View Full Version : Epic Stickman 50K Giveaway Rifle Build

I was super lucky to receive the top prize in the recent Stickman 50K giveaway: an Aero Precision COP upper receiver (http://aeroprecisionusa.com/upper-receviers/cop-m4-ar15-continuous-optics-platform-mid-length-upper-receiver-kit.html), laser engraved with Stickman's logo. I've decided to do an epic build based on this upper, using top-shelf components with no holds barred.

I thought it would be super cool to have a matching lower, so I contacted Aero Precision to find out if they would engrave Stickman's logo on one of their STS (Short Throw Selector) lower receivers (http://aeroprecisionusa.com/lower-receivers/ar15-stripped-lower-receiver-sts.html). They were happy to work with me and once Stick gave his consent, it only took a few days to get it out to me.

I'd like to thank Stickman (http://stickgunner.com/) for putting on the Giveaway, the entire WEVO team for hosting a great forum, Aero Precision for providing their excellent product to the giveaway, and Defense Marketing Group (http://defensemk.com/) for making all of this possible.

As an homage to Stickman, I'm going to use this opportunity to hone my photography as well. Hopefully things will look better by the end of the thread than they did at the beginning [:)]

Yes Dave, that's just fantastic. Only thing I've ever won was a couple of bucks on a scratch off lottery ticket[:D]

Don't make us wait until your done to see what you've got planned for it, post up some periodic pics, as a matter of fact, all the lucky jokers that won something, it wouldn't be a bad idea if you posted your new cool prize/toy on your favorite weapon.

Thanks guys. I'm really excited about this one.

It will be expensive, no doubt. I'll just have to save to buy the best parts, so it could take a while [:)]

I have a rough idea of the direction I'm going but I haven't fully decided yet. I have several carbines already so I may do something different, maybe SPR-style with 18" barrel. Or not. I can't make up my mind lol. First-world problems!

You can bet I'm going to shoot the shit out of it too. I won't purposely throw it in the dirt but this won't be a safe queen.

I received the upper yesterday. It's a work of art. I'll try to take some photos over the weekend.

MD,
A while back I wrote a short, but to the point rant "why do we need another lower", basically meandering about how anyone with a CNC machine, is now a "weapons" builder, that they were popping up all over the place like weeds, and the whole "look, another lower from "XYZ", how cool thread", was really getting old.

However, if you're of a miscevious nature (such as I am ;)) you should start telling people that ALL of Stickman's guns are marked like that, and none of his photos are actually watermarked. I too get a little annoyed when I see yet another so-and-so whatever for the AR market. However choice is never really a bad thing. The market will decide if the latest gizmo sticks or not.

Not to spend other people's money, but do you have long-term thoughts of tax-stamping that lower?

If you're ever gonna pony up the extra $200, this would be a good combination to file. AP middy COP uppers over 10.5" barrels are sexy.

Also I think waiting for over a year is ridiculous, especially considering I already have several tax stamps, a govt clearance, a CCW, etc. etc. I have been vetted at the highest levels throughout my life and STILL it takes the stupid mofos over a YEAR to grant my tax stamp. The process has become so retarded that I just can't stomach it anymore.

Hey guys, I'm ready to buy a trigger for this build.

Old hands please chime in.

My requirements:
- single stage
- 3 or 4 lb pull
- safe, reliable, something you would take into combat
- separate pieces, no "trigger packs"
- uses standard springs
- price is no object, but only if higher price actually means higher quality
- compatible with 45 degree BAD-ASS-ST selector

There are so many triggers out there I am bewildered. For example even just within the Geisele catalog, there are a huge number of different options.

Please help me find the best trigger, bar none, for this unique rifle. Thanks in advance!

I'm in love with my SSA-E. I've got it on a GP 14.5. I wondered at first if it wasn't too light for that type of set-up, but it didn't take long for me to come to prefer it over a SSA.

Magpul MIAD Enhanced Trigger Guard (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/114195/magpul-trigger-guard-miad-enhanced-ar-15-aluminum-matte) or Spike's Billet Trigger Guard (http://www.spikestactical.com/new/sss/lower-parts-spikes-billet-trigger-guard-p-389.html)?

Even if you're careful, it's easy to break a receiver tab when installing the trigger guard roll pin. The Little Crow Gunworks AR-15 Trigger Guard Roll Pin Pusher (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/318884/little-crow-gunworks-ar-15-trigger-guard-roll-pin-pusher) makes this task easy and worry-free.

I've glanced at it but haven't researched it in-depth. You recently installed one didn't you? Have you shot it much yet? I'd like to stick to standard springs, and I haven't read anything about the long-term reliability of the HiperFire.

Dave,

I'm not one of the salty dogs with hundreds of thousands of rounds downrange, but I suspect your list is impossible to satisfy. I suggest defining "the best" might require a more narrow list of criteria and a more complete definition of how you expect to use the carbine.

In most cases, getting a single stage trigger to 3-4 lbs requires reduced power springs, which reduces your combat-ready reliability by introducing the possibility of light primer strikes. Many might suggest that a 3 lb trigger is, by that very trait, not adequately safe or suitable in hard use or combat situations. So it seems to me that hitting all your points seems a pretty difficult feat.

If you gravitate more towards a real single stage, reliable trigger, I really, really like my ALG ACT trigger. It breaks at a higher pull weight than your 4 lb cutoff because it uses full power springs and a long-established trigger design, but is silky-smooth with a short, firm reset. I can't tell you what durability on the hardlubing might be, there's no way I have enough cycles on it to consider evaluating that. But so far, everyone who tried it has been impressed.

If you're wiling to sacrifice the real single stage design, but maintain a "single stage feel" and wiggle a little on that "combat-ready" criteria, one of the Geissele 3Gun triggers MAY satisfy your needs. At least on paper, it looks right up your alley. Both are short-throw, 3 lb triggers. I have not used either of these SSGs yet, so bear in mind that this this suggestion is based only on my overall positive experience with Geissele products and the literature from the "product flyer" link on their web site.

As to your point on the SSA and SSA-E, yes, both have a very distinct 2-stage feel. I like my SSA, except for the slightly long reset.

Regards.
D.

That is some good food for thought. I had not considered that lowering pull to 3 lbs or so may require lighter springs. Thanks for the reply and I will look into your suggestions.

I've probably put together 60-70 lowers and have never had any issue with ears breaking off, just have to make sure it's supported. One thing that does make roll pin installation much easier is I always use a couple of drops of oil on the pin and hole.

That roll pin pusher looks like a life saver. I've never broken a receiver, but I get as anxious installing them, as I would if it were open heart surgery. My friend has the exact same spikes trigger guard, and while he was helping me install the buffer tube (I'm still recovering from neck surgery), he noticed the Seekins on mine. The Aero Precision COP upper kit is pretty neat. You can configure it any way you like with the provided rails. The bottom half is removed to install the barrel and rails, so you don't have to re-zero an optic if you decide to change it up.

I wanted the gas block to fit inside the rail. The COP upper is not really meant to be used this way; there is very little room. I had to file the gas block roll pin so that it was flush with the gas block in order to prevent it from touching the inside of the receiver. The PRI stainless gas block fits with only a couple mm to spare. I was contemplating using a shaved Wilson adjustable gas block but it was just too tight.

I wanted a stainless barrel, just because I thought it would look cool. There are not a lot of companies offering stainless barrels with carbine length gas systems. After a ton of research, I found Lilja (http://www.riflebarrels.com/) and their stainless M4 barrel (http://www.riflebarrels.com/products/ar.htm). This is the barrel they famously made for the Naval Surface Warfare Center which eventually came to be known as the "Recce". I had mine fluted to lighten it up a bit, to mitigate the weight of the AP COP. The barrel is super expensive, but it's gorgeous. The bore is hand-lapped and has a mirror finish. The fluting is nice, and I like the classy markings on the end. This 17" barrel features a 1 in 8 twist and a 223 Wylde chamber.

Hey all, I've been waiting on some cosmetic things to finish off this build, but it's been shootable for a couple months.

After about 200 rounds, while breaking in the Lilja Precision barrel I had a bolt failure.

The rifle ceased to chamber and upon inspection I found a lug had sheared from the bolt. The lug had lodged in the barrel extension, stopping the action.

Glad it worked out this way as it may have continued to fire for some time. Who knows maybe even the lug could have got down the barrel and fired out with a bullet :(

Anyway Rainier is being super cool and and I'm expecting a new BCG this week.

This is a Rainier NIB BCG that I bought in early January 2014. They said they had a bad batch and immediately offered to send me a new one. They gave me a pre-paid label for returning the failed BCG and have already shipped out a new one.

I have never experienced this before. After searching it appears relatively common and my bolt looks typical for a heat treatment problem. It's amazing how much heat treatment really does for metal.

I hope that everyone understands that failures of this sort can and do happen periodically, life is not perfect, and shit happens.

Rainier customer support so far has been exemplary as I expected.

This is why I always test my gear [:)]

Spike's T2 buffer and Sprinco Blue (Larue heavy duty) action spring. Ammo was Federal XM193. The latter half was mostly suppressed, that's why everything is so black.

Lesson learned - every time I break in a new rifle I will inspect the bolt every 50 rounds.

FYI,

Dave is right, Rainier had a bad batch of Bolts earlier this year. If your bolt is engraved MPI vs laser etched MPI, HPT/MPI then you need to return the bolt to RA for a replacement.

Dave, killer. Looks awesome and congrats! Its nice when one gets to finish..

So have you any thoughts of something to hang on that 6 o'clock rail section? I'm torn on what to do on mine.. I kind of want to do some type of vertical grip. But there isn't a ton of room there. And I don't want to use the full rail section... Anyway. UW would definitely call this a first world problem, and it is. Just curious if you have any plans.

MoxyDave
23 September 2014, 21:03
It's a convenient spot for a bipod [:)] I'm not a fan of vertical grips, but I do like the stubby Magpul on my SCAR. It keeps my thumb away from the reciprocating charging handle. Not sure why you'd use one on an AR but everyone has their preferences ...

Me too man. It really works, calming everything down while suppressed. The only drawback is the switchblock gets dirty fast. If you don't move it repeatedly it will really start to gum up. And if you lose the provided wrench ... you're shit outta luck.

Dave,

I linked your photos on this thread to Mrs. Stick, who decided that your gun is epic. I know it's in SPR configuration now, but for general use, Mrs. Stick decided you needed one of these to complete the gun for close in work.
