I recently obtained a High Velocity Arms (http://high-velocity-arms.myshopify.com/)Ambi Magazine Release (http://high-velocity-arms.myshopify.com/collections/gas-blocks/products/ambidextrous-magazine-release) and their ASTG, or Advanced Safety Trigger Guard (http://high-velocity-arms.myshopify.com/collections/gas-blocks/products/astg-advanced-saftey-triger-guard). I am a left handed rifle shooter, so I am always interested in Ambi controls on my AR. Before receiving the High Velocity Ambi Mag release, I've previously used Troy and KAC ones, so I wanted to see how this stacked up.

I also picked up the ASTG as I wanted to try out both of their products at the same time. It didn't hurt that both parts matched with a Nickel Boron Finish.

If you're familiar with AR's, installation should be no problem for you. A Mega Arms (http://www.megaarms.com)stripped lower receiver was used for this. The Ambi Magazine Release installs the same as a standard magazine release. The spring is not included so you'll need to provide your own.

The ASTG was also a simple install. A roll pin is provided to secure the rear of the trigger guard. An allen head screw is also provided to secure the front, much like Magpul MOE trigger guards.

Initial thoughts and impressions:

Both parts are well machined and appear to be well made. The Nickel Boron Finish is uniform and is asthetically pleasing. The trigger guard has textured spots for your trigger finger to naturally index. As an LEO, I love this feature and after using it, surprised no one else is doing this. We are taught trigger discipline over and over, and this helps with that. It is also larger, allowing use of gloves for shooting. The Ambi Magazine Release also shares the same finish and machining qualities. A test of several magazines, Lancer, PMAG, USGI, Troy, worked just fine with the release. Both sides of the release worked without any issues.

One area of concern is a high MSRP. The Ambi Release is $99.99 and the ASTG is $114.99, which may price some AR15 builders out of the market. I know some shooters like me, don't mind spending money on quality gear, so ultimately it's up to you to decide what upgrades are worth it.

Also the installation went smoothly, but magazine release have very tight tolerances. I could see a potential issue if installing this into a billet lower. High Velocity contacted me and stated they would reduce the diameter of the magazine release by a thousandth of an inch, so future runs should have no issues.

The magazine release does not appear to be compatible with battery assist devices, such as the Magpul BAD lever, but if you're using the magazine release for left handed shooting, you probably don't have a BAD lever.

I will no doubt update this after several thousand rounds of use, but needless to say, so far I am impressed. It also doesn't hurt that it is all sorts of good looking. [:D] More to come.
