I'd like to dimple a Noveske 10.5.

I think part of the decision might be based upon running suppressed or not. A 10.5" is about the minimum most suppressor manufacturers recommend due to wear on the internals. That's the way I went, running LWRC 10.5" in 6.8 and 5.56 with AAC cans. My son went with a Noveske 7.5" with a BattleComp in 6.8 because he is not using any suppression device. I really like his choice, for his requirements - a very "handy" combination.

Base your decision upon what your requirements are, and the intended use. Remember, you are giving up some amount of "effective" range with every inch you cut off.

Don't get me wrong SBR's with the muzzle device tucked into the end of a nice rail is something amazing to look at. If MI votes to allow SBR or if I move to a state that allows SBR to be honest I think I will move to a 14.5" barrel. I think at 14.5" in LW profile covers pretty much anything I need to do with an AR. It's not so long that I can't do CQB style shooting and it's not so short that I have to worry about stretching it out to 300-400 yards without having to worry about setting up a larger optic than a 1-4x24. Anything shorter I would just make an AR pistol out of it. Those are my preferences but I still like looking at the SBR's everyone else has.

When I finally get my Colt M16A2 I'll replace the upper with a 11.5 R0923CQB upper. I have a suppressor for it.
My H&K G3K has a 12.4 inch barrel.
I'm in the process of SBRing a bolt gun to 12.5 for use with a can.
MP5K sear gun is a SBR, it's barrel is 8.3 inches

building an 8.5" 300blackout SBR as I type. Will be suppressed mostly once the can is *finally* released from ATF jail.

I have had 7,11.5, 12.5 and now have a 10.5 Rainier Ultramatch barrel with an Adams Arms lightweight kit. It has been my favorite so far, with suppressor I am right at 16.5.

Suppressed would be a 10.5" N4. Un-suppressed would be a 12.5" N4.

I guess it depends on how much rail space you need to grip.

why the different lengths between suppressed and non suppressed. I have one in the works, but I have been tossing those 2 lengths back and forth in my head.

First, I don't really go in for the idea that a gun should be used with and without a suppressor. It's either suppressed or it isn't, with a possible exception for the Noveske Switchblock or similar. But then, I think the cans I have were the biggest wastes of money ever in my gun-buying history.

That said, I'd rather have a 12.5", but if I'm going to out a can on it, and leave a can on it, I'd like to start out shorter.

I have had 10.3, 11.5, 12.5, 14.5, 16 and 18 inch AR's. Anything in the 12-13 inch bbl range is ideal for me.

Well,

Looks like SBR's are now finally legal in the State of Washington in about 90 days or so. Looks like I'll have to decide what barrel length upper I want to use for my own use soon. I'm thinking at least a 12.5 and 11.5 to start.

I efiled one, and got 2 factory SBR lowers from Rainier, but those were mailed.

Let's see what gets here sooner.

In rob_s's honor, I will also be SBR'ing a Colt 6933 later this month. Those projects should tie me over for the rest of the year.

Somewhere in my head I've convinced myself that the 12.5" ELW-F BFG is the Holy Grail...

So here's my top three choices for an upper once I get my funds / paperwork for my trust in order. Looking for opinions from those with experience in all / some of them
Planning on a SureFire can: FA556-212. Is it better to have a FH or MB for an SBR? If I remember correctly from past research, the MB protects the suppressor better than the FH, but the FH is better when not running suppressed? I can't say this rifle would be 100% suppressed use.

1. DD MK18 with the RIS II handguard.
2. BCM 11.5" w/ KMR rail
3. Noveske 10.5" switchblock

My uses would be for HD and training / SHTF.

I suppose I should look into the 12.5" barrel category as well?

rob_s
3 October 2014, 06:54
I would base the muzzle device choice on the % of use you think you'll get out of the can. For me, I don't get much use out of a can, but because I have one it sits on my SHTFantasy gun. Were I starting from scratch, I'd get a 10.5" Noveske Switchblock upper and a 7.62 can that is <7.5" OAL and attach it via a flash hider mount. I would shoot the gun with the can on it about 10% of the time (by number of rounds fired) which would mean that there would be almost no benefit to having the brake mount, and the brake would only make shooting it unsuppressed (that other 90% of the time) intolerable. I have an Ops can now and the brake mount on the gun is painful without the can, even to the shooter.

Yeah I bought an ELW 14.5" middie w/ the MB556K from BCM and it spits fireballs and punches those next to me in the face. Probably should have thought about that one a little longer than I did... But that will undoubtedly be the full-time recipient of this can once I make my purchase.

Is there any performance gain to go above a 10.5 without going to a 16?

GOST
3 October 2014, 13:55
A 11.5" has a 40% longer dwell time than a 10.5" as quoted from Paul B. A 12.5" Noveske Crusader is only about 70 fps slower than a 14.5", which still keeps you above terminal velocity for fragmentation.

I have a colt 6940 I trimmed down to 10.3" and absolutely love it. Can't wait to get a LWRC and PWS in the same. I also want to get a HK MR556 and cut it down to 10.3/10.5"

I have a 10.3" DD barrel for my 300 BLK, but it's a pistol, not an SBR. Eventually I want to SBR a lower and make an M4gery out of it: 14.5" M4 profile barrel, quad rail, FSB, etc. I went with a pistol build for now, because I can take it across state lines without having to deal with ATF. My brother has a DD Mk18 in FDE, and it's pretty sweet, but since I have the 300 BLK pistol, I don't see the need for a .223/5.56 short barrel. Too much velocity lost for my personal taste. If I need a short gun, I'll go with the 300, which I much prefer for <200yds. But that's just me

Which barrel are you using?

holy crap! I just remembered I posted in here. Sorry!! I used a local gun shop barrel - melonited 8" with a 1:7 twist. I have no idea who made it, but it was an interim barrel unti lI found one of quality. It could be a quality one for all I know, but I cannot find out who actually made it. So I'm replacing it with the Aero 8" barrel that is 1:7 also but the .109 gas port since I have a SLR adjustable block. At least I'll know it's concentric grooving for the suppressor and there is a place for me to get help with any issues. That alone is worth replacing my current barrel. And I'll have a spare for another build :P

And my can is out of jail - my new favorite gun to take!! I'm amazed at how stupid quiet it is with my loaded subs...

I found the same thing, only mine was an eFile that took 35 days. NFAtracker shows Form1's are a considerably less time wait than the others.
