Okay, I've got some time so I'm going to do this thread correctly.

My buddy got a bad wrap. His wife left him and took his twin boys have way across Texas and took him for THOUSANDS in debt. In order to make in meets, we're both in the oil field, he took a job in S. Korea. He's away from home for 6 weeks and then comes home for 4. He gets to see his boys, which are his WORLD for 2 days of those 4 weeks. He had to sell all his guns, give up his dear lease..etc. So, I decided to build my best friend, who would give the shirt off his back to a stranger if it meant they were warm, an AR. So I started ordering parts. Many will be here tomorrow.

What I've ordered so far...
Black Rain Billet Lower.
Geissele SMR Mk II rail - 15"
Rainier Arms Ultra Match 16" .223 Wylde barrel w/ match gas block.
Geissele SSA-E trigger.
CMT billet upper

I don't really like mixing uppers and lowers so I'll likely order a BRO upper and keep the CMT upper for me.

I'll likely use a Young MFG N/M BCG if I can find one. He really likes the Magpul PRS I have on another rifle so he'll get one of those. I've also got a Nikon M223 4-16X42SF in a LaRue mount in the mail somewhere.

It should be a pretty sweet rifle when it's said and done and a hell of a surprise.

Same friend you mentioned on the other thread? I'm sure you'll use some high quality components!

Yeah. I'm waiting on a bunch more parts to arrive Wednesday.

BRO lower. The anodizing sucks. So I'll have it Cerakoted for him. He likes camo so the upper, lower and rail might get a camo treatment. Not sure yet.

I'll likely throw in a BADASS ambi, Nogon ambi magazine release, PRI gas buster charging handle, KNS pin set. He really likes my MEGA build so it's going to closely follow it.

Damn... I wish we were friends! Nice build!

LOL.

He'll use this thing for hunting so I want to build the most accurate AR I could build. I'll break the barrel in before I give it to him and try to keep him from mag dumping the thing repeatedly.

Give him 10 round mags with 5 round limiters that should keep the mag dumps to a minimum haha

Personally,

Since I've always been a tad OCD... I would not use the Black Rain Lower and buy a matching CMT lower. You could always get an "ammo" grade one from CMT if you wanted to spend a little less. Obviously, appearance has no affect on function, but with the amount of money you've spent on quality components, it just seems like that's the way to go.

I'm the same way. I've already ordered a CMT billet lower. Just waiting on the dealer to get it in. I'll probably sell the BRO lower. The CMT lower doesn't have the angled cuts around the receiver extension. They just increased the diameter of that round. It doesn't look all that GREAT, but looks better than the BRO. Beside, just having mismatched receivers bothers me. Got to have the same name in them.

I also had a 15" Mk4 delivered and didn't like the way it looked with the over all set up so I ordered a Mk II. I found that the Mk II has a bigger over all diameter which is good because my friend has large hands and the bigger tube will give him more purchase. I'll also probably throw some Knights URX panels on it to give it some texture.

So, I'm just as OCD as you I just couldn't find a CMT lower locally and got an okay deal on the BRO. Over all I'm not impressed with the BRO. The CMT displays a MUCH higher quality and attention to detail.

Mock up of the upper. Forward assist and dust cover need to get here so I can install them and then I'll lock down the barrel nut, gas block bolts and the rail.

Aaron,

This is definitely a first rate build. I'm sure once you get the CMT set in you'll be very happy. I've got 2 sets built up, and they are very good values for the money. Your friend is a lucky guy!

It's certainly a build I wouldn't mind keeping for my self, LOL. He was here at the house over the weekend and I wasn't paying attention and had the upper and some other parts on my gun bench and he was checking it out. I told him I was building a 16" gun that I could use for varmint hunting and he started gabbing about how he missed all his guns and hunting. So, I think it's really going to knock him out of his socks when he gets this from me.

I will say that the quality of the CMT upper is vastly superior to the Black Rain and maybe even the MEGA. If the CMT lower is of the same outstanding quality that the upper is I will get a CMT set for the SBR I plan to build next.

Aaron I wish that I was your friend.

LOL. This isn't something I've done before nor will probably ever do again - The wife was all gung-ho about the project until she started seeing the depleted funds in the bank. Oh well. It's all ordered now.

Lookin' good man. I had a UBR on one of mine a couple years ago ... it's a nice stock but it sure is heavy.

AaronP220
15 February 2014, 22:55
Yeah, it's a anchor back there for sure but the barrel is nice and heavy as well so it balances out well.

Went and broke in the barrel last night.

It really loves 69gr HPBT Winchester Match ammo.
