I don't have many good pictures compared to many here, but here's one I'm proud of managing to capture out of pure luck. This is in Haiti in 2010. I had my D80 sitting on the console for most of my flights and would try and grab shots when I could. This was one of the LZs (Killick) that serviced a small field hospital that triaged a lot of very hurt people. We were sitting in the LZ (which was a tiny soccer field that only two aircraft could get into at a time), the crewman in the picture was coming towards our helo. The other crewman in the back asked, "Is anyone getting a picture of this?" I quickly grabbed my camera, took off the cap and shot this over my shoulder, as I couldn't turn enough to see through the viewfinder.
The baby was no more than 2 months old, with Mom in tow. The crewman holding her is actually from Haiti. We had a short 2 minute flight to the Hospital ship to drop them off, but on the way, the baby began seizing in the other crew chief's hands. A quick call to the ship and we got head of the line privileges to land and the baby ended up being okay. One of many good days during my time there.

Just when I thought I was doing OK with kit glass, this 'new to me' Nikon 85 f1.4 D found itself latched onto my body. So far the MFisn't too hard, but does take a bit of patience to make sure I'm right. I have to MF since my body cant AF this lens. f1.4 waits for NO ONE! Since its so thin, getting people photos just right is proving to be a bit difficult since the focus must be on the eyes. This was the 3rd shot I took with this lens...

haha we have 2 ( 14 and 17 )and I am well past the 30 mark... almost over the hill. She just likes babies. I am just glad our 2 girls can feed and clean themselves, other than that they are awesome to hang out with and do fun family stuff with. They are awesome and I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world. All the boys know they have to go to range session before taking either of the girls out. When you shoot out the groin section of a target they know that 11pm means 10:45pm :)

This is what I do on Friday nights. Watermark is my own. This particular one was shot with a Canon 40D and an EF80-200mm f4.5-5.6 II. The next set I take will be with my new 70-200mm f/2.8, and I expect they will be miles better in quality.

I purchased a new Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens. The photo quality is considerably better. This particular school didn't have as good of lighting as the one above, so I was shooting slower than I wanted. In action shot vs still is pretty good by comparison.

Pretty fun. Hardest part is getting focused in the dark. These are a bit blurry because I forgot my remote, had to hold the shutter release and try to keep it steady on the tripod. ISO at 100 or 200, aperture as wide as she'll go and 15+ second exposure. Had to play with the times to get the colors to pop, gonna play around with higher ISO too, I've seen good results around 800 or so
Pretty cool article I read on it here. One thing I've note is that the ones I took are one exposure, the lady in the article took multiple shots and stacked them.

Two off camera left and right of the bike through softboxes. Had one on camera in a blackened Stofen diffuser to trigger the High Speed sync on the other two flashes. Cheap way to do it.
Thanks, it's a fun bike to ride, more than I though it'd be.

I've started shooting with a Canon 7D and my 70-200 f/2.8. It works wonders for sports. I've been experimenting with shutter speeds and ISO levels, and I think I found a happy medium last week. My next experiments are going to be with AF points (I have shot with manually set center spot thus far and it's cost me some good shots), as well as exposure meter modes.
Here are some examples from recently:

Sounds like you lead quite the exciting life. My number one hobby (probably even more so than firearms) is fishing. Didn't get to go much this summer, and the bass are starting to feed really nice here in MD right now. Did manage to place 5th in one of the larger tournaments of the year (minus the pro tourneys) here on the Potomac.

I've never used a Nikon or a Canon camera. I use Pentax. Regardless I can help you get to macro on the cheap if you want. Caution though, because you will get hooked looking for bugs and stuff.
I won't be able to help with the settings and stuff but the general setup is easy, and no you don't have to buy some expensive macro lens. I shoot most macro shots with a $100 manual ebay lens.

I'll look at my lenses. I have the 300mm IS/AF lens, and a 500mm? Non IS/AF lens that is from my wife's old 35mm SLR, the main reason for the Nikon was it was compatible with a lot of her older high dollar stuff.
I would appreciate some coaching sometime. The camera is smarter than me:P

Do you have a flash? You will only need that (sometimes) and one other piece of gear... well two...
You need a reverse ring... what it does is it screws into the threads on your lens... where you normally put filters.... the other side of the ring is a camera mount.
You will also need an old lens, preferrably 28mm that has an aperture ring on it.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/321063637412?lpid=82
Screw the ring onto the lens and mount it to your camera. Yes your lens will be on the body completely backwards. You should only use very high F stop numbers otherwise your depth of field will be way too shallow. Most of the time focusing is done using live view mode and moving the camera in and out. You have to stalk or sneak up on your subjects most of the time (if they are alive, like bugs)....
Often you will have to use flash because you are stopping way down (like F11 to F22) or whatever the lens allows.
If you want to use an old manual 50mm lens you can... it works the same, just less zoom. A 28mm lens gives more zoom in macro than a 50mm lens will. But get both and try it.
Needless to say all this is done in complete manual mode.

Yes I do have a flash, well the one made in the camera. Ill check on my lenses tomorrow. I may be off on the sizes.
Thanks for the advice though. Maybe I'll play a little tomorrow. My latest 'desire' to shoot is old 18 wheelers that are Working, or sitting 'forgotten'. My true passion is old semis, in my day to day adventures I see a lot just sitting, and a lot working still. Harvest season is drawing to a close here, that's what really gave me this idea. So I'm wanting to get out and see what I can do. Hopefully get some good ones of our trucks working too.
Plenty of bugs on a farm though. Lots to practice with!

Well my first 'good' camera was a Z1050IS kodak. $225 dollars, nothing fancy but it turned out to be a awesome camera, for no more than what it was, it had an incredible zoom, and was feature packed like some big cameras, in the right setting, you could take pictures with the lens nearly against the subject. For me the best way to learn, is to play with it. Flowers and birds, two things that I normally paid no attention to, really became an obsession for awhile. My friends wife is an amateur landscaper, and they have a meticulously done yard, I spent a weekend there just photographing flowers and birds in trees. I really learned the camera, because I had a seemingly endless supply of subject matter. I need to take the time to do this same thing with my new one, but I lead a much busier life than I did 6 years ago.
I don't know if I have the artists eye, but I try. Its fun either way. Trucks and livestock take the top pics for me.

I can shoot pictures of wildlife and bugs all day long. That's all we have for 15 miles in any direction around here. I want to shoot people and do portraits and other stuff like that. I also really like foreign cultures/languages/food etc.
(I am fluent in mandarin... reading writing and especially speaking)...I would like to capture people though, all kinds of people...
I have several very professional photographer friends so every time I think I did good I look at their work, and look at mine, and go 'damn, back to the drawing board'...
All in all since I first picked up a camera it's been a bit over 2 years since I started. Before I carried around a point and shoot but I never owned any kind of proper camera in my life until about 2 years ago.

Photographing people here is not something I get into, but an entirely different culture in an entirely different world is an exciting idea.

Sharing this picture because my little girl crawled for the first time today. Exciting!!! She has Down Syndrome so her muscle tone is behind other children her age.. We are very excited to get to this point. She is a huge joy!
Awesome to hear she's doing well. She looks as happy as a pig in slop in that pic. Enjoy it, she's gonna grow up quick.

She's beautiful brother! :D congrats on the milestone! My wife's younger brother also has Down syndrome and he's far and away the most positive, loving and perpetually upbeat person in my life. He sleeps out here at our house most nights and honestly I couldn't imagine life without him.

My favorite picture of my youngest daughter was when she was around that same age. She was leaning over smelling a flower. That was with my 35 mm camera before digital cameras. I had that blown up to an 8x10 and framed. She has it now.
Great pic! You're a good Dad.

No, but really. It's awesome. These times are the best and the worst, he has such an attitude and he's so stubborn and bull-headed, but when he's being loving and screaming my name as he hears my bike pull into the yard each day and running to me, it makes it all worth it.

That's cool. I played a homeless bum in a short film once. They said I was the most believable actor in the film. I told them, I wasn't acting. ;-). Most of what I work on is Television stuff. I've been fortunate to get to work on award winning shows (Even an Emmy) and with a lot of famous people. I use to live in Nashville and worked with a lot of country stars and even Dick Clark Productions. Right now I am enjoying working on Stop the Threat. It's a low(er) budget , but pretty good show that is currently airing on the Pursuit Channel. We are airing reruns on the Sportsman Channel. Eventually we will run the new episodes on Sporstman. It's about firearms and self defense.
