My new SR-762 has arrived. I picked it up this morning. I haven't had the chance to shoot it yet but I'll try to change that this weekend.

Without further delay, here are some photos:

The rifle more or less as shipped. I swapped out the Ruger flash hider for an AAC 51T so I can mount my 762-SDN-6. I also ditched the Hogue pistol grip and replaced it with a plain old A2 grip.

The Ruger with my suppressor in place.

The bolt carrier group and charging handle. This is another change. I replaced the standard GI-type with a BCM Gunfighter. I'm pleased to see the BCM fits since VLTOR has a pretty long list of rifles the 762 won't fit.

Various bolt parts. Note that the extractor has both a donut o-ring and another small internal spring. Care should be taken since the inner spring falls out.

Gas piston parts. These sure look like the parts I'm used to with my SR-556's but the adjustment/dis-assembly hole is bigger in the gas regulator. Note that the regulator is marked as 7.62.

The buffer tube on the SR-762 is about an inch longer than a standard 5.56 carbine buffer tube.

The SR-762 appears to use a standard weight 5.56 carbine buffer.

I was trying to beat the fading daylight this evening and didn't get all the photos I wanted. I'll try to get some SR-556 and SR-762 comparison photos tomorrow.

I've been giving my intended use some thought and I think I'll set this gun up as more of a heavy patrol rifle as opposed to a DMR type. The idea is to keep weight to a minimum so I will not be adding any sort of bipod, etc.

I will keep the factory Ruger stock and recoil parts and may or may not replace a few small parts like the BUIS to save an ounce or two. Along these lines, I'll leave the Aimpoint in place and add a 3x detachable magnifier for those rare times the rifle gets used beyond 200 yards. If the idea proves to have merit I'll probably replace the Aimpoint PRO with a T-1 to shave off a few more ounces.

As pictured above with no sling, the Aimpoint and a full mag the gun is 10.8 pounds.

Although the gas blocks and forends certainly appear to be the same and they are the same length, they are not identical. The SR-762 is slightly taller than that of the SR-556.

The SR-762's gas block measures 1.832" tall while the SR-556 measures 1.721. Both blocks were measured from the bottom of the block to the area just behind the gas regulator seat.

According to UPS tracking my Aimpoint magnifier will be here today. I've got my fingers crossed.

Once I've got a little magnification on the rifle I'll see what I can do for group. I have some Hornady 168 A-Max and a couple different hunting loads to try as well as some M80 ball.

I shot the new Ruger off the bench this morning. I went out a bit early hoping to beat the winds but to no avail. I took along some Winchester 180gr Power Point and some Hornady 168gr A-MAX stuff but, given the winds, I decided to just stick with Tula FMJ. I didn't see much point in shooting the good stuff with the gusting winds.

First off, the Aimpoint 2moa dot and 3x magnifier might be a good option for shooting agg felons or Jihadists but the combo isn't the best for precision bench work. Still, the pair has some merit and I didn't really feel limited by the optics.

The rifle seems to have potential and the Tula really shot fairly well. Hopefully I'll have a calm day here in the next week or so and I'll try again.

Here's what I've got so far. These are my 100yd targets. The target pasters are 1" in diameter.

An even better test point than the groups you got with the Tula is the fact that the rifle runs Tula with no issues. . .lol [BD]

The gun cycles & locks open properly on Setting #2 with Tula. I suppose I should try the other settings to see what that does. I have run a few rounds on the small setting with my suppressor attached but not without.

I think I'll pull my inexpensive Redfield 3-9x42 off a 223 next time out and see what some 9x magnification does to group size.

I have just completed the IALEFI master instructor development course in Las Vegas, NV. The course was hosted by the Las Vegas Metro Police Department and was held at the John T. Moran Range. The course was taught by Ken Hardesty, Mike Boyle and John Marrs.

Most of the course focused on handgun skills and since this was more of an instructor course than a shooting course, round count wasn't terribly high. In two days we ran through about 600 rounds of handgun ammo. We shot our rifles yesterday and I put just south of 250 rounds through the Ruger SR-762. Ammo used was a mix of Wolf polymer, Winchester White Box and XM80. I had planned on running the gun with some S&B corrosive surplus but I think I'll save that for another day.

The rifle ran just fine and I had no problems with the gas setting even when using the different ammunition. In some cases the mags were loaded with a mix of steel and brass. There were no malfunctions of any type.

The gun is fun to shoot and I enjoyed using it. Even though the gun doesn't kick, per se, it does tend to push me around put I wasn't handicapped by my choice of rifle.

Overall, I am pleased with what Ruger has done. They've got one of the lightest (maybe the lightest) piston 308's on the market. The gun works like an AR only bigger so I was able to use it in the training without conscious effort.

Next I think I'll pick up one of the new Redfield 6-18x44mm Battlezone scopes and an ADM or Larue mount. I have been able to find a few boxes of match ammo and I really need to see what this piece will do with good ammo and magnification.

Here are a few more groups from the SR-762 and Redfield scope combo.

This is a Speer 125gr TNT loaded with LC brass and a fairly warm load of Ramshot X-Terminator. I don't have any photos of the groups but the same bullet might shoot just a bit better with 8208. I'll have to play with that powder a little more. This is from 100 yards. Actually the taped group you can see in this same photo is three rounds of XM80 ball. The little NRA logo was my aiming point.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/tokarev/Ruger%20SR-762/KIMG0390_edit0_zpsqaw9toic-1.JPG (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/tokarev/media/Ruger%20SR-762/KIMG0390_edit0_zpsqaw9toic-1.JPG.html)

Here is a 200 yard group with Federal 168gr Gold Medal Match.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/tokarev/Ruger%20SR-762/KIMG0389_zpscpk4a7pt-1.JPG (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/tokarev/media/Ruger%20SR-762/KIMG0389_zpscpk4a7pt-1.JPG.html)

And another group with GMM after dialing in a bit too much windage. This was the last group of the day.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/tokarev/Ruger%20SR-762/KIMG0391_zpsf3item18-1.JPG (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/tokarev/media/Ruger%20SR-762/KIMG0391_zpsf3item18-1.JPG.html)

I have to say I'm not terribly thrilled with the Redfield scope. It renders okay on 12x or so but on the higher magnification the image really gets rather washed out and free of fine detail. I guess that's to be expected with a $200 scope.

usbp379

I think I am about done with the benchrest stuff. I'll probably soon pull the Redfield and go back to using the red dot and magnifier.

I shot a few more rounds this morning to include some factory Hornday 155gr match and a handload using Berger 168gr VLD's and IMR 8208 powder. The Bergers seem like they want to shoot and I had one group at 200 yards that was just a smidgen over two inches but these rounds didn't always feed so I had to load them into the chamber one at a time. The rounds are hitting just a bit below the chamber's mouth and I had a couple rounds get deformed pretty badly to include one with a bullet pushed clear inside the case. This could be a magazine related problem but I think it is more likely due to the Berger's ogive. I might have to give some of their "tactical" bullets a try if I can find some.

Otherwise, the gun seems to run and feed fine with JHP, FMJ and SP stuff. Ammo that it likes shoots around 1.5 moa. Ball and "off the shelf" stuff running 2 moa or a bit over.

To update it looks like these guns were most likely built and spec'ed around DPMS and/or Gen2 Magpul magazines. There have been numerous reports about failures to feed with the new Gen3 PMAG's. Ruger is aware of the problem and has made modifications to the product so it should now function with metal or plastic mags from any source.

I have not tried my rifle with anything other than Gen2 and Gen3 PMAG's. While the gun does seem to run fine, expect as noted with the Berger hand loads, it doesn't like the Gen3's. I don't know exactly what dimensions have been changed from one generation of magazine to the next but using Gen3 mags in the rifle will result in a bolt over base failure to feed.

29 March 2014, 16:18
With the above noted, I do see that the magazine does seem to sit a little low in the rifle. Even though it does feed, the rounds sit low in relation to the chamber. During the feeding cycle, ammunition tends to strike low at the bottom of the chamber. Ball and polymer tipped bullets don't seem to be affected by this but BTHP bullets will show a slight deformation.

This has been a great thread. My rifle so far has been 100 percent, but is of recent manufacture and shipped with Gen 3's. About 1.5 moa with the "good stuff" and 2.5 moa to "where the hell did that round go?" With cheap stuff. I have settled on the Remington 150 gr corelokt as a factory round, will work with hand loads around something like the Nosler Accubond when I get around to it. Overall I am very pleased with the rifle and will be more so when I replace the trigger and get a scope with more light on it.

I just got done cleaning my gear and checking my equipment. The class is going well and I've got three days ahead so I don't want to get lazy and miss something that some basic maintenance would have prevented.

Today was basics and fundamentals. We spent the morning on the rifle and the afternoon on the handgun. We started out by sighting in at 50 and checked zeros at 100. We also worked on a few positional drills at 100, 75, 50 and 25 yards. With the pistol we shot all the way back to 50 but most of the afternoon was spent around 15 yards. We worked a number of drills to include quite a bit of right- and left-hand only.

Since we were working BRM, total rifle rounds fired was 100. I had no problems with the SR-762 shooting a mix of XM80 and Tula ball. I fired several mags from the prone with the rifle resting on the magazine.

The gun's a bit heavy and the recoil, while not severe, is certainly more than I'm accustomed to. It will be interesting to see how I do when we start shooting against the timer.

I'm back home after Day Two of my TMACS class. Today was somewhat of a flip-flop of yesterday with us running pistols in the morning and rifles all afternoon.

For pistol Mac ran us through a fast drill then a slow precision drill followed by a speed drill and a precision drill. I think this was a good way of helping us find our limits and push ourselves but was also a way to keep us in check and help us remember the basics at the same time.

After lunch we pulled out the rifles and repeated the positional drill we shot yesterday. This was five rounds prone at 100, five rounds sitting at 75, five founds kneeling at 50 and five rounds standing at 25. We shot this for score and then went into something called "Light the Fuse." This was a timed event and shooters were required to shoot 5 rounds from 100, 75, 50 and 25 yards. Shooters then performed an empty gun reload and shot again going from 25 and on back up to 100. Total rounds fired was 40 and time stopped when the shooter returned and finished off the 100 yard line. We shot this once for practice and once as a "championship."

Total rounds through the Ruger today was 180. I did have a short stroke today while shooting prone. I felt the gun short stroke but pulled the trigger anyway. I got a click and racked a round into the chamber and had no further problems. The gun cycled enough to eject but not enough to strip another round. Was it an ammo problem or a mag issue? The short stroke happened when I was in the prone and I was putting a pretty good amount of pressure on the mag. Regardless of the cause, I didn't dwell on it too much and shooting prone while resting on the mag didn't cause any other issues.

I'm getting ready for the final day of class. I should actually be pushing a patch down the barrel and running a chamber brush in just to be safe but the Ruger's running fine and probably doesn't need anything other than more ammo.

I got home a little late last night with our day spent working the afternoon and into darkness. We started our class with some reload and transition drills. We fired three rounds, reloaded and fired three more followed by a transition to pistols. We worked this awhile until Mr McNamara thought we were ready. We then did the same exercise but anyone who pulled a shot or was the last one to fire stepped off the line. We continued on until only one shooter remained.

Next came cars and barricades at fifty yards. We worked different points of concealment and shot from various standing and prone positions. Mags weren't fully loaded to force shooters into performing reloads or pistol transitions so we could reinforce what we'd worked earlier. I did have a stovepipe malfunction somewhere along in here when I partially obstructed the ejection port on my rifle. I had switched over to my support side shoulder and blocked the port a little with my right arm. Let me tell you; 308 brass is HOT coming straight out of the chamber!

We broke for evening chow and then worked our pistols on steel using our night sights and flashlights. We then went back to the 50 yard line and worked some of our evening drills again but in from the cover of darkness.

I'm not certain of my round count now. I had been keeping track previously by how many mags I had empty at the end of the day. Loading mags to five rounds and loading out of a pants pocket threw that method out the window. But I'm guessing I probably went through 250 rounds of 308 yesterday.
