on the range are now spent in the woods... Less $$$ on ammo AND groceries! (if I actually shoot something)

That's why I want to get into archery. I hunt muzzle loader and rifle, but I'd like to start earlier in the year with the bow. That and I can shoot in the back yard with little to no cost since I'm not blowing through ammo.

I've always wanted to get the 50mm f/1.8. I've Got 2 lenses thus far - a wide and telephoto lense; 35mm f/1.8 + 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 (really nice piece of glass).

I'll have to upload some photos when I get the chance this weekend.

I really like your work. Very nice images from the Hamm's brewery.

I've been using a Nikon D3 for 8 years. It's seen some harsh conditions over the years, and although it's a beast to carry, it's certainly stood up all the abuse I could dish out in the back country of Haiti, mountains of Montana, and bouncing around in a Zodiac on big seas. I have the 50mm f/1.8 (doesn't every Nikon shooter?), but I'm pretty much a zoom guy, and the D3/D700 responds so well to higher ISO's that the f/2.8 pro zooms have been my main lenses over all those years.

I've seen a couple here in MI but they are few and far between.

They've made quite a comeback here in western MD. They built a refuge across the river in West Virginia and they put a mating pair there. They have been reproducing every year for the past few, and there have been a few that have migrated into the area. They are awesome to watch. I kayak on a wooded creek in the summer, and watching those birds snatch full sized carp is incredible. We are also seeing a rise of black bear, coyotes (these are getting BAD), and even a few elk have been reported in the area, since there is an established population of elk in PA.

Good thing is I can bust coyotes in the yard at night if I want, or any field behind the house.

Here's a pic off a buddy of mine's game cam a few weeks ago, maybe 5mi from my house .

Each time he has come in he's knocked the feeder over. Last time he sat there for 3 hours from 5-8am eating. We don't have a bear season in the county I'm in, and to hunt bear in the two counties west of us you need to enter a lottery and be picked. 10 years and it will be back to an open season. I don't think I could bring myself to shoot one. I know I wouldn't eat it, so what's the point?

For mass amounts of Bald Eagles together, you probably will never see more than in Homer AK in March. They are EVERYWHERE. There was a lady that had a federal permit to feed them, and even though she died a few years ago, they still congregate in the area. March happens to be the time when I pull my boat out of storage and run it for the first trip of the year (Homer Winter King Salmon derby!) so I usually get a few shots of them. Awesome to see.

What part of PA are you in? Bald eagles are making a huge comeback in southern maryland, western maryland, north eastern maryland, north virginia. I'd imagine they are coming back in the areas of southern PA, and I know they are coming back in south central PA, I only live half a mile inside of maryland, south of the PA line, and see them all the time on Pennsylvania rivers and creeks.

SINNER
27 October 2014, 13:53
Bald Eagles are all over the Eastern shore of Maryland. I often have them on the deck at my place in Berlin. Hard to describe how impressive and intimidating they really are until you walk out the back door and have one 8' away from you. When they sit on the hand rail they actually look down at you. They are HUGE. And their talons wrap around a 2x6 top plate of a hand rail. Funny part is the brown eagles are even bigger but they are much more skittish and rarely come close enough to get the perspective of how big they really are. I have heard of more than one person witness a brown flying off with a full grown feral cat in it's talons.

I've always likes this one. Old photo, took back when HDR was uber popular.

In this photo, it really did help enhance the photo from a "standard" exposure.

Well I could do this for hours, but I wont. So I'll start with 3...

http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae143/LowFlying7Three/100_1293.jpg (http://s966.photobucket.com/user/LowFlying7Three/media/100_1293.jpg.html)

This is when I bought my first 'good' camera, and learned to use it at a friends house photographing flowers. This is one of my all time favorites from that day.

http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae143/LowFlying7Three/100_1254.jpg (http://s966.photobucket.com/user/LowFlying7Three/media/100_1254.jpg.html)

This is one of my best 'accidental perfect timing' shots. I was taking pictures of my sleeping cat, and she stretched and yawned at just the right time.

http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae143/LowFlying7Three/IMG_3546.jpg (http://s966.photobucket.com/user/LowFlying7Three/media/IMG_3546.jpg.html)

This may not be entirely mind blowing, but this is the morning of my wedding. Me and a friend spent most of the night polishing and detailing my ride. It's not so much the picture, but the story behind it that makes this one a top 5.

So when we were growing up my grandfather is the person that taught my brothers and I how to shave. To this day my brother still shaves the way my grandfather taught us...old school style. He still uses the brush and shave soap and the old school safety razor. While browsing some of my favorite IG business I noticed that DogHouse Forge (http://www.doghouseforge.com/) was doing a guest artist series on his feed and was even selling their stuff from his website. Now we have a cheese board from DogHouse and a very nice cheese cleaver from him as well. His work is top notch and the craftsmanship in it shows, but what caught my eye was a shaving brush and bowl made by Woodys Pen Werks (http://instagram.com/woodyspenwerks). Seeing the bowl and brush set made me immediately think about my brother. After talking to Woody via email I picked out a shaving set for my brother and made the purchase. My brother has received the set already and put it to use and loves it. I know it is something he will use for a long long time.

This is a beautiful place to live. It's a good thing we were able to use my wife's inheritance to buy our home outright though. There isn't much work around here and we live on basically $14,000 a year of income. But, since there are no house payments it's doable.
