My first pistol, I bought this on a broke college student's budget.
Dropped in the dirt, kicked, but has never experienced a malfunction, it's currently got a bent front sight post and a could probably use a good cleaning.

Here's what I started with, a box stock and slightly used Colt's Officer ACP
http://i.imgur.com/iOKzO5k.jpg
Got in touch with the Colt's Custom Shop folks after kicking around various ideas for a few years and here's the end result:
Refinished, front tritium sight, rear black Novak sight, Ed Brown beavertail, complete dehorn, long trigger with trigger job. Instead of a checkered front strap, I opted for the Gold Cup style serrations on the front strap.

I still have a little cleaning up to do but I needed it back together for a match.
My other "project gun" wasn't running right.
I will get some pictures posted of that one after a little more work.
Did you do the checkering and stuff yourself? how long?
Also looks like you filed, milled or something the flats on the side of the slide...

I've done all the work on this. Bobtail, new sights, milled all the roll marks off, chamfers on the bottom of the slide, ball cuts in Front of the dust cover, cleaned up the slide/frame overhang and cleaned up the grip safety fit a little bit. The most recently the trigger guard undercut and checkering.
The checker took about 7 hours. I have to go back and deeper a few lines.
This is the first real gun I've checkered. Before this only caspian "practice" frames.

Details though on all you did there....
Thank you Sir. In Georgia I lived about 20 minutes away from John Harrison. IMHO the best custom pistolsmith for 1911 work. He had a short list of "approved" base guns that he would work on. I emailed him and asked about the Ruger since it was not on the list. After a few email exchanges he said, "Bring it over and let me look at it." I wanted a checkered front strap, night sights, and a trigger job. He took all of about 1 minute to detail strip it and began to tell me what he liked, and what should change. Since this would be his first Ruger, I gave him free hand to do anything he felt necessary, or that would be aesthetically pleasing. While he worked on it, I sent the original medallions to Sarge in Phoenix and asked him to inlay them into a pair of exhibition grade desert ironwood grips. A few months and a couple of dollars later, this was the result.
Blank the slide
"Duty/Carry" Trigger job - 4.5 Lbs
Ball Cut the slide
Replace all internals with Harrison parts (except the barrel)
Harrison Night Sights
Checker the front strap
Install and blend a magwell
Flush cut bevel and polish the barrel - Harrison match bushing
Weld up and recut the frame for beavertail GS
Interrupted French Border on the slide top
Custom Carry Bevel Package
and on and on - the invoice was three pages long.
When the work was completed and I picked up the pistol, Mr. Harrison gave me a signed letter stating it was Harrison Custom's very first Ruger SR-1911 for provenance. A very nice gesture from a true gentleman.

Just traded a CZ PCR and Walther PPS for this like new TRP. The "Black Army" is fun and accurate enough, but the primitive sights make it a no go for defense.1911s are the only semi-auto I really enjoy shooting. The Glocks etc. are mostly about just maintaining proficiency.

Thanks much, gentlemen.
Grips are from Cherokee Hills Exotic Grips. I have several sets of Ironwood scales along with many medallions. Had them do a stipple and cut that's somewhat unique to them. Medallions are pewter, finish is NP3, which ended up working quite well together.
Pistol was my father's (Jerry R above), and he could tell you more about what all has been done to it, but if I remember right, he bought it in 70, my birth year. Was kind enough to let me pilfer it from his safe to complete my Colt collection.

Thanks! There's a 70 Series Government model at Mars, and the rail gun will join it hopefully soon for a matching build. The Combat Commander was my Father's, and his first automatic pistol purchase in 1970.

My first gun. My dad bought it for me for Christmas when I was 18. Not sure how many thousands of rounds it has through it, but other than the slide release breaking and some new Trijicon sights I put on it 5 years ago, it's still all original. Kind of impressive. I guess I should probably change out some springs "soon."

NICE! My first hand gun my father bought me was a Springfield 1911 at 17 after I got back from Ft. Benning. Sadly I sold it back in 05 for... a Glock. I got into Glocks for a while and Sigs. I came back years ago to the 1911 and I still love them and carry them. For me it is the best damn fighting handgun with a Glock pulling a close 2nd, but a 1911 will always be my go to. Yeah I have 8+1 rounds, but I can put those rounds on target under duress every time.

So I've been wanting to do a few light mods to my SS Officer Model Colt. One of my favorites, but hated the sights, and the grip safety didn't function properly. I also wanted to keep the lines of the pistol compact and squared off, so I opted to purchase the Wilson Concealment grip safety, but went with their Spec Ops hammer thinking that would help keep it "boxy" looking. Decided I wanted a 10-8 rear sight, and a dovetailed night sight of whatever recommendation. I found a fantastic picture of a blended GS linked to Benchmark Precision's website, and immediately contacted Rob to see if he was available for some "simple" work. Whatever ends up being truly simple?
While looking at the work on his site, I contemplated 90* BHP cuts, but was a no-go due to the amount of material. Rob offered the beveled lower slide and I asked about French Borders. Rob accepted my work request, and off it went.
Shortly after I received an email about the ledge that would be left from the Colt sight, and an option to clean it up, but flattening the entire top of the slide, and I agreed, but asked for serrations as well.
The following is what Rob sent back to me, and I'm floored, absolutely beautiful work. The man is DAMN good at what he does. I can't even go into how I feel about this pistol right now except to say I'm glad I decided to send it to him. If I had to do one thing, I'd most likely have trued and high cut the front strap until I decide on treatment, texture and magwell or not. Some quick shots, just got it 2 hours ago.

Not trying to speak for Jerry, but I know those pistols, the Baer Monolith was hard chromed by Baer (can do at Metaloy) and the stainless Ruger above was finished by John Harrison when he built it (brushed/blasted stainless). There's a lot of smiths out there turning out great Ceracote jobs too. Can opt for DLC/PVD as well. I"m going that route on a couple myself.

The black Micarta on the officer is from Davidson knives, now out of business. I've had several made by Derwood Mfg, great people to work with, and fit the frame a bit better than VZ. Taylor is good people, should hit him up ~ http://www.derwoodmfg.com/Shop/grips/1911
The ones on Jerry's Ruger are from Sarge ~ http://shop.thefinergrain.com/
The Desert Ironwood on the above Commander were done for me by Cherokee HIlls Grips from a set of scales I had here at the house. Derwood also worked up a set for me from scales. http://cherokeehills.biz/Page-/-Category-1

Jerry, do you send your 1911's to someone specific for refinishing?
I'm going to have to get mine cleaned up and I'm apprehensive about doing it myself.
Actually, the only two pistols that have a non-factory finish on them are the Para-Ordnance and the Colt Commander. Both of those were done by Roguard - NP3, and those two don't really photograph well (not at my skill level anyway). All the rest are (still) factory finish. I tend to stay with factory hard chrome or stainless. With the carry rotation I have setup, the only one showing holster wear so far is the S&W Performance Center CQB in 45.
Sorry, there is one other ... I bought parts and pieces as factory seconds back in the 70's and put together a Series 70-ish Colt Government sized 1911 and then purchased a Colt 22 ACE kit for it. I sent it to Bill Wilson and he hard chromed everything to match. Just thought of this one as I was typing.
Wish I could be more help, but I have not been able to put enough rounds through a firearm (or enough draw cycles) to warrant refinishing.
This is a photo of the "other" non factory finish; the one I cobbled together from factory seconds. Playing with Focus Stacking to see if I can get increased depth of field.

Thanks! It is my first "full house" build, and the list is long of work done. There is only one spot that irks me, but I don't think most would ever notice ;-)

Very nice. I asked Santa for a Wilson Combat 1911 for Christmas, and all i got was a used Hi-Point with "LOL" crudely scratched into the slide. Either i didn't make the "nice" list, or the jolly fat man is a dick...

I've been messing with this guy for a little while. Decided to take some pictures before sending it back to Nighthawk for a modification that I've been sitting on for almost six years now.

I don't normally get emotionally attached to firearms but this one has grown on me, since I find it interesting in a historical perspective. Produced in 2004, one of the first pistols made by Nighthawk.

How accurate is that beauty.
I ordered it with several options from Les Baer - blank slide, no FCS, single side safety, bead blasted hard chrome ... and the 1.5" guarantee. It lives up to the accuracy hype. After a couple thousand rounds its still tight as a tick, and it has never had a MALF of any type. The Desert Ironwood grips are from Sarge at TheFinerGrain dot com.
and Thank you Sir for the kind words.

Great photo Jerry. I really appreciate the looks and function of just a standard Colt 1911.
Eventually I'd like to get a 70 series Commander.

I’ve got a Colt 1911 that turned 100 this year. Waiting for the right time to shoot it for it’s Centennial. The only drawback: it was refinished a few decades ago.

Even more reason to get back up here quicker. We need to see what that AR45 is doing now.

Thanks! Was a stainless gun, of many stainless guns. Tired of it, was my beater pistol but one of my favorites. LGS killed it with the battleworn bronze cerakote along with the majority of work. Steve at MARS Armament did the front strap work.
