Juvenile Bald Eagle - January 2015.
This is an "in the wild" shot. The bird is not captive, in rehabilitation or banded. It seems accustomed to people from living in close proximity to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keeneburg, CO - so it was content to pose in the gusty winds, eye the surroundings from a high post and maybe look for treats. I've been close to wild raptors from time to time, but never anything quite like this.

What a amazing shot. They are a lot "less pround" in the wild then people expect them to be. On the Eastern shore of Maryland I have some land and they are notorious for eating dogfood left out and raiding trash cans. Walking out onto your deck and having one on the hand rail 5' away looking down at you is certainly humbling.

Thought I would give you folks another baldie shot from later in the day in Keenesburg. This young guy is dealing with severe crosswinds coming in to land on a structural support. This was shot really late in the evening as he came in hot. I barely got the camera up in time and decided that I liked the little bit of Dutch tilt that resulted from a hurried shot. Pushing the shadows enough to reclaim color left me with some fringing I'm still trying to work out - maybe another hour or two will get it more correct.

Meh. Some of the talent on 500px is good, but quality is dropping and I find the site to be too reliant on social-networking-for-pulse. Photos should stand on their own without all the persistent "I liked and followed you....why don't you check out my stream?" comments.

RR it looks great! Personally, I like the bit of vignette you have at the corners. Helps diffuse the picture from being so sharp (if that makes sense); makes it a little softer to look at. Personally, just thinking about this now, I would have added some software generated vignetting, and not just solely from the lens.

Thanks - I'm hoping there is something sweet to be had from this.
BTW - that is software Lightroom-generated vignetting - my 70-300L doesn't naturally vignette on the 7D :) The artifacts I was referring to were along the lines of purple and cyan CA that Lightroom didn'tt handle well, a couple of sharpening artifacts (perhaps requiring complete removal of sharpening in Lightroom to instead rely on a high pass filter in Photoshop) and some lingering noise from pushing the shadows in the wings.

First attempt at "shootin' the moon". Below is a closely cropped (full pixel view) shot done at 400mm f5.6 1/400 ISO 100. It is a little "soft". Next time I am going to boost the ISO for a faster shutter speed. That should sharpen it up, and maybe brighten the image.
Any hints from the pros would be appreciated.

I'm by no means a pro, but also not an ametuer ... so call me an enthusiast lol.
It's to my understanding that if you bump up the ISO, the image will become much more "noiser" (read: grainy). Basically, the higher up you bump up the ISO, the more grainer the picture becomes, effectively detracting from the sharpness you are trying to strive for.
If you want sharpness, your best bet would most likely be getting a sturdy, quality tripod and just opening up the shutter ~ my guess would be using the bulb setting.

Bumping up the ISO one stop, so going to 200, should allow you to increase the shutter speed by one stop, so go from 1/400 to 1/800. At ISO 200 with any decent modern camera you wouldn't detract from image quality significantly. Especially if he's shooting with a full frame sensor.

Thanks guys. I'm shooting a Canon 7D on tripod with remote release. Lens is the Canon 100-400 L series wide open, F5.6 is max at 400mm. That's why I think ISO is my best option. One or two stops should not introduce too much grain. We'll see next month.

I posted this on a photog forum and then I got upped by 10 lol. This guy used a Nikon and a 400 telephoto lens with a 2x converter. Everyone there agreed to never shoot the full moon as it doesn't give it enough detail(no shadows). Said more or less its to much direct light.

Oh well in that case, yeah that's perfectly fine. I was thinking, like, going from ISO 100 to ... say ISO 1600 lol. That was what I was getting at.

From a small, dot-on-the-map town in Indiana, this marks the resting place of a 15 year-old adoptee who passed in 1877. It felt important to get a shot of this scene, even if I couldn't get to the location when the evening fog was present. The photo came out of my Olympus E-M10 kinda of stylized, so I went with that look.

Yup. I'm 20 mins from sharpsburg, 45 from harpers ferry, 45 from monocacy, 1 hour to Gettysburg, 2 hours to Fredericksburg/Bull Run. Tons of history around here. Dad goes on organized relic hunts on the battlefields (and farms bordering them) that allow it. A guy two years ago with him found a civil war era revolver. Obviously deteriorated, but cool nonetheless.

+1 I don't even wear a watch anymore, but that Planet Ocean looks incredible.

It's a first Gen (indicated by the wider silver stripe, coin edge bezel and non-clear back), but it's an awesome price.

There were a ton of Swifts and Cubs. There were probably 150 to 200 planes at least.
But it was a 'fly what you got' kind of event... They had a ton of stuff...

It was a fun day and there were a lot of cool airplanes there.
Every now and then when I'm in the mood I talk people taking me up to fly around some.
Once we took a small plane and flew over and bought a bunch of bulk ammo but we didn't even think to calculate the weight. Once we got it all loaded up we had to draw straws to see who got left for a few hours LOL
Next time I see some of the really nice jets around I will try and get some pictures... talk about big bucks. DAAAAMN. There are certainly a lot of people around with money they don't know what to do with.
If you can fly down on a $50 million dollar private jet to go play golf... you have entirely too much money.

Not that it isn't still expensive, but as it turns out, a lot of those people who fly down to play golf don't actually own the jet, they just time-share it.
It is always amusing to fly over Travolta's house, though. You can tell if he's "out" if the giant 707 that's normally parked at his house is gone.

A few years back, i flew my rented Cessna 172 in to Friday Harbor to get dinner with some friends. When i got back from dinner to preflight the airplane, there was a shiny new Beech Premier jet parked in the tie down next to mine. I felt ever so slightly inadequate. [BD]

Is that a Porsche 914? Back in the 70s you would've been hot stuff if you pulled up in that. Should make for a fun project! Post photos along the way if you remember to

Osprey are so badass. Glad to say we have a thriving population of bald eagles and osprey making a comeback in my area. Saw 3 eagles and 2 osprey the other day floating on the river in my kayak. Saw a bald eagle over the house a few days back. Pretty rare occasion since I'm not that close to water, but i know of at least 10 nesting pair within 20 miles or so.

My heart got the best of me this morning. This little one is an orphan and needs a home. So, now she has one. I can't save them all, but I can save one. We have two rescue cats and one rescue pup. So, we now have 3 dogs and 3 cats. That's OK. I like even numbers. This little one is only about 4 weeks old and weighs about 150 grams. We have named her Mustikka which is Blueberry in Finnish. Little Mustikka now has her forever home. I couldn't just let her die.
Well this certainly isn't an AR and she's not a gun either. I guess this is the best place to share this tiny lost soul who now isn't so lost.

While driving home from work after a late swing shift (it was about 2330), i witnessed some lowlife piece of shit abandon this little guy on a dark country road. Long story short, he's been adopted in to our house. I've spent that last month and a half building fences to keep him in the yard and out of the garden, dog-proofing the house to keep him out of things he shouldn't be in, and trying to get him to behave and trust us (it's pretty obvious he was neglected at his previous home, and has some behavior/trust issues and severe separation anxiety). But, he's a very gentle, loving, and social dog and he's smart too So, i'm hoping with some work we will be ale to overcome these issues, and i'll be able to get some sleep lol. Having a dog, who is essentially still a puppy (the vet figures he's about a year and a half old) is a lot of work, especially when you're not used to having a pet. Plus, all these additional expenses are really cutting in to my firearms funds. :P

The second shot looked better in person...too much glare from the window, I'm afraid. And here's the actual "attack" with "missile" in-flight.

Thanks, guys! I appreciate the advice! The big thing i'm trying to work through now is getting him to stop chewing everything up. He has chewed clothing, DVDs, furniture, pillows, you name it. He's got plenty of toys and bones and other things that are meant for him to chew. So, this has definitely taxed my patience. But, he's just a dog doing what dogs do. Hard to get too upset. Still, it's something i'd like to correct.

I don't want to discourage you, but that's going to take a bit of time and patience to correct. Here's an old picture of the damage one our's did..

Talk about frustrating! I completely get it, especially when they have a dedicated chew toy feet away... But keep in mind chewing is a nervous habit. Their uncomfortable, and chewing calms them down. It's really pronounced in rescues from questionable backgrounds. Unfortunately it's a slow process to correct in our experience, but just like you wouldn't expect someone to quit smoking over night, chewing can't be curbed that quickly either.

Damn! I'll count myself lucky it hasn't got to that extreme here! When i picked him up off the side of the road, he was filthy and smelled like a barn. He also had worms (well, still has them...little bastards are tough to get rid of!). And that his previous owner didn't think enough of him to even take him to the Humane Society (which is no-kill in my area), speaks volumes about where he came from. I don't know the details of what he went through before we got him home, but i'm sure he had it pretty rough. I cut him a lot of slack based on that alone. That makes total sense that chewing is a nervous habit. I certainly wouldn't expect him to completely adapt to an entirely new environment overnight either. I'm sure it'll take a lot of time and patience to break him of bad habits, and completely earn his trust so that he's 100% comfortable in his surroundings. If i'd been even 15 seconds slower in my trip home, i never would've seen him. He would've wandered down the road in the opposite direction i was going, chasing after the asshole in the pick-up who abandoned him. So, he landed in my lap for a reason i reckon.

Selling off most of my collection from 20's to 60's, but this is a keeper. Twins baseball went to FM, but with this I can pick up AM games outstate. He has a Paella pan over twice that size and normally cooks on his outdoor grill. Made two small batches that night because one of the guests was not into seafood. Smaller Paella with just the chicken and sausages (not shown) for them.

Very nice shots of the fall colors. Enjoyed looking at them while on the lanai sipping a frozen margarita - it was 90 here yesterday. [BD] I do miss fall weather. We are from Tennessee originally, and leaves turning usually coincided with the onset of the rut. I also miss freezing my nerdlinger off sitting in a tree stand.
Thanks for sharing.

Messing around with my Christmas present (Nikon D3300 with an 18-55mm lens) and saw a buck bedded down. Started stalking up toward him and the other two stood up too. The guy on the right is pretty neat in that he looks to have shed one antler, but still has the other:
http://i.imgur.com/0LcXc0v.jpg
Got a bit closer and this guy pops up right next to them:
http://i.imgur.com/on05DLX.jpg
They eventually spooked and took off, and there were three does with them as well. I'm still learning how to use this thing, and I already wish I had a bigger lens.

Yeah, I was probably 20-25ish yards away from the big fella, a little farther for the trio. Both of those pics have been cropped pretty good. We have a large stand of woods in the area I work (and there's no hunting on campus), so the deer we have around aren't too terribly afraid of people.
I think my next camera related purchase is going to be a 70-200mm.

70-200 with a magnifier is one way to go but it's going to mess with your f-stop too. For example a f2.8 would only be able to go as low as f5.6 on a 2x magnifier if I remember correctly. Once you get into the bigger glass like the 300's and such they sure are nice and for the price they better be!! Buckeye I'm jealous of that shot brother!
