I am still an FNG and when it comes to the sidearm I am really green. Before anyone jumps on me and says get used to it before you change anything....I completely agree and will be running it stock for awhile.

I want to do some of the local 2 gun competition here locally. So I have been looking at different setups and what not. So here are my questions for my S&W M&P 9.

1. Does the trigger really need to be messed with? What are the bonuses of moving to an APEX 3.5lbs trigger other than me getting a new pistol for EDC?

2. Sights? I think if anything I will run either a Novak or 10-8 performance front fiber sight and either leave the rear sights alone or setup with a blacked out rear. Again a blacked out rear means a different pistol for EDC.

3. Taran Tactical base plates to bring the magazines to 23 rounds? Worth it? Or should I just invest in more mags and gear to carry them?

4. Last one is DPM Systems recoil reduction..has anyone used one does it work and is it worth the $90? Or should I just get a ported barrel? Ported barrel eliminates me from going to certain events in told.

Thanks for any advice on any of these questions.

I think you'll probably answer a lot of your questions after you have a few matches under your belt, and it really is about finding what works best for you.

Since you're asking though, I will provide you with my two cents…but remember, it might be worth about two cents. ;-)

I've yet to find an out-of-the box M&P 9 that has what I'd consider a half decent trigger. I'm not saying you need the Apex 3.5lbs trigger you mention, but I'd definitely suggest doing something to it. Depending on your level of comfort with trying this, you may be able to get the trigger to a decent point all on your own. I did a trigger job on my first M&P 9 and I'm still pretty happy with it.

This is the power point I followed to do mine: http://www.burwellguns.com/M&Ptriggerjob1.htm

Next, I'd highly recommend going with a set of 10-8 Performance sights. Using a fiber optic front doesn't totally count your pistol out as EDC. While the fiber optic won't provide any benefit at night, it won't hurt you much either…it will simply be like a standard set of iron sights. I think you'll find the fiber optic front really helps in matches though. I find picking up the fiber optic front is super easy under anything but really low-light situations.

Moving on to question 3: reloading on a stage for a new shooter can take up to a second and a half; maybe more. That's a ton of extra time on a stage that might only take 12 to 15 seconds to finish in the first place. If you really get into shooting matches, you'll probably find out really fast that you want every round you can jam into a magazine. Buy the Taran Tactical base plates.

Finally on question 4: IMHO you don't need either of these….just don't even bother.

Thank you for the advice. I looked at the 10-8's and now I gotta see if I can look at setups with different height and widths to see what looks right to my eyes.

When I was talking about the sights and EDC I was told it was a bad idea to run a blacked out rear on something you might need to defend yourself with. And also told that a light trigger wasn't a good idea either. I think that is good advice for people that have never had training or so rusty like me that you might as well cut that knowledge off with a torch and start over.

Going to the range this weekend we have a new action pistol pit and action carbine/pistol scenario range that I can see how rusty I am.

Taran has a sale going on for the base plates hopefully I can pick some up before the end of the sale.

And number 4...forgotten already. Thanks again.

EDC pistol set up is a whole long discussion to have, and I could write a ton addressing that topic. For purposes of this thread though, you're much better off keeping you competition pistol you competition pistol and getting another set up for EDC.

Kinda what I figured. And maybe sometime before February you can post that ton of knowledge on EDC cause I would like to read it before I jump on that.
