View Full Version : Can I put a thorntail SBR mount directly behind a Troy flip-up?

I want to put a thorntail behind my front sight, and eliminate the rail section on the side of my handguard.

Anyone done this? I've only found pics of thorntails mounted behind an FSB and it's a pretty tight fit, so I'm thinking it will probably interfere with a flip-up:

Is this a photo of your rifle? Have you taken it off yet and seen if it works? If it works for you, that is all that matters. Let us know what you find out.

Yep, that's my rifle and I haven't ordered the thorntail yet.

Wanted to ask here first to see if it's doable.

I also have a Troy fixed front sight that has a much narrower profile and I suppose I could swap it out if necessary.

I'll definitely let you know if it works or not.

I have a standard Thorntail and just took a look. It won't work. The extension arm of the Thorntail rides very close to the upper rail and the base of the front sight interferes.

Damn, that's a bummer.

Thanks for looking though!

How about the IWC mount n slot universal mount? That one attaches right to the Troy rail..

Wow I didn't even know about those IWC universal mounts, that looks like it will work.

Thanks!

Not sure if its any different than the Haley drop wing mount either??

Yeah, it's different.

The dropwing version has an offset which would put the light lower.

I actually prefer the "straight" universal mount, and judging from the pics I will not have any clearance issues with my front sight.

Slight necropost, but it works on my NSR and Rainier Evo railed ARs. It will interfere with your ability to fold down the front sight, but it is doable. I don't use Mini Scouts, though.

Any chance of some photos? I'd like to see the clearance area.

Sorry about the delay, I don't check this forum often. Photos aren't the greatest. You'll need fingernails of steel, a key, or a round of 5.56 to collapse the Troys. This doesn't mean much to me, and should mean even less to a pro trigger puller - if A Serious Optic craps out on you and you NEED your irons, they probably won't need to go down for a while. Furthermore, they don't really cause serious issues getting a sight picture with the ACOG or Aimpoint.

The Thorntail SBR mount WILL NOT clear the Diamondhead BUIS that came with the RUC.
