Jerry, Stick has a few thousand rounds through that upper, and I can tell you first hand the Surefire is fine. It gets pretty dirty, but nothing a rag and some elbow grease won't cure. I don't think it's the most ideal setup personally, but great for guys who want a light but are not allowed or don't know how to add rails.

I just finished my first AR build of any kind, last weekend...an AR pistol. I took all my parts to the guys over at Radical Firearms (in Stafford, TX) and they "tightened" it all up for me as well as doing a 5 round function test. It went bang every time. YES! I finally got to shoot it Wednesday and boy was I happy with the result!

1) Spikes upper, lower, enhanced lower parts kit, melonite gas tube, and Barking Spider 2.
2) Yankee Hill 10.5 ", 1 in 9, melonite barrel and low profile gas block.
3) WMD Nickel Boron charge handle and BCG.
4) Radical Firearms 12" keymod rail.
5) KAK Industries buffer tube kit with Sig 15 Arm Brace.
6) Gear offset rail mount with Inforce WML HSP.
7) Magpul AFG
8) Eotech and Mapul BUIS

The weapon

The shots that are almost dead center were the last 5 rounds at 50 yds. I would like to say this was offhand...but I cannot tell a lie. ;) I used a Harris bipod on the front while I was doing the sight in. I CAN'T hold that steady. [:D]

Later!

would the buis front sight block the designator if in front? Would lengthen your sight radius quite significantly if swapped.

I doubt it would interfere....they usually take fixed front sight posts into account like on .mil rifles when designed

I never minded a fixed front sight. I don't have them on my ARs but I like them...some classic feel or something... I also like having the forward assist, brass deflector, and all that.

I feel like the short barreled ARs require a can also (especially under 12" but I'm suppressor biased)!

Also, my can is so hot in that pic the white portion in the center cooled back down to FDE in about 20 minutes. It's a 7.62 suppressor and even at 20oz it feels right at home on that pistol

It won't interfere with the laser, but the flashlight splashed the base of the BUIS somewhat and i did notice some shadowing on the wall across the room. If it was a fixed A2 sight it wouldn't interfere at all. I'm sacrificing sight radius for hand placement and control, as the buttons for the light and laser are on top of the box. After all they are just backups, and the pigtail remote it came with is a joke.

Yeah - me too. I was looking last night at putting the Thordsen kit on mine but found out that the cover won't fit the Phase 5 pistol tube. The diameter is just a little too much. I'd have to change the pistol tube. they make those saddles in FDE too (though FDE is currently out of stock).

I'm just giving you a hard time. I had a 10.5 and although it wasn't too finicky with ammo, it did have a hickup every now and then. I don't notice the extra inch on my 11.5 except for the fact that it cycles everything just as good as every other rifle I've owned. I would love a 10.5" upper, as long as I already had an 11.5".

Nope. Are you set on a rail? I got a standard weight barrel and a MOE SL hand guard, mainly because I believe that with a carbine length fsb you will be a lot less likely to put enough pressure on the barrel, whether with a sling or on a barrier, to greatly reduce accuracy.

I'm not set on anything. I have a 12" rainier force sitting at home. Would be open to trades, but I'm not sure I want another moe hand guard. Have one on my 14.5" I may just end up with what was originally planned which was a 10.5" and a kx3. But then I can't suppress it. Not to say another upper isn't in my future.

I could always go the drop in 2 piece rail route. Midwest or something similar.

Sounds like we are very similarly built physically, big shoulders, barrel chested and shorter arms, which reinforces my thinking about switching from my Sig brace to your setup... The SB15 is ok but I hate that it rotates on my Guntec SB15 tube. No complaints otherwise, so maybe I'll just leave it and put it towards the Scorpion EVO build I have planned.

These super short pistols look cool, but anything under 10" is pretty much just a range toy right? Not bashing just always wondered how reliable/effective they would be. Shoot it much?

They can be made just as reliable as any other length AR, and are quite "effective"... My 7.5" pistol length gas AR has over 2,700 rounds through it, needed no tuning, runs with a standard weight or H2 buffer, and has had no failures that weren't from bad ammunition.

People who don't understand short ARs must not understand any PDWs, their purpose or application. Lots of people bash 7.5" ARs just like lots of people bash .380 pistols... Funny thing is, none of the naysayers have ever volunteered to let me shoot them with it, despite how "underpowered and ineffective" they are. [:D]

This isn't actually my pistol, it's a buddy who wanted me to put the upper together. Ran about 300 rounds through it today without issue. I think he saw the value of the KVP Linear Comp, after he shot his AAC Brakeout out of his 10.5 SBR for the first time.

The design is so that it doesn't have to come off the body to get to it. When you slide the bag to cover your chest is lays horizontally making access into the bag from the side zipper. Sling bags make great off body carry bags for Pistols, AR-Pistols and broken down SBR rifles. Tho I do not suggest off body concealed carry of an SBR :p

Just finished today. Cheapo 9mm AR.
Used BCM upper with unkown 8”barrel and 1/28 thread ext.
9.25 Aero enhanced M-LOK , Griffin Rev9 “K” can
PSA lower and hybrid BCG, Q9 buffer w/EP Wolff spring

4359

The PSA uppers have no ejection port doors and the hybrid bolt carrier snags and won’t pop open this one. I can hammer it open with a light rubber mallet blow on the CH so I think a little Dremel ramping on inner door wil solve the issue.

EDIT: I popped in a polymer Strike Ind. dust cover and filed an incline where the bolt snagged. Problem solved

Heh. I usually hate braces. They suck, including other SB Tactical ones. However their PDW brace has enough material at the end where you could shoulder it. Seems like these push the edge of what a "pistol" is without a stock. I ordered a FDE one from Brownells that will ultimately stay on this particular gun. The black one I plan to rotate around guns I will SBR.

The PDW braces are a VERY far cry from where pistol braces started. They finally converted me over to finding AR pistols practical.

Just put together this Aero M4E1 7.5. It’s getting blasted and coated so I grabbed a sharpie and drew all over just for the hell of it.

We have a very "gun friendly" Sheriff, in a conservative state, but a couple of years ago, I was talking to some deputies at a local indoor range, who according to them, the Sheriff was getting just about sick of seeing people flaunting their Sig braces by shouldering them to "double" as an SBR. Usually goof balls who gathered around acting cool like they were smoking "secretly" in the bathroom at school, knowing all well that everyone knew what they were doing but making a spectacle out of themselves anyway. If you regularly deal with NFA stuff anyway, and don't or won't mind all that goes with it, why not just build a pistol in the first place? Going over the "off topic" cliff now, but sometimes I think we're our own worst enemies.

Well, I guess it's a good thing the Sheriff doesn't regulate NFA items.

Besides the ATF has already ruled that shouldering a brace does not change the classification. Shoulder away!

FortTom
7 December 2017, 13:02
No, he doesn't (regulate) NFA items, but he does have the power of arrest. He also gets a say on who gets a concealed carry permit. All of that, and given the ATF has ruled that way was not really the point, it's pushing the very boundaries of the law, to the point that it gets the attention of our friends, much less our enemies. (the "anti's).

FT[:D]

Pushing the boundaries of the law is kind of the point. In large part, pistol braces are making SBR laws obsolete. There isn’t much functional difference between shouldering many of the new braces and shouldering their stock counterparts but we still don’t have blood flowing in the streets because of it. (Or, whatever the original ban justification was.)

UWone77
7 December 2017, 13:59
If the Sheriff made an arrest on that, (not sure what the laws are in KY) but here, I'd just be wondering what new guns I'd be purchasing with the settlement. There is no specific law here that says you cannot shoulder a pistol. As obscure as this issue is in the general firearms arena, I'm sure no other state has a law specifically banning this.

We also live in a Shall Issue state, the only say the Sheriff here has for concealed permits is... Yes. [:D]

Having to tiptoe around an elected official like that is bogus. However, not all states are like that. Here in SC, our permits go to the State Law Enforcement Division.

It’s leather but it does look a bit like rawhide.

And there are a lot of different reasons for the rainbow unicorn kitty. I love guns, I love cats, and I try not to use my firearms as a reason to take myself seriously.

There’s also a general idea online that customizing your guns will get you convicted of... something, if you ever have a DGU with one, so I like to pose the question about how badly the rainbow unicorn kitty would hurt legal defense. It’s sort of the antithesis to the punisher logo.

RT a recent topic elsewhere. The port door seems to be quite a source of righteousness, be it for the comment printed on it, the fact that it was a duty weapon, or whatever else. Personal items are fine, IMO, but something used in the course of one's work should have some restraint, again, IMO.

Thoughts?

RT a recent topic elsewhere. The port door seems to be quite a source of righteousness, be it for the comment printed on it, the fact that it was a duty weapon, or whatever else. Personal items are fine, IMO, but something used in the course of one's work should have some restraint, again, IMO.

Thoughts?

Liability is virtually a non existent issue when it comes to thematic design choices on a firearm. The officer with the you’re effed inscription on his dust cover definitely made a dumbass decision to put inflammatory rhetoric on his duty weapon, but it was ruled legally inadmissible and he got a not guilty verdict. His consequences in that situation, even as bad and questionable as it was boiled down to personal and social consequences. Not legal ones.

You won’t see me putting racist or inflammatory remarks or imagery on my guns for the same reason you won’t see me wearing them on my chest. Those are poor social decisions independent of any firearms issue. Beyond that, there’s zero case law indicating that such adornment has ever changed the ruling of a good shoot to a bad shoot, which is the more important issue.

I posted this one before with an SBR lower and Recce 7 can. Now it has an Omega 9K and SBA3. I like this brace so much I doubt I will ever get a fourth NFA lower.

Stupidity springs eternal in Uffdaland. Took this to the range today with the 12.5 (which is a slice of heaven) and it was single action only. Tried H2, 3, & 4 buffers with no joy. It functioned fine as an SBR. Hmm? Got home and realized I had just swapped the A5 buffer and rifle spring into the A3 carbine tube!

Much as I hate paying for the new Photobucket, I’m thankful it is geezer friendly.

I decided I “needed” another PDW so finished off a Sionics lower to match their 11.5” upper and popped on an SBA3 to free up another SBR lower. I’m trying a JP captured buffer just for grins. And the 300 BLK has now got a proper carbine spring and heavy buffer.

I don’t normally push it, but like knowing I can tote these loaded in the truck if necessary. If they had names they would be Fireball, Rude, and Mr. Manners.

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s92/uffdaphil/4BDF3132-AF20-4A65-886C-F28D5134D1B8.jpeg (http://s150.photobucket.com/user/uffdaphil/media/4BDF3132-AF20-4A65-886C-F28D5134D1B8.jpeg.html)

P.S. I discovered that forcing off a well staked castle nut may gouge the nut, wrench and strip the tube threads. Drilling out most of the staked mass first with a 1/16” bit works well.

I want to try a Geissele braided buffer spring. Most of mine have worn in (regular springs) but my Colt spring just sproings so badly even with tuned gas and when it’s spotlessly cleaned

I had one that came with a BCM kit that noisy. I broke it back down, hosed the shit out of it with brake cleaner and then swabbed it with white lithium grease, and swabbed the inside of the tube with a mixture of moly based grease and aeroshell. It worked much better than thin film lubricants.

Thanks UW. I looked at both, availability (in black) was an issue, so I have a Strike Industries QD mount (for the M-Lok) on the way. I will use a 2 Point from the QD to the blade. I have a 1 point on the other pistol, and may convert later when "stuff" comes back in stock. Going to GriffonSec's next week to zero the irons and Romeo 5, and run it hard to be sure it works with ball, HD, and my lead reloads; magazines may be problematic as well - need to be sure everything works. Working on a detailed Product Review, that I will post later this month.

I'm curious about the Arisaka fingerstop (love mine), but does the ATF give that a pass as far as a vertical forward grip on a pistol?
